Pinaskohan be: Christmas parties on sidewalks

By Fr. Heinz Kulueke, SVD (2000)

PINASKOHAN BE,” meaning ‘Christmas gift please,’ the little skinny boy of about seven, clothed in dirty rags greeted me that evening from a distance, a few months before Christmas. Read More »

Christmas blessings

By Edgardo J. Canoza

MY WIFE AND I were married in November 1963. Like other normal couples, we looked forward to a bright future. We dreamed dreams of great magnitude with high degree of expectation of realizing them soon in our lifetime. Both of us worked hard for our children knowing that God only helps those who help themselves. Read More »

It all started at Instant Messenger. I was a fresh graduate and the newest member of the staff in our department. I learned to use Instant Messenger because we constantly use it at work. Vinz, an officemate and not yet a friend then, was in my I.M. buddies list. The first time I practiced IMing, he was the only “available” buddy. I practiced IM by sending him phrases like Hi there, hi gorgeous.  I was only trying to be friendly but then he replied: Stop it or I’ll block you. I did not realize before that he was not exactly Mr. Nice Guy. I should have taken the hints. He rarely smiled and most of the time, he looked so serious. So I said Sorry. I was just practicing. He did not reply and I was embarrassed. Read More »

To my daughter on her 24th birthday

By Julie Parian

I NEVER WANTED you in my life. I wanted to die when I learned I was going to have you. How could I put up with the shame? With the failure? You would be the crest the family has to wear and bear. A stamp on my chest to forever signify I am the guava in a basket of nectarines. To have you, I would be scarred forever but I just couldn’t do away with you. I was more scared of being tagged a quitter than a soulless girl who would end up in purgatory. Read More »

My Christmas wish
