iPhone: Scrolling menu hack

- Hacks, iPhone, Share/Freeware -

A developer with the handle “lg” has made a software that gets the iPhone’s menu screen to scroll.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog reports that lg has created an app he calls Summerboard, a play on the name of the home screen application Apple calls Springboard, which tweaks the built-in main menu app to scroll, among other things (it can also add wallpaper to the menu screen). It’s still a first attempt, so it’s largely buggy and hard to install, but lg promises more features and more improvements in the near future.

NeoOffice update

- FOSS, Updates & Patches, Share/Freeware -

Just a heads-up.

A new version of NeoOffice, the FOSS office suite based on OpenOffice has just been released that incorporates most of the improvements already in OpenOffice.org 2.2.1.

NeoOffice is distinctive in that it is more compliant with the Mac look-and-feel, and doesn’t require X11 to run. NeoOffice 2.2.1 also allows users to print documents in resolutions higher than the previously capped 300dpi, manipulate most Microsoft Office 2007 documents, supports Address Book and takes advantage of the built-in spell checker in Mac OS X.

Retro blogging

- Oddities, Wala lang, Reminiscing, Share/Freeware -

In our endless wandering on the Internets, the Doodler stumbled across something Wordpress bloggers might find a bit interesting: a retro MacOS theme (which incidentally enough, is also its formal name) that uses 1-bit System 1.0 graphics. You can’t get more retro than this clunky monochromatic look. Who’da thought that in the future, pixellation would be cool?

Try the Retro MacOS Theme if you’ve a mind to, although for this Doodler, it’s a bit too hardcore. System 7, maybe. Even if I cut my teeth on Macs staring at screens like this for hours on end back in the day, it’s something I wouldn’t exactly want to revisit. Too retro for me, man.

Heads-up: Bonjour for Windows update released

- New Stuff, Microsoft, Share/Freeware -

Something extremely useful for OS X users that they’ve taken for granted for a long while now has finally been updated for Microsoft Windows folk.

Bonjour 1.0.4., formerly Rendezvous, is now available for Windows 2000/2003, XP (with latest service pack) and Vista.

This was first released with Jaguar in 2002, with a not-so-full-featured Windows version released in 2004. What is it, exactly?

Bonjour, also known as zero-configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.

More details and download link (2.1MB) for Bonjour 1.0.4 here. Users of 64-bit versions of Windows can get theirs here.
