That Teri Hatcher 'remark'

| 111 Comments | 1 TrackBack
FILIPINOS, especially our kababayan physicians, in the US were insulted when an episode of the hit series "Desperate Housewives" depicted Philippine medical schools as producing substandard, inferior and worse inept medical practicioners. Actress Teri Hatcher delivered a line reacting to a diagnosis of an OB-Gyne specialist which her character disputed and mocked: "Did you go to a medical school in the Philippines?" I can't blame Teri for that controversial line, since she was just following the script. The producers and scriptwriters of the show should apologize for something they obviously don't know as fact. Philippine medical schools produce well-respected, world-renowned and even internationally-awarded doctors. While I can't describe doctors who finished medical school in the Philippines as really the best in the world, they are definitely not the bungling, looney, or inefficient professionals these Hollywood employees falsely perceive. But why allow such blatant misconception in the script of the show viewed by millions around the world? Creative license, the Americans always say. But someone should draw the line between fact and fiction. Such judgment of another country's abilities, in this case in the medical profession, should be bolstered by fact before they integrate it in an environment of fiction, such as a popular television show. If newspapers or broadcast news programs have consistently reported that doctors who finished medical school in the Philippines had caused the death, further injury, or ill-being of their patients, then it is right to make that "truthful" remark. But the scriptwriter has obviously his own presumptions, pre-judgment not only of Filipinos practicing medicine, but of the Philippines and its people in general. That's grossly unfair, let alone a major Hollywood television production allowing such injustice to proliferate. * * * If you're a SkyCable subscriber and you've gotten used to the no-holds-barred action of the WWE in Jack TV, the rib-tickling comedy in the late night talk shows "Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Night with Conan O' Brien" on ETC, and the dramas, current affairs and reality shows on "ETC Second Avenue," the NBA and coverage of other international basketball leagues on Basketball TV, and sports action on Solar Sports, well, brace yourselves for the cable guy to snatch that candy from you. Solar Entertainment channels will no longer air on SkyCable. This is part of the Lopez-owned pioneer cable TV firm's move to re-program its channel line-up due to "public demand." However, SkyCable will launch new channels that it said would more than make up for the lost channels. By late October or early November, SkyCable will launch five new exclusive channels--Velvet (general entertainment), Balls (sports), Maxxx (extreme action and sports), AXN Beyond (sci-fi, supernatural thrillers), Fox Crime (crime-related dramas, documentaries), and Kidsco (family entertainment). The programs on Solar, it said, can already be seen on free TV with the company's blocktime agreement with RPN-9.

You are abslutely right about that teri hatcher remark. I watched the episode online yesterday, & I was absolutely insulted.

there are far more filipino doctors who are a lot better than american med scholl gradates. My aunt was an ob-gyn/pedia in CA - she was the chief-of staff of the hospital she was working for in Delano, CA when she died in a vehicular accident. After her death, they renamed the hospital after her - you can search it out - Dr. Joy A. CArino-Kimpo.

The writer(s) owe us Filipinos an apology for such a blatant and shameless racist remark. I know a lot of people here in the US, myself included, who won't settle for anything less than the best medical care, and that means Filipino doctors and nurses.

As an American, I must say that this opinion (the remark) isn't widely held. I've always heard mostly positive comments about Filipino medical professionals.

Boo to Skycable!! What will I watch now??? I really hope they change their minds, or else I will have to change my cable provider.

i don't know if terri hatcher can reject a script or not, but the whole show was irresponsible

Please take some time to read about this petition and sign it. This is a definite insult to all Filipinos in general, and not just MD's, and something should be done about it:

http://www.petition online.com/ FilABC/petition. html

Thanks for your cooperation. Feel free to send to your friends so we can get full support of the Filipino people.

filipino doctors are one of the best doctors in the world because they can treat patients even without the help of new technologies, as the saying goes they do it "mano-mano" here. by doing everything manually is one the best training they undergo.

Stop commenting and start ACTING. All students and professionals in the medical field, in pinas and everywhere in the world...and all our kababayans, start sending emails to all the people you know and mention this insult.Ask the senate to do something about this! Ban all teri hatcher movies, do not support products she is endorsing, ban her from travelling to Philippines and DEMAND that that desperate show MUST have another episode where the life of the character of that teri woman got SAVED by a 'full-blooded -Philippine-educated DOCTOR.

I saw the episode on Sunday. I was a bit of a surprise but this one needs to be taken tongue in cheek. The joke is actually on Teri's character and Harvard University, if you watch the whole episode, the Docotr, who's supposed to be a Harvard grad failed to diagnose Teri's character as being pregnant, it's supposed to be a real simple routine checkup right?

I think Pinoys need to choose their battles wisely (this coming in the heels of the Nursing Board Scandal), I think that is hardly a racist retort. Last season's Chinese maid character was far worse and portrayed with so much Chinese steriotypes.

It's desperate houswives people! Desperate Houswives = Desperate Writing!

it was a joke, lighten up guys and gals. its not like she called us a bunch of retards. they make jokes of france, you don't see the french start up a revolution. in the previous season gaby (eva longoria) and carlos (her husband in the show) were in the middle of a divorce and carlos broke the window to get into the house. gaby called the police and said, "there's a man breaking into my house. please come armed, i think he's mexican." do you hear mexicans cry about it?

It's very hurtful. The best way to handle our detractors is to prove them wrong, that we are highly qualified through our work. We shouldn't give away our professionalism and calm...they're probably hoping to generate some noise from us to get the programme ratings or PR coverage up. Well, let's not fall for this kind of trap.

so anyway here we are, 13,000 and more of us complaining. does anybody know if the government or DECS or the medical schools in the Philippines are doing anything to protect our pride and race? Or are they all leaving it up to us petitioners? Someone in the petition suggested to stop all the dollar remittances until we get help from the Philippine government.

Indeed the scriptwriter owe us an apology for such a racist remark. Filipino doctors are much better than

Americans. Filipino medical practitioners abroad are well acknowledge by their employers, co-workers and even their patients for the medical care that they receive.

Maybe they based their comments on recent scandal in Nursing exam ( not doctors though still medical field)undermining the credibility of board passers.

I think I've read a familiar comment from a forum at the website and a comedian from an online comedy show. They (americans) has this impression that medical schools in the Philippines are very easy to earn a degree from. Na parang tambakan ng mga kano n hindi makapasa sa universities duon ang Pinas. If they view the Philippine medical education is so substandard, why do they depend on our medical professionals so much?

"Well, on the face, we can look at it as a racial slur. Masyado naman tayong minamalit, considering the number of our medical professionals in the US. The producers or script writers of the show, and ABC television network that carries it, owe us an apology in behalf of our Filipino MD professionals. Likewise, let us appealed to civil society groups and other Filipino organizations in the US to “call the attention” of the show producers, script writers, and Hatcher, to the “racial slur."

The fact that it is a long tedious journey to earn a medical degree, it is more prejudicial and insulting to ridicule the Philippine medical schools in particular. It would be better for Ms Hatcher to lecture her American counterparts not to choose our medical schools over theirs. The practice of medicine is 80% clinical which makes Filipino doctors at par with the techy savy ist world doctors.

I'm a doctor and I was insulted when I watched the clip. I stopped and became depressed for a moment. Then I remembered how I laughed when an episode of "Frasier" also made insulting remarks about medical graduates from Arruba and Granada. Which leads me to think, when is it okay to laugh at insulting remarks about others and then blow my head off when I myself am insulted?

the line was probably something that teri hatcher just had to say, as it was in the script. if there is someone who needs to hang for the deed, it would be the writers of "Desperate Housewives" Alexandra Cunningham and Marc Cherry. i say we boycott all shows written by them, and let them learn the error of their ways. Cherry should straighten up, gays can't be Republicans. How in hell did he become both?

Apology or no apology, simplest most effective thing to do against this type of show is to BOYCOTT it. Dont watch the show, and to some extent cancell subscription to channels (for cable) airing th show. And most of all dont patronize the products endorsed in the show. Remember the more we talk about it, the more popular it gets. Just BOYCOTT it.

,,,,,,

wow, my comment got deleted. apparently nobody here believes in free speech. we can't post something that is against what the blog is about.

oops, my bad ^_^

why didn't my comment come out earlier? i guess script error

RESEARCH AND INTERVIEWS - is all i can say to the producers, writers, actors and actresses of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, before you write stories and punch lines!!do you base your stories on real life, coz if that's the case you are very much mistaken about filipinos!! not because one person makes mistake doesn't mean everybody did it!! ,BUT, what can we expect from tv series like this?
i don't watch desperate housewives, coz I'M NOT THAT DESPERATE!!

just apologize. you should be educated enough to know that you did something wrong and apologize. what you did was not funny. to make this world a better place, we should know how to respect one another. and it is very unethical to say something like that to a nation who has been serving their country well.

I've watched the news on 24 oras. That was not Teri Hatcher's fault it was the scriptwriter to be blame. But that line was really annoying,as if their country does not need filipino medics? they should apologize!

much ado about nothing. teri hatcher's character is supposed to be ditzy. eva longoria's character makes anti-latino remarks and no one's up in arms. stop being oversensitive.

The writer not only insulted us Filipinos but also showed a highly contemptible and racist face hidden beneath the paper where the script was written that is worth wiping his /her stinking ass. The writer should know better that American doctors are not immaculate and spotless; that quite a number have committed misdiagnosis and mismanagement of cases.

i just wish when that writer or people behind the desperate hoousewives get sick and ran to the hospital all the medical employees on duty are filipinos and let them discover how good filipinos are, also the caring nature of us
that is why our service in medical field are most sought around the world.

Teri Hatcher studied math and engineering at De Anza College in Cupertino, California BUT dropped out after 2 1/2 years to join the TV show "The Love Boat" as a mermaid.

I guess she has not seen a college diploma in her life, that's why.

well if you analyze the line that Teri said "I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines." she is not attacking the profesionals itself she is pointing out the quality of the education

well, what can I say, this only shows that Americans are stupid...very stupid

It truly was an insulting and racist line considering that our locally-educated medical professionals are at par with the rest of the world.

What bothers me more is from where, or what prompted the writers single out Philippine med schools.

For DH viewers who know little about the Philippines, Teri Hatcher gave them quite an impression alright -- an impression that should challenge us Filipinos to always strive to be the best in our fields despite the odds and despite the discrimination.

I don't really watch much of this
Desperate Housewives. It is really
desperate.
Well at least most of us have a degree
What about them.
Most americans do not agree with this
"slur" in this particular episode.
My daughter is a nurse. Most of her
patients that she takes care, wish that my daughter is THEIR OWN DAUGHTER.
THat's how caring we Filipinos are.

I actually wrote an email to ABC about this. I hope they would do something about it. Aside from ABC, I wrote to Access Hollywood and if they find my article interesting enough, which indeed it is, they might air our concerns in the show. Access H is in NBC which is a rival of the other network.

BTW, I copied a portion of your article and included in mine as a quote. I like how you wrote your defense of our med schools =)

http://209.157.64.200/focus/f-news/1905887/posts hey guys this website is full of people leaving ceregatory remerks about pilipinos I thought everybody should know.

deregatory I mean

These American "illiterate desperate housewives" are really desperate illiterates. Imagine how they bacame ignorant in the show that medical profession is not easy to compare to
their body's gynaecology. She must try
abortionist which Americans are famous for.

The joke is intended to recto and quiapo fake diploma sellers -- not to filipino doctors.

People calm down a bit, Teri Hatcher was just delivering her lines the fault lies to the person behind who wrote the script. I was a film maker too. Actors and actresses had to base their lines on the script. Thus, we should search for the culprit. More remorse and grunts would exaggerate the whole situation. By the way it also contributes to the popularity of the show. Please, don't bark on the wrong tree!

Americans are high and mighty. No one does it any better than Americans. That's what the joke is all about!!!

this reminds me to what malu fernandez did to filipino overseas filipino workers....

just feeling the offensvie remarks made by "terri hatcher" and the show's script writer. what a complete disregard for the word "respect". hollywood people are not the right people to emulate in any ways, their lives are complete garbage. what goes in and out of their mouth are garbage. let's not waste our energy into glorifying them!

I can say that Teri should have said "NO" if she thinks that the line would insult other race so i think that this more than the writers & directors of the show, Teri is partly to be blamed off.

Let's just forget about this slur. Who's Teri Hatcher anyway? whoever she is, she is not important and I don't want to see her. If you even notice, president Bush is always insulted by these so called hollywood star every single day, and he is the most important person in this country. So...What's new?

This is the fault of ABC for letting this racial slur to be aired. As for Teri Hatcher, she should be sensible enough to protest this kind of language whether she is just acting or not. For those ABC executives and writers and Teri for that matter, pray that you won't need hospitalization; unfortunately for you bigots, Filipino medical practioners are found in almost all the hospitals in the US. As much as you hate it, you can't do anything but rely on these professionals to help you or go find yourself a quack doctor.

in my opinion, i don't find it derogatory in any way... DH is more of a comical portrayal of how some typical Americanas are. besides, we'ved heard in some shows critisizing mexican's as drug dealers, black americans as nigger and slaves, arabs as terrorists, and thai's as prostitutes. however, let this event serve as an eye opener to us Filipinos, especially those who are in power, to strive harder in uplifting the morale of OFW's through effective implementation of laws in protecting their rights wherever they may be and inherit the benefits that they should get upon retirement.

Funny isn't it? I was struck by a lightning when I read these remarks. I could remember how difficult it was to pass the exams and the sleepless nights we spent on our duties in the hospitals taking care of our patients. It may not because we are in a developing country, our medical education is lousy. We used the same books that the US med schools are using. We have the same mental capabilities as the Americans or caucasians. I am just sorry for the writers of DH for they are very desperate and ignorant. No wonder why I do not have the urge of watching such silly television series. My disposition is still strong for I know what it takes to be a Filipino doctor. We give all our best for the welfare of our patients.
