Is Dante Mendoza the ‘winning-est’ Pinoy film director?

Posted under Awards, Being Filipino, Uncategorized

At the rate we’ve been getting text messages that Brillante “Dante” Mendoza won this or that award in an international film festival, he’s probably the Filipino director with the most number of wins in these events held all over the world. Is anybody making a tally?

We have become almost blasé to hear that Dante has won in yet another film fest. The prolific filmmaker’s latest triumph is at the 6th Vladivostok International Film Festival of Asian Pacific Countries where he won the Best Director award while his lead, Gina Pareño, earned the Best Actress honors for “Serbis.” Dante’s victories are raising awareness in the international film community of the Philippines’ vibrant indie movie scene.

I have watched Mr. Mendoza’s entry film “Tirador” to the Fukuoka International Film Festival (September 12~21) but it was not well received here. I hope that he will come back next year and redeem himself from the Japanese viewers.
I have watched trailers of his movies such as “Foster Child”, Serbis/ice on You Tube, I thought they are excellent films.
We would to see him next year in Japan with his winning film.

i watched his movie Serbis here in the recent Bangkok Intl FilmFest and like it! Though its very controversial becoz of the ex-rated scenes, and I was shocked as well but the story, castings and actings are great! It covers a lot of social/moral issues and problems that Filipinos should focus on finding its solutions.

Sayang, hndi ko lang napanood ung Tirador. Hirap tumakas sa office hehhe..

Congrats Mr. Brilliante Mendoza!

Indeed a very promising Filipino filmmaker this Dante Mendoza is. His style of filmmaking is a fusion of both European and Hollywood cinematic forms. Another award-winning Filipino filmmaker, Lav Diaz, is another gem of Philippine Cinema whose style is definitely European, specifically, influenced by the cinema of eastern european masters like Andrei Tarkovsky. A touch of european style but with a very Filipino sensibility are the marks of both Mendoza and Diaz. On the other hand, Chito Rono and Olive Lamasan are two mainstream Filipino filmmakers who have shown great promise as far as traditional, commercial filmmaking is concerned.

Cheers to Filipino Cinema!!!
