âIn every language on the planet, from prison yards in the Philippines to Thrilltheworld.com, that will be the beautiful, grand leg acy of Michael Jackson.â

That was how Quincy Jones, the legendary record prod ucer and artist who produced Michaelâs monster hit albums, ended his beautiful tribute to the late entertainer that came out Tuesday, June 30, in the Los Ange les Times. In using the word âthat,â Quincy was referring to Michaelâs music. Q uincy wrote, âItâs no accident that almost three decades later, no matter where I go in the world, in every club and karaoke bar, like clockwork, you hear âBi llie Jean,â âBeat It,â âWanna Be Starting Something,â âRock With Youâ and âThri ller.â â

So take a bow, all 1,400 inmates of the Cebu provinc ial jail whose version of Michaelâs âThrillerâ video is an Internet sensation. Obviously, the man who guided Michael in recording âThrillerâ and who wrote a p ersonal, heartfelt ode to him in the LA Times piece, has seen the jailbirdsâ vi deo too. The inmates recently recreated the dance as a tribute to Quincyâs tale nt and dear friend.

Quincy also meant that the Philippines is an obscure place in the planet and us
ed it to push the "from end-to-end" context of his ode.

Tita oo ang galing talaga nila.

Dapat palayain na lahat sila.

no raymond, it's not the country it's the place which is in prison yard...don't
be too naive in your own interpretation, it's just that we made a good impress
ion by uniting all the prisoners to do a recreational dance steps which gave th
em some sort of "hope & inspiration" in bringing entertainment despite bein
g in an "obscure place" that is the prison cell--and not the Philippines.

Anyway, long live the legacy of the king of Pop!

Mga Bay sa Cebu Jail ngiga ninyo a' angayan kaayo kamo sa inyong sayaw "Thrille

he!he! Kini tribute nato sa King of Pop si Dong Michael Joseph Jackson RIP

Mr. Jones comments is indeed an inspiration for these people who give their ful
l talents and further just to prove that reforming theselves by way of emulatin
g a musical genius that is MJ (RIP) is possible in one way or the other.

Why so negative Raymond? Just appreciate the positive things in life. Cheers!

It's funny how people can have a twisted and cynical view of what many thought
was a lovely gesture of appreciation from Quincy Jones for what the Cebu inmate
s have done with 'Thriller'. If I happen to be working with or living next to
Raymond, I will make sure I do not speak or hang out with him for I would rathe
r maintain looking at the bright side of life than drown in the toxic quagmire
of his cynical point of view. Avoid toxic people like him. It will not do you
any good.

Sharp thought, Raymond. And painfully true.

probably you mean eulogy.

Eh so what! kung obscure at far end planet in the universe.

yan ang hirap sa sobrang matalino eh and dami nakikita wla din naman magawang m
atino sa bayan parang pulitiko.

loser!

"Quincy also meant that the Philippines is an obscure place in the planet and u
sed ..."
The Philippines is only an obscure place for those who only got as far as the 4
th grade. Does everyone know where Saudi Arabia is?

And, so what Raymond? Spit it out, what do you exactly mean? That the Philippin
es is just a tiny speck in the radar of the global entertainment scene? Flash N
ews: We are and you don't have to rub it in.

I guess, mentioning the prison yard in the Philippines just shows how Michael J
ackson has left an indelible mark in almost every people's heart across the glo
be. It's also a story about Michael Jackson so much as it is a story about the
Filipinos' love for the pop culture icon. I believe we should just take pride i
n the fact that we are so artistic we are equal to any people around the world
even if that involves imitating others. But who cares?

Can't believe how pathetic the previous comment.

The news piece was taken out of context. Obscure place? Yes becaus the Thrill
er performance happens in a prison facility.

Stop being so shallow and onion-skinned.

If above comment wants to raise the level of patriotism amongst Filipino, the b
est way is to raise the consciousness of the people with regards to propriety.
Propriety in governance and in our work here and abroad.

We should not took pride that our professionals are willing to accept non-skill
ed jobs for overseas work. There is only practicality in that, no pride at all
.

@Raymond. Good point!

Raymond, what's your point? Your English is awful.

True, in a sense.

But irony also meant any place where Jackson's music is not likely to flourish
but does.

well, no. it's just you saying that, and all your unfounded criticisms about th
e country.

all of my friends are Michael Jackson fans, we would really miss the King of Po
p.

Aw c'mon, must you be so racial?
So sad, man.

Baket ang pinoy, lagi naghahanap ng di maganda sa mga nasasabi ng iba.. tas big
lang sasama ang loob pag me nakita na di maganda. Wala nmn di maganda sa sinabi
ah. OA ka naman.. Padagdag na rin.. Stupid. Ayun..

Why is it that we think of our selves as the lowest people on the planet?, that
when they just mention anything about us or international performer with just
Filipino blood, etc.. We get crazy like hell.. In TV, Newspaper, Internet.. its
like we won the lottery jackpot?, its like were the best in the planet.. we s
ay that we should be proud of our selves, but actually we lowered our selves to
the lowest point.. If a Filipino is making a big name to international scene o
r making things that surely make us proud.. Lets just act that its normal to us
to excel in anything that we do and deep inside our hearts we Filipino are pro
ud of them..

all of you!!! beat it!!! hehehehe

Face the truth, Filipinos are starving with attention. Unequivocal stage catche
rs if they got chance, sideline morons will clapped and shout their hearts' con
tent they are proud they are it and PUKE to your wildest dreams should one of t
he clan failed. Kick the butt, one rule of the game - serve the famous while it
is still hot and spit / curse the one to hell who errs (forget achievements, w
ho cares)....eg Willie R, Freddie A.

I believe there's some truth to what i've read that the Filipino race needs con
stant affirmation lest its existence.

Filipino - the race that needs constant affirmation lest it exist at all. . .

E KASI ITONG UNKNOWN NA ITO,SIGURADONG TALANGKA ANG LAMAN NG UTAK NITO!MANHID K

I don't understand how we can glorify inmates. They come up with a dance to a
popular song and now they become pseudo celebrities. Do we know the types of c
rimes they have committed? Have we thought about the real people whose lives t
hey negatively impacted?

Sure, I realize that compassion in a Catholic country like ours will tend to fo
cus on the rehabilitation and forgiveness of inmates but I can't help but wonde
r that there could be murderours villains thinking that by participating in a j
ail-wide program like that will absolve them of their crimes.

It makes for a quick YouTube laugh but at the end of the day, when you log off
from your computer, these inmates will still be serving time for their crime to
the state and its citizens. The point I am making is that rather than focus on
an uninformed comment from someone who obviously has no clue about the Philipp
ines, we should think about how we view antics like this that promotes the wron
g message -- we're turning those criminals into comedians and forget the lives
their crimes have affected.

Hey unknown! I like what you said. Just watch your grammar.

"Why is it that we think of ourselves as the lowest people on the planet? When
anything is just mentioned about us or if some international performer is said
to have Filipino blood, etc.. we then get crazy like hell! When this happens on
TV, the newspapers and the Internet, it seems as if we won the lottery jackpot
! It makes us already think of ourselves as the best on the planet. We say that
we should be proud of ourselves but actually we lower ourselves to the lowest
point when we do this. If a Filipino makes it big in the international scene or
achieves things that surely make us proud, why don't we just act as if it were
normal for us to excel in anything? Of course, while doing so, let's just feel
deep down in our hearts that we're proud to be Pinoy!"

i idolize Michael Jackson because of his great achievement in the Pop Music. fa
rewell King of Pop.

Just playing the devil's advocate here. How would you feel if you're the victim
of one of the inmates in the video? It's all amusing, I guess, but it's also i
nsensitive to the agrieved parties, don't you think?

none sense!

@unknown August 23 at 2:34pm: Well said. I share the same sentiments.

i see Raymond's point i.e. Jones' probable underlying comment about the Phil.
nevertheless, just like everyone else, (and I would like to believe that) Jones
' referral to prisoners' performance was in good faith. anyway, the real subjec
t was MJ's excellent music.

btw, Raymond, that's quite interesting how analyzed the comment. interesting po
int.
