Osmeña’s populist pretensions

03/27/07

Posted under Genuine Opposition, John Osmeña, Readers' Blog Posts, Senatorial Bets

JOHN OSMEÑA’S anti-VAT [value-added tax] political ad is totally disgusting. It has marks of a populist, anti-development rhetoric. He provides no alternatives to the VAT and gives no concrete justifications for his objection aside from the supposedly anti-poor effects of the law.

As seen in almost all countries, populist policies are actually more anti-poor because of their damaging effects on the economy and the society, as a whole.

If John Osmeña really thinks that VAT is wrong, then, what is his opinion on his partymates and other GO [Genuine Opposition] candidates who voted in favor of VAT?

john osmena is an example of the “genuine opposition” who oppose for the sake of opposing. they profess opposing for the sake of the “masses”. they are old and thinking politicians and cannot deny they are also bright thinkers. but for the sake of opposing whatever economic gains the “opposite side” have made, they are successful in picturing whatever grim picture there is in the Philippines - so that any foreign or local investor planning to stake in our country think twice before they do. then the “masses” whom these opposers “love” loss the chance for work, for food, for shelter.. and they are quick to blame the government as the culprit.

why did you not give the P1M balato you got from the mahjong winnings of erap to the poor?

and look at the faces of the “genuine opposition”– erap, john osmena, maceda, binay, with kind support from the group of the usual hecklers like cortez. wow!

please naman, for once, think of the poor Filipino people.

It is not just Osmeña’s ad which is disgusting but the Genuine Opposition’s as well. I find it so negative and so disappointing. It typifies the Filipino crab mentality. Shouldn’t they as leaders of our nation take the lead in espousing positive values in this divided nation?

Why couldn’t the Genuiine Opposition just tell us what are their alternative solutions to issues on poverty, criminiality, etc. rather than attack the Administration? Aren’t most of them incumbent legislators?
