I WAS reading the letters to the editor, when the article “Forget impeachment bid” by Ms Emma Requilme (Inquirer, 06/01/07) caught my attention.
At last! Someone has decided to forget impeachment. I’m so tired of hearing people talking about the impeachment of the president. They only look at the negative sides of the administration. But I think, they didn’t take the time to glance at the positive side.
I agree with the point of Ms. Requilme that we should forget about impeachment and pay attention to our hungry fellow citizens. Having an impeachment trial would be such a waste of time. There are people waiting to be fed. So, the question would be: Which is important? The impeachment or our hungry fellow citizens?
I always hear activists cry out loud “Oust Gloria!” But if you asked them the question above, surely they will choose the good of our fellow citizens. Then, if that’s what they want, the good of our people, we must wait for our president’s move. So let us forget impeachment and think of the future of our people and our country.

Didagen “Mr. Shut Up Dilangalen, former spokesperson of ousted president Joseph Estrada, said he was not inclined to go along with the opposition’s agenda to revive an impeachment case against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Dilangalen said, “I don’t see any good and convincing reason to impeach her. The country must move forward. Impeachment will only serve as a drawback to our steadily growing economy. We are all losers in the end. (Inquirer, 5/19/07)

Just saw your posting now. You said democracy and economic take-off. A stable economy would come first before a real democracy.
You agree that Arroyo’s powers are not absolute. As attested by the SC ruling against EO 464 among others.

Pian,
Exactly, if we are going to reach for ideals it should be based on freedom AND a good economy. Not only one or the other.
Dictatorships for economic growth has been tried in the Philippines and it failed. We should opt for democracy AND economic growth.
BTW, Gloria’s governance is not YET absolute thanks to the consistent resistance of pro-democracy groups. However Gloria CONSISTENTLY attempts to get absolute powers and maneuvers constantly to get this end. This is the reason why Gloria is cursed to receive all this flak and criticism from society.

Singapore is not truly free although while they are freed from the slavery of poverty, the government remains autocratic. On the other hand, people in our country are free to oppose the government (so GMA’s powers are not absolute), while our people are slaves to poverty, so that doesn’t make us truly free, unlike first world countries like the US, Great Britain, France, Japan etc.
