The name MINI in the automotive world is quite a paradox. It has such a short name but carries a long history and such a large following.

Introduced in 1959 by the British Motor Corporation (BMC), it was a product created out of necessity and ingenuity. In the mid to late 1950's, the Suez oil crisis made motoring with cars with big bodies and engines quite impractical.

As sales for large cars slumped, microcars like BMW's Isetta and Messerschimitt KR175's were becoming increasingly popular as fuel was being rationed. These cars were also called bubble cars, because of their bubble-like appearance. Leonard Lord of BMC didn't like the way these "bubble cars" were made so he had BMC produce a "proper" miniature car.

The first and original prototype was affectionately called "The Orange Box". The design was confined to a space of a 10 ft. x 4ft. x 4ft. box and its engine had to be an existing production engine. The distinctive two-door car was penned by Sir Alec Issigonis and was manufactured in several plants throughout its initial history. The new MINI however is exclusively produced in Oxford.


By Agence France-Presse SINGUR, India -- His voice shaking, security guard Sanjib Chowdhury says he fears opening the gate of the eastern Indian factory that is assembling what will be the world's cheapest car. Furious farmers and rights groups say the expropriation of land in West Bengal state for the plant was little more than theft and protesters are doing their best to throw a spanner in the works. "Villagers are threatening to kill us if we keep working at the site," he quakes through the iron gate of the project where the Nano, dubbed the "king of econoboxes" with its promised price tag of $2,500, is being made. "I didn't report for duty for two days, I was so scared," Chowdhury said at the factory in Singur in West Bengal, viewed by the state's Marxist government as a test case for drawing more big-scale industry to the impoverished region. The car -- which Tata chairman Ratan Tata conceived with the aim of getting Indians off their motorcycles and into safer cars -- was unveiled with huge fanfare early this year at India's premier automobile show in New Delhi. But since the sporty four-door, five-seater with its 623-cc engine was shown to the world to industry acclaim its ride has been anything but smooth. "Hardly a day goes by" without often violent protests by activists angered by the government's seizure of farmland for the project, said Chowdhury. The walls of the plant owned by Indian giant Tata, which earlier this year bought British motoring icons Jaguar and Land Rover, are plastered with warnings to workers to leave or "face the consequences." "Opposition parties and land owners protesting the land acquisition are threatening the workers not to report to duty," said senior police official Raj Kanojia, adding that security in the area had been tightened and police watch towers are being built. Standing near a factory shed, labourer Tapan Gayen said: "We're working under the shadow of fear. Work has almost come to halt." But despite the protests, Tata officials say the plant -- slated to produce 250,000 Nanos annually -- is nearly complete and insist the car will roll off the assembly line before year end. The head of the Singur Land Protection Committee protesters, Becharam Manna said, the group is "not against industry" and wants Tata to set up the factory in Singur. But the group is angered at how land for the factory was taken by the state government, and wants it to return 400 acres (161 hectares) of 997 acres seized from farmers who did not want compensation. Some farmers value their land "more than gold," he said, adding the money given was too little and they can't find other work. The farmers' protests have sparked a debate over whether farmland should be used for industry in India, where 60 percent of the more than 1.1 billion-plus population lives off agriculture. A showdown looms as the protest group, backed by the powerful regional Trinamool Congress party, aims to cut off the plant's power and water supplies starting August 24. So far, neither Tata nor the state government is budging. Tata Motors managing director Ravi Kant concedes the situation is "bad" but not so bad for the car company to exit, and insists the Nano will roll out from the Singur plant sometime in the October-December financial quarter. "We could have set up the plant anywhere. But we decided on West Bengal as we want this part of the country to see development," Kant told shareholders late last month. "Some elements are causing problems. But we're moving ahead," he said. Opposition to the plant is not the only problem Tata Motors faces. Global steel prices are at record highs, making it tougher than ever for the company to keep the Nano's base price at $2,500. Still, it is expected to hold the price at the announced $2,500 for the launch period at least as chairman Ratan Tata said, "a promise is a promise."

After seeing the purchasing power of my money getting weaker amid the rising pump prices that seem to have no end, costly automotive parts replacements and increasing maintenance cost, the perennial traffic problem of Metro Manila, I believe it’s about time I retire my aging car and switch to one that gives greater fuel economy, more creature comforts, environmental compliance, and plenty of available cup-holders. Car manufacturers who anticipate more increases in fuel cost but are also conscious of protecting the environment, have rolled out respective minis or compact cars. They range from the 0.8L Suzuki Alto and the Chery QQ to the 1.3L Toyota Vios/Avanza, Honda Jazz/City, and Nissan Sentra GX. In between, we also have the 1.0L Chevrolet Spark, plus the 1.1L Kia Picanto and the Hyundai Getz. Most cars run on petroleum products derived from oil, which is a non-renewable source of energy. Oil is formed by the compression and heating of ancient organic materials over time. The oil we use today was formed by the preserved remains of prehistoric planktons and algae over the past 200 million years (remains of prehistoric land-based plants and trees turn into coal). This is the reason why oil is called a fossil fuel. According to the report, "Crude Oil, Uncertainty About Future Oil Supply Makes It Important to Develop a Strategy for Addressing a Peak and Decline in Oil Production" by the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO), known world oil reserves is expected to be depleted by 2040. This could possibly lead to a global energy crisis if measures are not taken to find alternative energy sources. Crude oil is not just used to produce gasoline. It is also used as raw materials for a whole range of chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, solvents, fertilizers, pesticides, and yes, the ubiquitous plastics. Oil consumption is affected by several factors. The most important of all is a country’s economy. Developing countries like India and China could soon outpace the United States in terms of oil consumption due to rapid industrialization. At the rate of growth these countries are experiencing, the increased purchasing power of each country's citizens will not only mean more cars on the road, but also increased consumption of petroleum based products, which will fuel further demand for oil. The global supply of oil is partly controlled by OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). It can increase or decrease oil production as dictated by demands from the world market. Oil prices change constantly due to the balance between world supply and demand. Other factors affecting oil prices include wars and volatile political situations. With the rising demand and dwindling supply, we can only surmise that the almost weekly wave of fuel price increases we are experiencing is probably here to stay. Oil accounts for one-third of the world’s total energy needs with almost 80 percent being consumed in transportation. Even a few liters of gasoline saved by each motorist can go a long way in the conservation of this valuable resource. For this article, I won’t trouble you with all these talk about torques, “rpms,” horsepower, among others. I will also spare you the comparison of one car over the other. All these information are readily available in the web and online forums. As in my past articles, you will be virtually ‘transported’ inside each car located in idyllic locations and immersed in full, 360-degree interactive view of the interior -- all without the need to leave the comfort of your seat. Take note that the average fuel consumption (in kilometers per liter) was provided by the respective manufacturer or dealer, which came from tests conducted in controlled environments or from actual customer usage. A vehicle’s ‘mileage’ is influenced by many variables but load, tire condition, traffic situation, and personal driving habits affect the overall gasoline consumption. Several color variants of each model are also available for those who want to choose based on their distinctive taste. The ultimate test for these compact cars involves doing an actual test drive in a variety of road conditions. For now, however, you can just enjoy and imagine that you’re sitting inside this new compact car parked in very nice locations. Switching to a newer and smaller car can save you some gasoline money. But this decision also extends to a ‘greener’ movement. Advances in engine technology, such as Honda’s VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control), i-DSI (intelligent Dual and Sequential Ignition) and Toyota’s VVT-I (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence), aim to provide greater power output while maintaining small engine displacement and fuel efficiency. For us consumers, these developments mean more distance covered for the same amount of gas, cleaner combustion, which in turn, translates to lesser emission and pollutants. Sure there are hybrids and hydrogen fuel-cell powered cars already around. There is even a model that runs on compressed air. But until they mass produce these engines and make it more affordable to the general public, we might just have to make a more practical and logical choice by going compact.
