I RECENTLY posed this challenge to some like-minded colleagues: draft a want ad for this country’s next president, then let’s see how we are able to articulate the skills, qualifications, and necessary track record of the Philippines’s Chief Executive. After all, we cannot even begin to seriously assess our current crop of presidential hopefuls if we don’t know what we are looking for in the first place. I honestly thought that it would be quite easy because the exercise had to be somewhat similar to writing an ad for a CEO of a large corporation. How hard could that be, right? (The power of Google, and cut and paste…)

Well, I apparently underestimated the task. While doing some online research on the subject it occurred to me that maybe my entire premise was wrong in the first place. The Philippines is not a large corporation. It is not large geographically, politically, economically, or even diplomatically the way the First World countries, or even China or India, are. It is not even a dark horse the way Russia is often viewed. In the local setting, the Philippines is not like one of those multinationals that are housed in one of the ritzier office spaces along Ayala Avenue. It might not even be located in any of the central business districts. If the Philippines were an enterprise, it could probably be considered a startup, or a relatively young SME at the most.

Therefore, the kind of president that we need is not somebody who will saunter into the office in an extremely expensive suit — with an army of executive assistants, senior vice presidents, and consultants in tow — and be a “boardroom executive.” We need someone who has the mindset of an entrepreneur and who will be able to dig through the mud (literally, sometimes) to get things done.

But because I’m a fan of social enterprises and social enterprises, I’d take it up a notch and venture to say that the Philippines could be likened to a social enterprise, and therefore needs a president who has the mindset of a social entrepreneur.

What’s in a social entrepreneur?

According to the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurs are “unusually courageous men and women that pursue their vision of a better world by applying extraordinary creativity and resourcefulness to some of the world’s most challenging issues. They are not just dreamers… They have the rare ability to ground their dreams in reality and translate them into pragmatic, goal-oriented and measurable action. As a result, they have produced some of the most innovative approaches to social, economic and political problems that continue to defy conventional means of action [boldface mine].”

On the other hand, Stacey Childress (2006) of the Harvard Business School, talks of the need for a “Theory of Change” — a belief about how actions will contribute to the fulfillment of a larger vision. This “theory” could be focused on either local or systemic change, but it has to define how the social enterprise’s activities will contribute to the big picture.

Social entrepreneurs, therefore, are visionaries — wild, passionate, big-picture thinkers — first and foremost. They are unafraid of dreaming of WHAT COULD BE; to them, “impossible” means “I’ll Make it POSSIBLE.” Who in our current crop of presidentiable-wannabes thinks that way?

Moreover, social entrepreneurs are able to link current gaps with current givens and future possibilities in ways that are extremely innovative, creative, “out of the universe” and yet very, very logical. They are unafraid of asking the important question — “Why not?” — and going, “What next?” For instance, one of my favorite social enterprises, Rags 2 Riches, linked the existing realities of dismal economic conditions in Payatas and the nanays’ current means of livelihood — rag-making — to the big dream of making “designer rags.” Throw renowned fashion designer Rajo Laurel into the mix, and you’ve got a kick-ass concept (which just recently won an international business plan competition) and beautiful bags that even Angelina Jolie will buy because (1) they’re great products and (2) they support fair trade.

Imagine this: If we could reinvent the Philippines using the social enterprise model, what would it look like? More importantly, are any of our politicians willing to take the risk of painstaking — but powerful — transformation? Or are they simply promising the same old Spartan slippers and simply rebranding them as Havaianas?

Social entrepreneurs also know what their goals look like and, therefore, how to know when they’ve already achieved them. Social enterprises are not just lofty causes filled with empty promises. At the heart of it all, social enterprises are income-generating operations for which metrics, indicators, and impact are very important. At the end of the day, we will know where we stand and what else we need to do to fill in the gaps.

Think about it: if we had a president who at the very least was as entrepreneurial, as passionate, as savvy, as creative, and as progressive as some of our country’s top (social) entrepreneurs, wouldn’t you feel a tad more hopeful about our future and more willing to help make things work?

I fully agree with the insights in your article. Might be better for our country if instead of actors, the likes of Zoble de Ayalas and Manual Pangilinan will run for President. ;-)

Eric

I salute your input on the subject. But I fear that it will take more than that to keep our hopes up. Please don’t get me wrong, but the country also needs a president that has a strong will and influence on the people he or she serves. He or she should also have the ability to strike fear to corrupt, greedy and self-centered people and influence them to change. He or she should know where to draw the line against poverty and treachery in the government. He or she should know how to compromise with activist, moralist and religious leaders on how we can still live with our ideals and morals still intact.

I come to realize that now matter how good the president is, there is always a chance that his or her progress will get compromised by the very same people that works for him or her. Our political system is too much smeared and contaminated by malevolent, greedy and self-centered people that are in no way helpful or productive to the country.

I am saying that our system should be more than cooperative, but should also be self-sacrificing to the ideals and goals of that would be president.

I still believe that that hopeful president is still among us, but is hindered by corrupt, self-centered and greedy people who prevent progress and change to be the guiding force and principles towards our nation.

I believe that their fundamental support is the key towards getting the next best president for our country.

But until that time comes, no hopeful president, not even the best entrepreneur-bet is of a difference to us.

Saint-Never

I have what it takes..

The proposal is interesting, yet somewhat unrealistic. I believe we will need to do a lot of purging first for any ideal system to correct the errors of this society. Not everything depends on the leader, although he has the power to influence the people. A democracy works because the people make it so themselves. Even if the late John Paul II would rise up from the grave and for some reason he gets elected as our president, there is no assurance that we as a nation will succeed for the same people who brought the country to its current dismal state are still seated and serving their own interests.

We have been implementing diplomacy and democracy for the longest time to solve our nation’s problems. The problem is, our problems themselves persisted for quite some time now because we have been combatting the problem with the wrong solutions and approach. In terms of medicine if the problem were a bacteria, we’ve been treating it with low dosage of antibiotics that it’s already developed resistance to the meds and has grown fangs and claws, it has already grown into a super bug.

There are two ways to get things done — through peaceful means and by force. I already mentioned that the peaceful means of diplomatic solutions have not worked. Then you’ve guessed it right, it’s time to use force. But before we do that, let’s get a good leader like what you mentioned earlier. This will be considered the transition stage.

I propose that every government official be banished from their current position. If your blood has become bad, you don’t transfuse blood immediately because the new blood will only be contaminated — you need to filter it with the help of a dialysis machine. Election is manipulated most of the time thus it is no longer effective; since we will select the best moral social entrepreneural leader anyways, I think it is only just that he would select the replacements.

The Filipino people have proven to be an abusive people, he does not respect the law and he will do anything to circumvent the process; he is irresponsible most of the times for his action. Along EDSA alone, how many times would a car owner attempt to bribe a traffic enforcer for a traffic violation that he has willfully and knowingly committed? How many citizens actually use the pedestrian lanes and overpasses? If we cannot follow rules as simple as these, how can we be entrusted with greater responsibility, such as freedom? How do you correct this kind of persistent and erratic behavior? Again, my proposal is by force.

Also, I think one of the things that contribute to our current political problems is because of our judicial process, that everyone is presumed innocent until proven otherwise. I say that we change this especially if you’re serving in the government: GUILTY unless proven otherwise. And let’s impose more severe punishment for erring government officials.

So to sum everything, to make this proposal of yours work:
1.) Elect a social entrepeneur for president who has proven his moral grounding
2.) Purge the government of all its officials and force change backed by martial law; impose more severe punitive action against erring government officials.

This may sound radical to most readers as the Martial Law imposed in the 70’s was infamous, but then again the conditions of the said era are different from the ones mentioned above, for one we started with the wrong leader. Marcos was right in imposing martial law, however, he was not right in himself. That is why a moral leader respected by all should be put into power before imposing an iron fist. Just my yet again devaluated two-Philippine cents.

Eugene Dela Cruz

I do agree in your article, I just hope your article be written or be translated to Filipino language to be well understood by the Bakya Crowd in our country. To point out that Actors are only good in acting, memory work, have no thinking of their own but only follow what is in script they memorize and act on it. We need more to educate our voters to pick the right person, elimanate the TRAPOS.

larry

in running an enterprise, size should not keep you from making things corporate. what matters is the management framework that your corporate leader instills. whether he is all suited up or plainly spruced, by end of the day its the style of management that counts. the entrepreneuaral spirit, while valued, should really be at the functional level which on the government aspect is akin to mayoral or provincial governatorial posts. you have got great ideas and when packaged well could be worth planning for.

Christian

We’ll said. But it is important to remember that the President is only as good as the congressmen that make the laws for the President to enforce.

So, let’s keep that in mind and not vote in people who cling to the Constitution when it serves them and ignore it when it doesn’t (e.g. a certain lady in the Senate) or when we exchange our vote for a wad of tossed cash or slice of bibingka.

And remember, an actor portrays a false senses of themselves and so is a totally baseless way to judge their character as a politician. Filipinos have already suffered that mistake and we should remember it when we hit the coming polls.

David Rubio

I also agree with the article. New Zealand is also run like a social enterprise in my view. New Zealand is one of the most progressive and self-sufficient countries in the world. The only thing lacking in NZ is manpower but that didn’t stop the NZ gov’t. from coming up with new immigration laws to address this. Althought sometimes immigration becomes an issue in NZ politics, in the end all parties agree to the benefit it brings to the country.

Emmanuel Gomez

Yes it is sometimes good to dream and think what is ideal. But if a person like Zobel de Ayala would become president what about his personal gain? An ideal president for the country is somebody who is intelligent to run a country yet not corrupt and who is sincere but where can we find such a person? If they were poor they will enrich themselves if they were rich they will also use it to their personal advantage.

Dana and Debbie

Hats off to Nina and this wonderful post. She is 100%, completely correct. The vision for the Philippines future should be entrepreneurial but it will take a core group of believers who see that vision and work tirelessly toward its realization….then pass on that passion to their children who, in turn, will do the same. Beautiful article Nina.

Ernie Nucup

The Philippines, and the Filipinos, could be so fortunate just to have a president who is immune to graft, corruption, cronyism, and nepotism. Wishful thinking.

Luvin Candari

The corporate politician, or the political CEO; that idea also crossed my mind. Yes, why not run this government the way corporations are being run. It sounds interesting, but will it work? Business enterprises have this intrinsic character of control. Vision and direction emanates from the boardroom, not so different from a General, plotting strategies from the headquarters. The leader accustomed in this environment will not be tolerant of diverse opinions. Will this approach be congruent to the visayan and mindanaoan aspiration of self determination. the question from Visayas and Mindanao; will it result to a more fiscally independent business units? To achieve more we need to play together yet respectful of each others sensibilities.

Bruce

An SME? Not even close.

The Philippines is one of the largest countries that has ever existed in the history of the planet.

It is larger then any country in the EU, larger then any country in South America but one, and larger then any country in Africa but one. The RP is nearly twice as large as the Roman Empire.

Manila alone is larger then half the countries or the world.

In short, the Philippines is a behemoth and the government is too.

Let’s just take one department. If DepEd was a publicly traded company, it would be the 6th largest employer in the world.

The Philippines is in short too big to be effectively governed by a single large centralized bureaucracy. What we need is a president who does not muck around in the details and try to impose a powerful vision, like an entrepreneur, but someone who will

(a) step back,
(b) realize that he can do little proactive in charge of such a monster, and
(c) empower those who can make a real difference, the local governments, starting with the barangays.

The best-run countries and the best-run companies are small and that makes them entrepreneurial. The Philippines is a large, lumbering, bumbling giant. It needs to become small, flexible, entrepreneurial.

Bruce

Another thought:

Hasn’t this already been tried?

Didn’t someone try to build a visionary “New Society” from the top down?

He was a smart guy — a bar top-notcher — who won a unprecedented second term as president. So, what happened?

It was too big for him to handle. He couldn’t deal with all the myriad problems and fires that popped up but instead of giving up, Marcos seized power and declared martial law. He wasn’t going to let it get out of his control, by golly! He was going to impose his vision by hook or by crook — or by gun.

By the way, I think Luvin is incorrect. Business enterprises are not intrinsically about control. The best leaders, such as Jack Welch, recognize they are not in control and so their first priority is to hire very smart people under them because it is the latter, those closer to the action, that are really in control.

Bruce

One last comment (I promise).

The closest social entrepreneurs that you get in the Philippine political system is the barangay officials, especially in the rural and distant barangays, who are hours away from any other government official. It is they who know the problems first hand and know the gaps. It is they who have the knowledge to make a real difference. They are the ones there on the front-lines.

I don’t want our president to BE a social entrepreneur. I want our next president to CREATE or EMPOWER those that truly can be the social entrepreneurs — the barangay officials and other local, on-the-ground people.

The president should give them more and real power and money. Let us solve our own problems here in our area in our own way. Give us the authority. Let us be our own social entrepreneurs.

edgardo

It’s great to have a president who’s a social entrepreneur. But, for this president to be more effective, local leaders or officials should have this kind of mindset also. The grassroots, just the same, should have this entrepreneurial spirit instead of the “dole-out” mentality. That perhaps would lead to a more prosperous Philippines.

Areana

that ideal president you guys are talking about never exist in Philippine soil. Correct me if I am wrong but the next president who we think fits the glove will turn out to be the same, corrupt, power hungry piece of jackass whose only concern is how to extort the Filipino people. Radiccal change is what we need.. But whose gonna start it? Maybe Bruce? maybe Edgardo? but after a few months in the office then the old corrupt spanish gene lurking in the Filipino system will kick that idealist fever… It’s time to run the country havoc.. Man!! First thing first. Lower the price of Rice..

Steve

Who’s your best bet for President in 2010?
I don’t have any…like the previous ones, can we say that we will just choose the lesser evil? Entrepreneur or not, can we run our country with no corruption? Unless we cure the disease, we’ll just tame bronchitis with cough syrup.

makapinoy

The filipino people is hard to govern by its nature due to:
Poverty run high to every family by 90 percent of the whole population.
Lack of education to grasp individual problems.
Corruption from top to bottom are basically the standard of happy living.
There are exploiters, manipulators and greed of money to these big companies and corporation around us.
Low salary of the working force to name a few.
Therefore the hazardous of governing the country is not intrinsically safe for progress. We need a president who is not a politician with integrity and honesty by his words and deeds.

Taranaaaaah

you have supported the edsa revolution 1 that brought down the Marcos gov’t. that could have helped your country advanced technologically in the whole world so stop whining.

themiddlefinger

your country could have been the most rich and advanced country, should you haven’t toppled down the Marcos gov’t.

Roderick Ybardolaza

Congratulations for a very relevant post. I agree with your view that a ’social enterpreneur’ is what we need most to finally bring progress to our country. Sad to say not one among our past presidents fitted this mould although as one of the commenters here said one came close to it. I have to concur that Marcos almost did it but just the same he failed. Among the current presidentiables, only one seems to qualify as a social enterpreneur. I won’t name him as I don’t one to sound like campaigning. It’s up to our readers to scrutinize their credentials.

Geraldine Kay Gomez

The Philippines as a social enterprise — what a wonderful thought. Unfortunately the Philippines is run under a system of patronage where those with the connections get the juicy positions in government. And who else propagates such a government system but the president and her cohorts, right?
We the voters also share the blame for such a system, considering that we are the ones who place these people into power. Only when we truly become wise voters will we be able to put into place a president who refuses to be bogged down by stumbling blocks due to his/her visionary stance. Unfortunately, noble people like these are relegated to the political backburner due to lack of logistics and the proper connections.
But heck, we can still dream, can we?

jose bonifacio

well i loved your ms terol but you forgot one thing.the voters and the dayafter of the election.there are very bright pinoys here and aboard who has a vision to make the country a first world but the trouble is the mentality of some sectors in our society.like for example the militants since the time of cory they never agreed on some good laws and policy proposed by the government they will always against on it.ok what if a very good dedicate pinoy became president who make good implementation on the country.after a year if something that the militants didn’t like they ask his or her resignation.its really a pain in the heart once a president made an unpopular proposal we ask for his or her resignation.its best if the policy is unfavorable why not improve it and help the government not to make rallies on the street.its very bad to image in other countries.

sukonasapinas

Another ideas, another failure!!

Sawa na ang mga Pilipinong nagbibigay ng karangalan at tulong sa atin bansang pinas. Apparently, all the ideas of good governance from past to present, failed and failing the people. All these qualities do not translate to a unified, good system of government.

Marinara

I like the idea, but I think, we need a President with iron fist but has the ability to control in a subtle way. The example of which is to let there be competitions in self sufficiency from the Barangays to the top most positions in the Government. LET US USE OUR OWN NATURAL RESOURCES AND NOT LET OTHER COUNTRY GET RICHER AND RICHER.

Eidge

While I subscribe to the idea of a social entrepreneur, the problem is with our current political system.

I believe democracy is NOT for impoverished and immature nations like us - a nation that only thinks about short term gains; a nation that votes based on emotional and shallow reasons and not on the objective principles.

In order for such a leader to achieve his visionary plans for our nation, he will need an iron fist. He will not only lead us to progress but more importantly, he will instill discipline in all of us to achieve what is best for all of us.

Sadly, what we need is an “enlightened” dictator. (Sadly because this is an almost impossible find.)

Rene Raymond R. Raneses, Jr.

“social entrepreneurs are able to link current gaps with current givens and future possibilities in ways that are extremely innovative, creative, “out of the universe” and yet very, very logical.”

—> but because they are entrepreneurs they cannot imagine the possibility of our society not being a capitalist, wage-earner society. or one where private ownership of property is not the basis of human dignity. or a society where we only participate in politics every other three or six years. or a society whose basis is not self-interest but rather the collective good. and because, yes, they are innovative, creative and very very logical, they are able to avoid being contested and challenged. God, social entrepreneurs are even better in avoiding accountability than dictators. at least, dictators have the force of the people to overthrow them. social entrepreneurs have the shining, shimmering, splendid glimmer of profit-while-helping-people to avoid being accountable. and yeah, not to mention, it’s all about the laws of the market - those invisible laws that are unaccountable to no one, well except, the invisible hand, at least as long as it’s ceteris paribus. but the thing is, things are never equal. by transforming political issues into market issues or cultural issues, the social entrepreneur, fool themselves and the public, that they are not exercising power, they are only feeling responsible for the inequalities the very system they are embedded in objectively generates. dig into the mud? why not recognize first one’s muddiness as well?

“Imagine this: If we could reinvent the Philippines using the social enterprise model, what would it look like?”

–> Nazi Germany perhaps? wasn’t Hitler a social entrepreneur? makes me sick even thinking about it.

Shania

I totally agree with your editorial and if I may say, the only presidentiable that reeeally fits the criteria is no other than BAYANI FERNANDO. However if Zobel de Ayala is only interested to run as President of the Philippines, (but I doubt it since he never showed any sign that he would) it would be a perfect match AYALA & FERNANDO for president and vice President respectively.

Len Simbulan

I think we have to change our mentality. We forget respect, we don’t follow our laws and we expect much to our goverment. Why not the goverment expect from you, do what is best for our country.

kennethross

I agree with you bro. What we need now is a president who has the mindset of a social entreprenuer. We also need to check the election process that we have right now. In reality, the politician who is elected are the rich or a good politician who is finance by rich poeple. When get elected he will serve his financer and not for the common good of the people. Majority of voters are ignorant that if they allow politician buy their vote they loss and will suffer for the next 6 years.

I think we need a social entreprenuer president with strong political party.

We need to continue educate our ignorant voters especially

We need to change in the election process.

We need to unite ourselves in order to get one voice to make our thoughts come into a realization.

chris luis

hi,

great article. can you pls give us background of your group?

how do we join you?

thanks.

Eterio Herrera

Here are some of my own suggestions of lo0king for an honest president, where the main problem of the philippines is and still Jueteng Activities, the reason for President Erap was usurped and convicted of Plunder, imagine the money involved its about 500 million pesos, which the funds is in limbo rock. this money can be used to run for an honest election dahil, walang hidden gastos walang utang na loob sa kaninuman but only to the election issue that he or she represents in this coming 2010 presidential election. the number one problem in the philippines is Poverty and the former Social Security head Dinky Soliman can really get the facts of tracing those poor people that can really affect the election outcome, i suppose it would be like the erap supporter where he has around 11 million pilipino people enough to win votes, just like what Senator Trillanes has done in winning his Senatorial contest, its safe because he is still in prision in Tanay, at hindi na magcampaigned sa mga daan at sulok sa pilipinas.

Gloria Kawatan

Yes, If we had a president like you said the Philippines well be one of the best country in the world. But, As always we only had a President who keep robbing the government coffer.

OFWmagnifier

Actually, you are correct. What you mentioned are well said.
But here’s another comment that we need for the next President.
1. He or She has vision and mission.
2. Proactive person not reactive.
3. Responsible and pro-poor
4. etc…there’s a lot of qualifications we need to make Philippines as 1st world nation not going to 4th world if there is.
Comments about Filipino Politicans:
1. Filipino politicians or Filipinos itself has already a disease flowing in the blood called it as “Corruption Cancer”.(bato-bato sa langit ang tamaan huwag po magagalit). But there are still few has a clean blood.

OFWmagnifier

The qualities of the current Filipino politicans are the ff;
1. They are narrow minded and they know only in traditional ways.
2. When they enter the politics they always have to think they can have a return of money they spend during the campaign.
3. They want to enter politics to protect their businesses.
4. They create Laws for their own good not for the whole nation and people.
5. They create create create create and create laws, bills, orders, but no implementations, explainations to all people of the nation and no follow up.
6. They have to create laws then later they to have to create another laws that counter act the previous not by enhancing existing laws.
7. They love to talk and talk and talk but no results.
8. They love and like to steal a money of the nation.
9. Where can you find in anywhere in this world that people in the BIR has a commission if they can collect a huge collection in an enterprise.
10. Filipino politicians specially in the top 4 positions in government has no experiences in running in a private or multinational private companies like CEO.
11. They have lack of procedural experiences, unsystematized way of running the office in any offices of the government.
12. They loves bribe.
13. Walang takot sa Dios.

Team RP

Hi!

For those who are interested to join Team RP, you can send an email to team.rp.official@gmail.com .

Thanks!

OFWmagnifier

for example like Singapore what they did of reducing or avoiding a corruption from top down to the lowest position of the government, they make the salaries higher almost up to the level of private companies so the people among the government officies has no corruption(they are paid up higher). Besides their laws has a teeth and dessiminated properly unlike in the Philippines is always portrait displayed in a museum.
So if you don’t go to museum you will not know that there is a portrait of “Michael Angelo” unless you study. But most of the people in the Philippines are not even finish their high school so literally how they know the laws, rules, republic act, executive order, senate bill, house bill, etc..that there is????? Actually, one thing that can make and change Philippines to turn into superb economy and 1st world country is, CHANGE THE MINDSET OF ALL FILIPINO PEOPLE and the DISCIPLINE.

Eidge

For us to have better chances of electing “more” competent leaders like you are saying, we must reform our political and electoral system.

Right now, what would work more for the Philippines is not democracy but meritocracy.

It’s a system wherein people are elected not because they have connections or have the popular surname, but because they have gained the skills, competence, experience and (above all) integrity needed to perform the function - just like in any enterprise.

We need a constitutional reform to restrict the qualifications of vital government positions only to the competent ones.

We also need to draft a stricter standards for the electoral process. Included in the stipulation is the weight of the vote.

It is my firm belief that we should not equate the votes of our people.
It’s like equating the vote of a father to the vote of his child on the need to go to school. What if the family is full of lazy children? You wouldn’t want to know the family’s decision anymore would you?

How much contribution one gives to any private or public enterprise should determine how much weight is put on his vote. For instance, how much money he brings for his company or how much tax one pays can be determinants.

I think meritocracy is one way we will have better chances of electing leaders who will discipline the irresponsible and corrupt ones to change; instill order in society; seek opportunities for the underprivileged and lead the nation to growth and prosperity.

I think your idea is okay, but it is not only for 1 President who can make the change. It will be up to us, Filipinos, who should act and improve our country. We should be disciplined and a team player.

I was just thinking, what if every establishment, school, offices etc. will act, will contribute, will do a voluntary service (eg. cleaning the roads, parks from garbage) at least 1 time per month, i think our country will improve.

So far, few groups are doing this kind of service. I hope many more will do the same.

Why have just ONE social entrepreneur? Why not have thousands, millions?

Let’s free up the country so that we can have thousands and millions of social entrepreneurs making this country great.

Remember, the job of president is an impossible job. NO ONE can run a country this big. No one can run an organization as big and centralized as the Philippine government. We should give up trying.

And please, stop mentioning Singapore. It is a rinky-dink little country with fewer people then Panay. If the Philippines was broken up into 180 Singapore-sized countries, then we can talk.

Kit for President

I would say a social entrepreneur-like president is NOT good for our country. Why?
Let us look what is the main objective of the entrepreneur; is to gain profit. Does it care for the well being of the workers? Well, theoretically they should BUT reality bites.
If were the President of this country I would have this kind of people to run on the economic side.
But I still need someone who can rule with an iron fist like Marcos or Saddam and he will be the Defense Minister.
I also need bright minded people to run the congress and the senate.
I need a visionary person with high intellectual capacity to work in the DOST.
I want people with moral and integrity to run the Justice system and the Ombudsman.
An honest man to run the BIR.
ANd the list would go on and on…

But what really is needed by our country to be great? a great leader or great individuals??

To answer this question let us ask the man in the mirror.

KISS PRINCIPLE SOLUTION TO PHILIPPINES NO. ONE PROBLEM WHICH IS POVERTY, FIRST SELECT AN UNCORRUPTED LEADER WHOSE ONLY WISH IS TO SERVE THE DESERVING POOR, ONE PERSON I CAN MENTIONED IS MRS REGINA PAZ GINA LOPEZ SHE HAS THE QUALITIES OF THE SAINT PIER GIORGIO FRASSATI(THE WORLD YOUTH PATRON SAINT) HE WAS SO RICH BUT OPTED TO HELP THE POOR IN WHICH HE CONTACTED POLIO AND DIED PAINFULLY IN HIS 24 YEARS IN THIS EARTH, HIS BODY IS MIRACULOUSLY PRESERVED SINCE 1925, AND THIS ISSUE WAS ONCED USE BY FPJ THE ACTOR WHO ALMOST BECAME THE 15TH PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES WHICH LEAD TO REALISM POLITICS OF THE WORLD.

Gloria AngKapalMo

Have you seen the movie V for Vendetta? It is a very good movie about political, chaos, terror, wild vision and new beginning.
The masked guy’s for me is a hero who tried to change everything. His plan is grand and consider himself a necessary evil for the betterment of the whole country. He sacrifized for a new beginning, new life, new system. Because the country’s political system in the movie is so corrupt that no matter what people do, elect new president, rotate politicians, swapping of leaders, they are all inside and working in the same rotten system. The counrty in the movie did a drastic move and it works, the people were so happy for the new beginning. Well it’s just a movie. Only in the movie things are possible, but who knows?

As for the social enterprise proposal, i would agree with that approach. Our leaders bragging, oh i studied in Harward (US), i used to be school mate with clinton and this and that, bla bla, bla bla, and in reality they way they still run the country and human rights violataions were as good as hell.

We need a president who did not come from politics. I think we need a president who is just a very ordinary and average person, (but not as dumb as erap, he could have passed the bill to make the english as the teaching language for all school), with giant vision to turn the country around. The one who did not come from either political party. Filipinos are notorous for kamag-anak or kakilala or kumpare. And it’s been part of the political system long before anyone could remember, that’s why it’s hard for those politician to avoid corruption “IT’S THE SYSTEM”. And we all deserved to overhaul the whole system, like an old and worn out engine, needs an overhaul, to be more useful again.

Socio Economic and Socio Political environs that breed prosperity are rooted in culture which in turn is rooted in the moral collective. Unfortunately, the countries moral collective is a wasteland.. it hides behind veiled and tired declarations of christian values emanating from all be it the righteous but desperately meek or the brutal oppressors..why? because talk is cheap. Though the theory is very old, tired and passe, but I believe we need a benevolent dictator to unshakle the country out of its moral dilemma..only then can social enterpreneurship thrive in a massive scale which could then replicate and thrive..then maybe the true christians..the living angels of God..our poor will have a chance to live a dignified life. Question is..who could be that benevolent dictator?

If you’re agast by my post, please read “From Third World to First” by Lee Kwan Yew…I could not think of a better manual for our countryman to read.

In these extremely trying times the world is in the midst of a paradigm shift and countries marginalized and unprepared will suffer unspeakable pains..unfortunately our beloved country is one of them….so rise up!! you righteous meek, find that benevolent dictator put him/her in power and be the conscience of the nation and hold back the ruling evil elite from derailing the change you deserve…then as JFK once said “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”…that would beat a path to sustainable social entrepreneurship and restore the Philippines to become a proud, prosperous and peaceful nation once again. God Speed.

Basta ako kay BF na galit ang mga masa dahil sa ayaw nila ng kayusan. They want anarchy in the sidewalks kaya ayun gusto nila kung saan nila nais mag tinda walang huhuli. Si Bf lang ang nagtratrabaho ng maayos at not doing papogi to garner votes. Actually his resolved in doing the best thing for us have only created enemies for him, kasi sa mentalidad natin di tayo sanay sa kaayusan. Nasanay tayo sa mga lagayan.
Kaya nga malakas appeal ni Erap sa mahihirap kasi all Erap wants is there votes. BF for president even in dreams because we never learn and continue to complain but in fact we were the ones who put those poeple in power we are always complaining. He he he

In the next election, let’s vote someone who is not known but excels in public service, someone who does not have “utang na loob” sa current politicians. Political will is something we expect from the next president and from us, tunay na pinoy at may tunay na malasakit sa kapwa pinoy. There’s no one else to blame if nagkandaleche-leche buhay natin dito sa pinas kasi we lack vigilance and political will. Sa mga kapwa ko pinoy,, we are talking about our life here…we only live once…at least we make it beautiful. I wanna grow old and die a happy pinoy.

It is a beautiful concept if the next President implement the so called social Enterprise. We have a lot of Presidentiables, namely: Sen. Mar Roxas, Sen. Manny Villar, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Sen. Loren Legarda, MMDA Czar Bayani Fernando, Mayor Lito Atienza and Mayor Jejomar Binay. Who do you think is the best and qualified canditate among these personalities that I mentioned?

Just pick only 1 personality.

I picked no other than the Mayor of Makati. Binay has alot of qualities to be the next President of the Philippines. I saw his performance from 1986 up to now. And people of Makati likes him.

What I think is, what he did in Makati, he can do it in the country. For me, he is a good chief executive!

Bayani Fernando is the man that fits all the requirements that will change the philippines. He loves the philippines and the filipino people. He has the political will to change the system. He has been tested and vindicated. Whatever he promised had been put into truition.
But we need to bind ourselves together to overcome the “roadblocks” that are ahead of us, if philippines is to be great again.
Roadblocks such as:
- vote buying that does evil to the country and yet tolerated by the masses. sikipan lang ninyo ang mga sikmura ninyo isang beses (during election time) at isipin ninyo ang kinabukasan nating lahat, tiyak boboto kayo kay BF.
- Election fraud should be guarded against.as the filipinos did with cory’s candidacy. the filipinos did it before and you can do it again.
- Learn from the past mistakes of letting the bahala na system of living. This is crippling your way of life.
BF has been my colleague since childhood, and I assure you that he always stands by his word and does what he plans to do.
Let us ask God to give our country a chance to change its course and change its heart in 2010.
Nasa diyos ang awa, nasa ating lahat ang gawa. Magpakatalino tayong lahat this time. All BF will do is multiply the Marikina that we love 100 times throught out the philippines.
Nasa inyo ang pasya; GAWA o NGAWA?
YOU HAVE THE CHOICE! ANARCHY OR DISCIPLINE? POVERTY OR PROGRESS?

Finally, what we need the most is a change of heart. From a deperate to hopeful; an arrogant to submissive; a depress to cheerful; a proud to humble; a selfish to selfless; and an evil to God- fearing hearts.

Thank God that there is still a BF in our midst. May God use him to take our country back to its rightful place in this our world.

Mabuhay ang mga pinoy, mabuhay ang pilipinas, mabuhay si BF our next president.

amor

i am 44 years old and have seen them all work and not work. And i have only seen Bayani Fernando walking the walk and talking the talk. The rest of them are all just plain politicians. I will vote for Bayani Fernando for president next term.

crisostomo_ibarra

I am voting for Bayani Fernando for Preseident of the Republic of the Philippines.

Just a response to Bruce in Illoilo.

What are you talking about a big country?..from what perspective are you seeing it as big. Also, the story that is Singapore can be replicated anywhere no matter what size. I would suggest taking some..better yet a LOT!! of time to educate yourself before posting so you can actually provide something of substance.

In reply to gooserider and as a comment to the post in discussion I would choose Mar Roxas as the one which befits the description of a social enterpreneur. To quote Ms Terol, that person must be as “enterpreneural,as passionate, as savvy,as creative and as progressive as our top social enterpreneurs.” Mar hails from a family of illustrious businessmen and politicians, the Aranetas and the Roxases. As DTI secretary, he pioneered and promoted business process outsourcing in our country. Today the call centers are employing hundreds of thousands and still growing. He cared for the poor by authoring the Cheap Medicine Act. I have no doubt that if he become President, our country will be propelled into the same league of progressive countries like Singapore, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and others. As to his public service record, he has never been linked to any corrupt practices which is one of the qualities that a good social enterpreneur must have.
