Controversial celebrity Gretchen Barretto is in the news again.
She is being mentioned in show biz talk shows and news reports over an alleged incident said to have happened in early June in which her credit card was declined in a posh restaurant located in a Makati five-star hotel. As she presented her credit card to pay the bill for her dinner with Ruffa Gutierrez, Pops Fernandez and a non-showbiz friend named Josie, Gretchen was informed that the bank had declined the card.
According to the reports, Gretchen had answered back to the waiter, “That cannot be, we own the bank.” The cashier then tried several times to get the bank’s approval but failed. Ruffa instead paid the P4,000++ bill in cash. Reports also said that Gretchen’s long-time partner, businessman Tony Boy Cojuangco had rushed to the scene and tried to settle the problem. But, the reports added, the couple ended up quarreling over the incident.
As a result of the controversy, Gretchen told entertainment columnist Ricky Lo that she was seriously considering leaving the country for good.
In an exclusive interview with Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) on Thursday, Gretchen’s manager Boy Abunda confirmed that the incident did happen but clarified that the card was not declined because the transaction exceeded the credit limit or it was due to deactivation. Abunda said the whole brouhaha was a result of a hardware malfunction of the restaurant’s card reader. The machine’s magnetic stripe reader was not able to read Gretchen’s card, he said.
Boy also clarified that Gretchen was not leaving the country because of the incident. He clarified it was the couple’s plan even before to accompany their daughter Dominique in her studies abroad. Gretchen and Tony Boy’s relationship remained strong, Boy said.
Boy did not confirm or deny Gretchen’s “we own the bank” remarks to the waiter and the argument between Gretchen and Tony Boy. He also could not determine why Gretchen did not attend Ruffa’s recent birthday party or confirm that her no-show was a result of the incident. But, he said Gretchen and Ruffa were already on speaking terms.
He also said he was “not privy” to an alleged incident wherein Gretchen had fumed at PEP and YES! Magazine Editor-in-chief Jo-Ann Maglipon for breaking the story on the online portal.
Boy was also asked if it was indeed Ruffa’s personal assistant who leaked the incident to the press. Boy said it was “immaterial”. He revealed Gretchen is using the credit card again,

anent the credit card incident, although i find the demeanor of gretchen quite humbug, i must admit it really happens… iv been declined a couple of times at several pizza huts for lame bills not exceeding a thousand! And i hold a gold card which would subsequently allow me to purchase in other establishments with amounts over 5000! tsk tsk..it’s bad when this happens, but it should be rectified when you have cash to pay instead. too bad gretch didnt have any!

I find the incident funny. For an “upscale” restaurant to not have a backup method of accepting cc payments is ridiculous. Imagine all the other customers paying cash. If the machine malfunctioned, the merchant can go back to the “old” way of making an impression of the card. Then, the card holder signs the paper.
More likely, the card was over its limit or was closed.

Filipino like us in abroad are very pissed off by the statements by these two fools blaming the machine for refusing the card. In this situation all they need to do is call the credit card company to request for an authorization for the purchase and at the same time the bank can tell the card holder why it si being refused. This is a factual info and all retailers know this procedures. Why don’t you ask Tonyboy? she said they own the bank. My card was declined a couple of days ago at Jewelmer. Same thing, the machine would not read my card. The assistant at Jewelmer called the hotline - which can be called 24 hours, Monday to Sunday - and gave the details of my card and my purchase. Voila! It was approved. It seems there was a problem with the stripe reader of the machine.
Now it seems silly to me that a five star hotel like Dusit with the current hot restaurant, Umu would not go out of its way to do such a standard practice for anyone especially someone as popular as Gretchen B.
If this is what happened, then at the very least there should be a public apology from the hotel and the restaurant to La Greta because of the all the negative publicity that this incident with her credit card seems to be generating.
Now, it makes me wonder why the hotel is not saying anything? Huh? Could it be that wonder of wonders, even the significant other of the owner of the bank does not pay her credit card bill?
Tsk tsk tsk. Oh by the way, my earrings in Jewelmer cost me PhP20,000 and my credit card did not even flinch with that amount.
I guess thats cause I PAY FOR MY OWN BILL. I do not expect someone else to pay it for me!

And if there the credit limit is used up they can give consideration especially she (Gretchen) claimed that they “owned” the bank …
Given the terminal is busted or “malfunction” they can swiped it to other terminal or they can call for manual approval.

appreciates the honesty of boy abunda about the card issue - but it sounded like half-truth when he said it was the fault of the swipe machine. it’s hard to believe that a prestigious hotel would only have one card machine. and wouldn’t the hotel staff inform gretchen that a possible reason her card had been rejected was due to machine fault? - but this was never brought up. and besides they can always do manual approval of the credit card transaction if there’s really a fault in the machine or if the bank’s offline. in other words, there might be some truth to earlier report that the credit card was declined because it was cut off.

If so? Please note that ALL MERCHANTS (establishments that offer Credit Card as payment) are trained on what to do in case a problem would occur, of which I have experience this before:
1. Manually enter the card number in the card electronic machine OR
2. Call the Credit Card hotline to get an authorization and plantsahin ang card sa card slip.

a well to do person would normally have 2 to 3 credit cards. but not Gretchen
if you are the principal card holder, then you would have complete access of the credit limit and would know the card status, but not Gretchen
tony boy rushing to the scene means Gretchen already smelled something, maybe she feels being eased out.
granting (but not accepting) that they (the surname) owns the bank, still protocol bet merchants and banks has to be followed. any transaction has to be authorized and documented by an approval code.
just to show how fragile her connection to Tony boy. . . any time the carpet can be pulled out and that’s it . . .

boy abunda should stop trying to explain the reason for gretchen’s credit card problem. his explanation is stupid and it’s his brain that’s malfunctioning, not the machine. if a credit card cannot be read because of problems with its magnetic strip, the machine would return a ‘card read’ error message; but then the card number could be entered manually. A message of credit declined or not authorized means exactly that.

it is very un-usual that the machine malfunction when it was Gretchen’s card. If i am Tony, I will get rid of her. She only give him headache. I wonder if Gretchen is still Gretchen if she is out of Ton’y shadow.
