Michael Jackson’s legendary producer cites Cebu inmates’ ‘Thriller’ video

07/01/09

Posted under Celebrities, Music

“In every language on the planet, from prison yards in the Philippines to Thrilltheworld.com, that will be the beautiful, grand legacy of Michael Jackson.”

That was how Quincy Jones, the legendary record producer and artist who produced Michael’s monster hit albums, ended his beautiful tribute to the late entertainer that came out Tuesday, June 30, in the Los Angeles Times. In using the word “that,” Quincy was referring to Michael’s music. Quincy wrote, “It’s no accident that almost three decades later, no matter where I go in the world, in every club and karaoke bar, like clockwork, you hear ‘Billie Jean,’ ‘Beat It,’ ‘Wanna Be Starting Something,’ ‘Rock With You’ and ‘Thriller.’ ”

So take a bow, all 1,400 inmates of the Cebu provincial jail whose version of Michael’s “Thriller” video is an Internet sensation. Obviously, the man who guided Michael in recording “Thriller” and who wrote a personal, heartfelt ode to him in the LA Times piece, has seen the jailbirds’ video too. The inmates recently recreated the dance as a tribute to Quincy’s talent and dear friend.

Quincy also meant that the Philippines is an obscure place in the planet and used it to push the “from end-to-end” context of his ode.

Tita oo ang galing talaga nila.

Dapat palayain na lahat sila.

no raymond, it’s not the country it’s the place which is in prison yard…don’t be too naive in your own interpretation, it’s just that we made a good impression by uniting all the prisoners to do a recreational dance steps which gave them some sort of “hope & inspiration” in bringing entertainment despite being in an “obscure place” that is the prison cell–and not the Philippines.

Anyway, long live the legacy of the king of Pop!

Mr. Jones comments is indeed an inspiration for these people who give their full talents and further just to prove that reforming theselves by way of emulating a musical genius that is MJ (RIP) is possible in one way or the other.

Why so negative Raymond? Just appreciate the positive things in life. Cheers!

It’s funny how people can have a twisted and cynical view of what many thought was a lovely gesture of appreciation from Quincy Jones for what the Cebu inmates have done with ‘Thriller’. If I happen to be working with or living next to Raymond, I will make sure I do not speak or hang out with him for I would rather maintain looking at the bright side of life than drown in the toxic quagmire of his cynical point of view. Avoid toxic people like him. It will not do you any good.

Sharp thought, Raymond. And painfully true.

The Philippines is only an obscure place for those who only got as far as the 4th grade. Does everyone know where Saudi Arabia is?

And, so what Raymond? Spit it out, what do you exactly mean? That the Philippines is just a tiny speck in the radar of the global entertainment scene? Flash News: We are and you don’t have to rub it in.

Mark

I guess, mentioning the prison yard in the Philippines just shows how Michael Jackson has left an indelible mark in almost every people’s heart across the globe. It’s also a story about Michael Jackson so much as it is a story about the Filipinos’ love for the pop culture icon. I believe we should just take pride in the fact that we are so artistic we are equal to any people around the world even if that involves imitating others. But who cares?

Can’t believe how pathetic the previous comment.

The news piece was taken out of context. Obscure place? Yes becaus the Thriller performance happens in a prison facility.

Stop being so shallow and onion-skinned.

If above comment wants to raise the level of patriotism amongst Filipino, the best way is to raise the consciousness of the people with regards to propriety. Propriety in governance and in our work here and abroad.

We should not took pride that our professionals are willing to accept non-skilled jobs for overseas work. There is only practicality in that, no pride at all.

@Raymond. Good point!

Raymond, what’s your point? Your English is awful.

SariManok

True, in a sense.

But irony also meant any place where Jackson’s music is not likely to flourish but does.

teridon

well, no. it’s just you saying that, and all your unfounded criticisms about the country.

Why is it that we think of our selves as the lowest people on the planet?, that when they just mention anything about us or international performer with just Filipino blood, etc.. We get crazy like hell.. In TV, Newspaper, Internet.. its like we won the lottery jackpot?, its like were the best in the planet.. we say that we should be proud of our selves, but actually we lowered our selves to the lowest point.. If a Filipino is making a big name to international scene or making things that surely make us proud.. Lets just act that its normal to us to excel in anything that we do and deep inside our hearts we Filipino are proud of them..
