How to lace up for the holidays

By Apples Aberin Sadhwani
Philippine Daily Inquirer

ACCORDING to Elle.com, Muccia Prada described lace as the most important fabric in a woman’s life, accompanying her at birth, marriage, death and many milestones in between.

It’s no wonder the Prada designer centered her 2008 Fall collection around this fabric. Other influential designers and brands (Giorgio Armani, La Perla, Derek Lam and Erin Fetherston) also used it for their collections.

From the boudoir to the boardroom to the dance floor, lace is the connecting thread this season.

But, take note, the trend is a far cry from the way your grandmother donned the feminine, frilly fabric. Instead of a flouncy, romantic, somewhat old-fashioned feel, lace is now made to appear smarter, subtly suggestive.

Want to try out this trend for your dressed-up holiday happenings? Keep these few tips in mind:

Unless you’re going for an ultra-feminine look, why not match a lace top with mannish trousers to create a bit of irony? You can also try wearing a lace skirt or dress with a more structured or tailored jacket.

Modernize the look of lace by wearing the potentially somber fabric with jolts of color. A black lace dress, for example, can look fresh with a wide patent aubergine belt or ultra-bright hot pink pumps (not worn together, mind you).

Better yet, why not wear the fabric in a variety of hues. Imagine Chantilly lace in an irreverent cobalt blue and you’ll get what I mean.

Combine lace with other fabrics like Mikado silk or silk satin for added texture. Designer Ivar Aseron successfully did this for his latest collection, which was modern and streamlined yet feminine.

Going for the classic black lace dress? Look foxy, not frumpy, by accessorizing with jet-black beads or chunky silver or white gold pieces, instead of the usual pearls. And wear luscious red lips for added oomph.

Little touches of lace can go a long way. Dresses or tops with lace cutouts or inlays are perfect options when you don’t want to overdose on the trend.

Don’t be afraid to show a bit of skin. Lace can be delicately sexy, after all. Just remember that the key words in this case are subtle and appropriate.
