Post-Valentine checkup: did your heart choke your wallet?

Last Friday, we were teasing one of our reporters who used to receive bouquets of flowers at our Makati office from her boyfriend. She also used to buy gifts and have them delivered to his office, come Valentines’ Day. They have since gotten married and had children. Amid the ribbing, she said: “If he’s going to get it from the family budget, never mind!” We all guffawed at that good-naturedly. Blame the economy, I guess. On the way home, I told my husband that I was amused to see couples doing HHWWPSSP (what, you don’t know what that means? It’s short for “holding hands while walking pa-sway sway pa!”) Some of them were carrying roses, obviously on their way to some romantic date place. I saw my husband from the corner of my eye smiling and teasing me because we used to be like them. I then punched him gently on the shoulder and greeted him “Happy Valentines Day”, a gesture that earned me a hearty laugh. That was our Valentine’s Day celebration, plus several episodes of “Lost” that we watched when we got home. How far we have fallen from the nice-fancy-dinner, night-out-of-town, chocolates-and-roses-and-stuffed-toys couple. How steep the slide from weeks of planning on how to surprise and delight one another. But come to think of it, the simple snacks and shared moments of TV pleasure were just as, if not, more satisfying. At this time in our married life, we have more pressing matters on our minds: a growing family, amortization to pay, children to send to school, and long-term health care for parents to think about. Are we becoming our own personal Scrooges? I pause a moment to face the situation. Nah, not really. Honestly, financial security is an even better Valentine’s Day gift, and we both felt that deep in our bones. How about you? How did you spend Valentine’s Day?

We had dinner at a Filipino resto here. They offered set meals with live mellow music. The cost of our dinner is only half of how much one person will spend in Hotel Buffet Dinner so it's quite cheap.

Now, here's the interesting part, my husband bought me a gift after dinner. I've been lusting for that wrist watch but I don't have plans of buying because any wrist watch will just provide the same time. I'd rather save the money but I gave in because I know that my husband will just spend the money anyway. At least I have a new watch! So my husband broke his wallet while mine is intact because I did not buy him anything. I'm still hoping that time will come, my husband will Money Smart.

I dont have much good memories about Valentine's day. Mostly because when I was a kid - i spend money on girls from my sister school (_ _ a) who dont like me and no matter if you spend a thousand bucks - nothing happens.

If your going to spend the money make sure your able to discern the things of value from something that is just going to give you a boot on where dont shine.

At least for Nina she got a watch... for my troubles... I got my heart broken.

hubby had a colonoscopy on valentine's day. yun ang naging valentine's day celebration namin because we had to check if his colon is clean, given that his mother died of cancer. mahal since we had to pay 16K for it but i think it was a wise decision since we are investing on his health.

nina, you always know the best deals in town :-). ok na ikaw ang moneysmart, so your husband can spoil you silly hehehe.

jokho, what a sad story! :-( best to look for girls who are incurable romantics. THEY are not expensive to woo!

leela, fixing health problems will always be a good investment. hope the tests proved that he was healthy?

salve, the colonoscopy result was great. nothing to worry about. best 16K we've spent. =D

valentine? what's that (with bitterness)? hihihi. anyhow, here are my activities last V-day:
am: badminton with friends
pm: visit my newborn nephew with my mom
eve: videoke sa bahay with my niece and nephew

btw, i've received a one long-stem rose from my brother and shared the chocolate given by him to my sister-in-law.. my valentine's day is still complete without a centavo wasted! :-)

i was just glad i made my wife day that time....seeing her light up.... priceless

jokho

We all enjoy Valentines day when still young but as kids comes into our lives and expenses grow we forget to celebrate this special day when actually celebration should become a bigger affair after marriage with more number of people. However we all have our own ways of saying we care, it's not a must that the celebration should be only on Valentines day, we can celebrate this event anytime we want in our lives. What is more important to me is getting the message across to our love ones.
