MARIFE Necesito, who landed an important role in âMammoth,â which stars Academy
and Golden Globe Award nominee, Michelle Williams, and acclaimed actor Gael Ga
rcia Bernal, shared with us the link to the trailer of her international film (
posted on the bottom of this blog). âMammothâ is the first English-language fil
m of Swedish writer-director Lukas Moodysson.

As we reported earlier, in âMammoth,â Marife plays Gloria, a mother of two sons
who leaves the Philippines to work as the nanny of the daughter (Sophie Nyweid
e) of a successful New York couple, played by Gael and Michelle. When Gaelâs bu
sinessman character goes to Thailand, he realizes that he wants to change his l
ife. This development sets off a dramatic chain of events that impact the chara
cters of Marife, Michelle and Sophie.

Marife informed us that she filmed her scenes in New York, Sweden and the Phili
ppines, specifically in Subic and Bataan. The trailer of the film prominently f
eatures Marife, including an emotional scene where she speaks in Tagalog to her
two sons on the phone. The two sons are also shown on a beach in the Philippin
es, as shot by Lukasâ cinematographer, Marcel Zyskind, whose credits include An
gelina Jolieâs âA Mighty Heart.â

Marife shared that she had to dub a few of her lines in a dubbing st
udio in Makati. She also told us via e-mail that in anticipation of the filmâs
release early next year, she is doing phone interviews with the Swedish press,
as arranged by Memfis Film, one of the production companies involved in the mak
ing of âMammoth.â

The Filipina actress added that Lukas is still making final editing work on âMa
mmoth.â Lukas is the highly praised filmmaker of films like âLilja 4-ever,â âSh
ow Me Loveâ and âTogether.â Lukas, who made the final decision to pick Marife f
or the part, was hailed by his esteemed compatriot, the late Ingmar Bergman, as
a âyoung master.â

Marife said she enjoyed working with Michelle, whose credits include Ang Leeâs
âBrokeback Mountain,â and Gael, the Mexican thespian whoâs enjoying a sterling
international career with such films as âBabel,â âThe Motorcycle Diariesâ and
âAmores Perros.â

OUR interviews over the years with Fil-Am actor Alec Mapa, whether by e-mail or
in person, have always been laugh riots. At the pre-show reception of the rece

star of âUgly Betty,â many TV shows, films and stage productions when our colle
ague, Peter Gonzaga, turned on his video camera and mike. The resulting video c
lip is just a sample of the sassy wit of Alec, whom my wife Janet and I admired
since we first saw him in his acclaimed monologue, âI Remember Mapa.â

Alec came on time to the event which raised funds for the laudable Filipino Ame
rican Library (FAL), which is located in the historic Filipinotown of LA. The a
ctor, who is committed to various charities and foundations, was going to be aw
arded FALâs Role Model Award.

Well, many hours and several glasses of wine later, and after terrific performa

ard. Alecâs hair has gone askew and despite having the tough task of delivering
an acceptance speech after those excellent musical numbers, he still managed t

        By Ruben Nepales

ON my drive away from the Greek Theatre where my wife and I just watched our ka
babayan Arnel Pineda and his Journey bandmates stage the first of two very succ
essful shows in LA, I stopped by a gas station.

As I pumped gas into our car, a young white woman approached me and asked if I
just came from the concert. When I said yes, the woman said she watched the sho
w too. Then she peppered me with questions, the gist of which boiled to one thi
ng: she wondered if the many Filipinos who trooped to the Greek Theatre that Su
nday evening knew the songs of Journey.

Although the lady said she knew that Neal Schon first saw Arnel when the former
came across a video clip of Arnel singing a Journey hit on YouTube (back when
he was doing Journey tribute songs in the Philippines), she appeared baffled th
at people in the Philippines know Journey. I told her that I was familiar with
those Journey anthems in the 1980s. She asked me if I was born in the US or in
the Philippines. I said I was born and raised in the Philippines and I was back
home when I first heard those Journey tunes.

(Editor's note: Here's one of the video clips on YouTube that perhaps got Journ
ey's attention.)

<embe
d type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344" src="http://www
.youtube.com/v/6HjcCzgCCX0&hl=en&fs=1" allowfullscreen="true"><
/object>

I gave her the benefit of the doubt -- the woman appeared to be simply ignorant
about the Philippines. Having come from the concert where she must have been s
truck by the presence of so many Filipinos, she was now very curious about Fili
pinos and the Philippines. She said, "It was nice to meet you" and walked back
to her friend.

When I finished pumping gas, I slid back into the car and recounted
the somewhat strange encounter to my wife. The incident reflected the fact that
Journeyâs decision to hire a Filipino guy as its frontman has sparked all sort
s of discussions among the groupâs fans, especially on the blogosphere. Some ex
pressed surprise at the choice, with some comments tinged with racist undertone
s. But most Journey followers, including the thousands who filled arenas in Nor
th and South America and Europe to watch the bandâs 2008 road tour concerts, ar
e ecstatic about Arnel. The groupâs new CD, "Revelation," has become one of Jou
rneyâs bestselling albums.

Driving back on the road, I chuckled at the thought that yes, many of our kabab
ayans wouldnât have bothered to make the trek to the Greek Theatre if Arnel was
not in the band. But the fellow Pinoys who showed up in throngs to watch Arnel
werenât complete ignoramuses about Journeyâs songs either. If only the young l
ady knew -- we Filipinos are a sentimental lot who know all the lyrics of soft
rock ballads like Journeyâs "Open Arms" and "Faithfully." We can all sing like
Arnel Pineda, too. Well, that part is true only in our karaoke-wired imaginatio
n.

Read my full account of how LA welcomed Arnel as Journeyâs lead vocalist in my
column on Philippine Daily Inquirer ("Only In Hollywood: Arnel, Journey welcomed wit
h 'Open Arms' "). And if there are still doubters out there, hereâs an excerpt
of Phil Galloâs review of the concert in Variety:

"Hits and songs that sound like hits dominate Journey's 90-minute set in one of
the summer's most consistently successful package tours, a sign that the lates
t edition of Journey has assimilated new singer Arnel Pineda and returned to a
strict focus on their hitmaking days of the late '70s and early '80s. Material
from their Wal-Mart-only release âRevelationâ stands up well alongside the clas
sics; album is tailor-made to attract fans of the Steve Perry era of the band.

At the second of two sold-out shows at the Greek, Pineda proved he has crossed
the line from Perry Karaoke master to respectable lead singer. That the new alb
um taps into the energy and blueprint of Journey's hitmaking era makes for a cl
ear formula for Pineda to follow and simultaneously gives a band an opportunity
to maintain a focus in a career-spanning set."

At the rate weâve been getting text messages that Brillante "Dante" Mendoza won
this or that award in an international film festival, heâs probably the Filipi
no director with the most number of wins in these events held all over the worl

We have become almost blasé to hear that Dante has won in yet another film fes
t. The prolific filmmakerâs latest triumph is at the 6th Vladivostok Internatio
nal Film Festival of Asian Pacific Countries where he won the Best Director awa
rd while his lead, Gina Pareño, earned the Best Actress honors for "Serbis." D
anteâs victories are raising awareness in the international film community of t

Festivalâs sidebar, Orizzonti, âJayâ and âMelancholia,â is proving to be right
.

(Photo: "Jay" delegation on the Lido [from left]: distributor Ferdy Lapuz, acto
r-cinematographer Carlo Mendoza, lead actor Baron Geisler and writer-director-p
roducer Francis Xavier E. Pasion)

Financial Times came out with the first review of director Francis Xavier E. Pa
sionâs âJayâ and it is very encouraging. The London paperâs critic, Nigel Andre
ws, cited Francisâ directorial debut which stars Baron Geisler, Coco Martin and
Flor Salanga, as one of the standouts so far in the festival on the Lido.

Andrews wrote, âOn the Venice fringe there have been two films to cheer: an Ita
lian reconstruction and a Philippine satire. Pier Paolo Pasoliniâs 1963 La Rabb
ia (âRageâ) was a potion of screen rhetoric, never before seen in the undiluted
form the director intendedâ¦Giuseppe Bertolucci (Bernardoâs brother) has re-as
sembled the old material, added some never seen, and puts before Italy and the
world Pasoliniâs true original rage, a scintillating montage of 20th-century ne
ws footage â from Mussolini to Marilyn Monroe â unified and signposted by a gen
iusâs vision.

âPerfidious media managers; treachery in the name of truth. They are everywhere
today, not least in the lies of âreality TV.â Francis Xavier Pasionâs Jay, fro
m the Philippines, is an acutely funny tale of intrusive telly reporters, beari
ng down on a family bereaved by a gay sonâs murder to make their grief part of
a nationâs infotainment. They start by poking a lens at the familyâs faces as t
hey learn the news; they end by getting them to act, or re-enact, every emotion
al convulsion that needs a second, third or umpteenth take. The remuneration? T
he reporters will help find the sonâs killer. By the time they do, even the mur
derer, we know, will be signing release forms and hungrily securing his 15 minu
tes of fame.â

Congratulations to the âJayâ delegation now in Venice! Next, Lav Diaz unveils h
is âMelancholiaâ on Saturday. I have high hopes for Lavâs second consecutive Or
izzonti (Horizons) entry too.

SE are exciting times for Philippine independent cinema. Pinoy indie films are
being selected left and right as official selections in major film festivals ar
ound the world.

(Photo: RP pride on the red carpet in the Venice Film Festival where "Jay" open
ed Orizzonti, a competition sidebar: actor-cinematographer Carlo Mendoza, lead
actor Baron Geisler, Venice Film Festival director Marco Mueller, selection com
mittee member Paolo Bertolin, writer-director-producer Francis Xavier E. Pasion
and distributor Ferdy Lapuz).

I just heard via e-mail from director Francis Xavier E. Pasion, whose Cinemalay
a winning entry, âJay,â just opened the Orizzonti (Horizons) sidebar of the ong
oing Venice Film Festival.

While Francis sounded ecstatic about the reception of âJayâ at the PalaLido and
PalaBiennale in the festival on the Lido, he also expressed his wish that the
Philippine government and the private sector would support more enthusiasticall
y the fledging indie film industry which has been reaping honors for the countr
y.

The director of the film which stars Baron Geisler, Coco Martin and my long-tim
e friend Flor Salanga wrote in his email to me, âI am extremely happy for Phili
ppine cinema's participation in the Venice International Film Festival, but at
the same time, I feel that there is more to be done to be more competitive in t
he world stage. I envy some of the films that are given full support by the gov
ernment and private sectors in their respective countries.â

He clarified, âWe are grateful for the FDCP (Film Development Council of the Ph
ilippines) for their support for our film, but we hope that the government woul
d give more funding to the agency because more films are getting invitations fr
om festivals abroad, and there is a resurgence of independent films that need f
unding from the agency.â

Lav Diaz, whose âMelancholiaâ closes the Orizzonti on Saturday, September 6, ha
d earlier expressed similar sentiments but in, let me say, colorful Tagalog ter
ms.

The filmmaker who is going places with his first feature film added, âFDCP and
the NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) are the two government
institutions that are directly involved with the funding of independent films.
â

He shared, âThe international audience in Venice could hardly believe that we c
an produce a good film in 10 days with a budget of only 1.5 million pesos (25,0
00 euros).

Speaking about the subject matter of âJay,â Francis said, âSome of the Italian
documentary film directors and media practitioners said that they can relate wi
th the strong message of media manipulation and the prevalence of infotainment
in Italy.â

Both he and Francis have a chance of shouting âMabuhay ang pelikulang Pilipino!
â from the podium come awards night on Sunday, September 7.

, in part, "â¦a University of Arkansas economist actually used 'American Idol'
as a means to study racial discrimination in the labor market. He uncovered a '
positive correlation' between the race of the viewers and contestants when the
competition got hot. In Malubay's case, she has the backing of Filipinos in her
hometown and in the Philippines in her pursuit. Given the small population (an
d the latter's ineligibility to vote), Malubay's appeal will have to transcend
race. That may be exactly what both sides are hoping for."

Let's hope that Ramiele does indeed transcend race and get the support of a vas
t majority of Americans who vote on "American Idol." Jasmine Trias nearly made
it because she was able to achieve that. What many are saying is that Ramiele h
as truly what it takes to be an "American Idol" so with the combined support of
Filipino-Americans (and they do not comprise a "small population" in the US),
Asian-Americans and mainstream Americans, she may realize her dream of becoming
the first brown "Idol."

on a Pinoy transvestite won Thursday the top prize at the Berlinale's Teddy Que
er Film Awards.

"The Amazing Truth about Queen Raquela," which stars Raquela Rios of Cebu, bagg
ed the Best Feature Film Award in the sidebar of the Berlin International Film
festival.

"Queen Raquela" was cited by the jury "for its ability to address race, gender
and poverty in an entertaining way, while also playing with audiences' expectat
ions of form."

Filipino director Auraeus Solito won the same award in 2006 for his acclaimed "
Ang Pagdadalaga ni (The Blossoming of) Maximo Oliveros."

The prize includes a 3,000 Euro endowment to the film's director, Olaf de Fleur
Johannesson. Arlene Cuevas co-produced "Queen Raquela" which also features act
ors from the Philippines and Iceland, including Olivia Galudo, Brax Villa, Amor
Alingasa, Raniel Dave Balasabas, Ren Christian Balasabas, Stefan C. Schaefer,
Edith Galudo, Luis Labandero, Archie Modequillo, Reynaldo Palatulon and Alexis
Yap.

"Queen Raquela," which also tapped a Pinoy crew that includes Alexis, Butch Mad
dul, Ragnar Santos, and Beverly Tañedo, was shot in the Philippines, Thailand,
Iceland, Denmark, France and the US.

Olaf wrote the plot summary in the film's IMDB.com entry: "Raquela is a poor la
dyboy prostitute who dreams of escaping to Paris, France to supposedly find her
knight on Champs-Elysees, marry and have a family⦠But she has little chance
of getting a French visaâ¦

"When Raquela is discovered by a photographer, she gets a job working as a webc

ilipino online porn star and earns ten times the average salary in the Philippi
nes. Wanting to escape, she tries over the Internet to find that special guy wh
o will take her to Paris but she is not fortunate: she is stood-up month after
month at the airport.

"Things change when she meets online Valery, the only ladyboy in Iceland lookin
