TV host-comedian Joey de Leon surprised viewers of his weekly talk show, “Startalk,” when he made one dare after another as he fumed over a report published in the tabloid Balita that his noontime variety program for 29 years, “Eat Bulaga,” was a flop in its recent US show.
In his article, “Bakit Nag-Flop ang Eat Bulaga sa US?” published on July 29, Balita entertainment editor Dindo Balares claimed a GMA-7 executive, whom he did not name, confirmed the show was indeed a flop. However, if one thoroughly reads the article, the author merely referred to second-hand sources in his statements and that he did not witness the event himself in Los Angeles, California.
The taped “Eat Bulaga” US show, billed “Eat Bulaga Grand Fiesta sa US”, which was aired last Saturday on GMA-7 apparently wasn’t a flop. Footage of the show revealed the venue, the LA Sports Arena, was jampacked. Even a California state senator, Leland Yee, was shown on stage declaring July 19, the day of the US presentation, as “Eat Bulaga” day.
This blog writer however is inviting anyone who attended that particular show to comment and give their own crowd estimates.
Because of what was apparently a false report, Joey fumed and called Dindo a liar. He then urged Dindo to come clean and name the GMA-7 executive who confirmed the seeming falsehood.
“Mapapatawad ko lahat yon na sabihing pangit ang show niyo. For 29 years, sukang-suka na ako sa ‘Eat Bulaga,’ okay lang, personal na opinion niyo yan at nangyayari pa yan. Pero sa isang event na tapos na, binaligtad mo, nagsinungaling, galit ako sa mga sinungaling. Dalawa lang naman ang kinagagalitan ko dito eh, ang sinungaling at mandaraya,” Joey told his “Startalk” co-hosts Butch Francisco and Lolit Solis in the live interview last Saturday.
If Dindo could name the GMA-7 executive, Joey said he would forget Dindo’s “transgressions” and even offer him a once-in-a-lifetime gift.
“Hinahamon kita. Bibigyan kita ng ticket sa eroplano papuntang Estados Unidos, first class o business class for two para makasama mo ang dyowa mo. Isang linggong stay sa kahit anong hotel sa Amerika, sagot ko with pocket money na $5000. Sabihin mo lang sa akin kung sino ang GMA executive (na yon),” Joey added.
The biggest surprise came when Joey turned the tables on GMA-7, which he said regularly invites Dindo to its press conferences and functions.
“May nag-kumpirma sa akin na uma-attend ka sa mga presscon dito sa GMA. Eto ang hamon ko pati sa GMA. Pag inimbita niyo uli ang taong yan, mag-re-resign ako sa lahat ng shows ko sa GMA.” Joey emphasized.
Joey previously resigned as entertainment columnist of the Manila Bulletin, Balita’s sister publication, over Dindo’s article.
As of this posting, Dindo remained silent over Joey’s charges.

I applaud your guts to elevate journalism by reporting verified infos/articles that is degradingly dragging down the industry as a direct result of irresponsible journalism for the sake of the whims of whatever writing purposes. Joey’s recent and previous behaviour is obviously that of person who’s getting older and suffering from hypertension. He can’t take critisms anymore. He obviously enjoys making fun at others but not on himself. Ever wonder why in his shows’s gags he is always just the “moderator” and never a participant? Sa madaling salita, Joey is “PIKON”. He is a very talented person but he must learn to accept the reality that he’s not perfect. Joey you have the best sense of humor in your industry but be sport enough to accept that you are not the only one. You maybe making more money by being like that but it’s taking away precious moments of peace from within you..and you are not getting younger.

If i were the NPC and the other organizations of press people, i would demand more than a public apology. By justifying in Startalk that it was meant to be a joke, then he really was irresponsible. Kung di nagreact ang mga principled and dignified press people, he will not realize how insensitive his joke was. Yun lng nga nababayarang press at mga duwag kay JDL ang di nagreact.

I grew up watching everyday the Eat Bulaga show at iba pang shows nila(iskul bukol…todas atbp) masasabi kong isa si Joey sa gifted na tao dahil s napakatalented nya. tumatawa ako pag tumatawa sya at umiiyak ako pag umiiyak din sya katulad din kung sya ay galit ganun din ako. The fact that the one who commented; that the EB show was a flop comes from a Kapuso GMA exect is outrageous. And JDL is just reacting on the issue. Mr. JDL is a natural entertainer humurous and yet witty. Hindi siya magtatagal ng almost 3 decades sa isang noon time show kung hindi siya effective entertainer. Walang personalan. everybody here that posted a comment doesnt really know what really happened. Joe de leon i think made the right move of calling out that guy and GMA. If its a flop in the US then so be it, still these 2 shows makes a lot of filipino’s happy. If Joey’s show is being attact then he has the right to say something esp. if there is no basis. its obvious that they are just #2, if not then he would not dare say these things. Eat Bulaga has been with GMA for a long time and they both need each other. Controvercy is a part of our culture and thats why our economy is still a mess. If everybody could be like somebody who has principles and who stand in what he believes in then maybe we could be a better country. But thats not the reality, most of the people there wont change because is a dog eat dog place.

joey is a principled person. he is his own man. the problem with the media in PI to much press freedom. and we can count media people who are NOT receiving grease money. media people can malign anybody for a FEE, that’s the fact of life. rarely, you read a balance news in PI where both parties are interviewed it’s normally a one sided news. once published and the reputation of the mentioned person has been tarnished that’s the time they’ll get the side of the accused. Pity, isn’t it! but that’s how MOST of the media people in PI works.

I watched the Eat Bulaga L.A. show and I would say it was a dream come true watching them in person. I don’t know why someone would write something that is not true at all. Eat Bulaga was really successful in its L. A. show. I can attest to that because I was there.
I am hoping that Eat Bulaga will also have a show in San Diego CA.

Eat Bulaga is very entertaining and for the past 29 years, I have been following their show. I grew up with Eat Bulaga from my college days until now that i am a grandmother. No one can beat the way they host a show. They are very professional even if you see all of them joking with each others, like playing and you feel that everyone is having a good time. Every day for me is not complete without Eat Bulaga. Joey is so full of humor and wit that if you can’t catch up with him, you are lost. He has a way with jokes that only Joey can deliver. Match that with Vic’s charisma, their tandem is really a blast.
I look forward to watching them until I die. MORE POWER TO EAT BULAGA!

I really don’t like noontime shows… ke wo wowee o eat bulaga. Eat bulaga… nakakasuka na nga. Wawaweee… nakakasuka na… nakakainis pa.
But the issue here should not be the arrogance of Joey de Leon (even though he is). This is about an article on which Joey reacted upon. Halata naman kasi na ang tinitira ninyo si Joey de Leon pag ang issue ng arrogance ang binabanat ninyo. Pero kung sana sinabi ninyo ay “sana mag file na lang si Joey de Leon ng case against this guy”… para naman makita ang objectivity ng hirit ng mga ayaw kay Joey.
I’m fed up with these trash talk. IMHO, Joey should channel these issues in the proper venue. Puro basura na nga sa kalye… basura pa rin ang laman ng television. Who the hell cares whether Eat Bulaga has flopped or not?

Joey de Leon is an icon in the entertainment and the movie industry. I saw the Eat Bulaga LA Episode in question. I have no doubt at all, it was a success.
I dont believe, a GMA Executive will say it was a flop, since “Eat Bulaga” is a regular show at GMA7. It will be stupid of a GMA7 Executive to say that to the Press, critizing its own shows. This is commonsense.
Freedom to write is not absolute. A writer should have responsibility to make sure that what we writes are factual.
We support Joey de Leon’s complaints. He is right.

Instead of waiting for Joey to resign , GMA 7 mgt. should ask for his resignation pronto. What he uttered in Eat Bulaga,( ang lola ko pumapatay ng press) is unforgivable. The guy is only making a living and showing what he really is. Don’t look down on willie cause what is important is he is making people happy. My sister who has just been operated due to breast cancer looks forward to watching wowowie everyday cause it makes her happy and forget her pain.

Nag dare lang naman si Joey de Leon. Kung totoo nga na may nag sabi na Executive ng GMA na flop ang Eat Bulaga sa USA, writer should reveal it. Atleast magkakapunta na sya sa America, magkakapera pa at higit sa lahat malalaman natin kung sino ang nagsasabi ng totoo. Dyan ako bilib kay Mr de Leon, pag sinabi nya pinangangatawanan nya at sigurado sya. Di tulad ng ibang writer, makasulat lang kahit walang basis. i watched the show as i was given a free ticket. not too many people. maybe 3000. i watched a filipino show last december in the same venue and the crowd was maybe 5 times larger. the floor was full because they allowed people who bought gallery tickets to move down. it was pretty boring and people left in the middle of the show because tito, vic, and joey never really hosted the show. they opened it and never came back. compared to other filipino shows this is definitely a flop.

What gives Joey? Why the fuzz over a real flop of a show from the stand point of your employer. EB brought the whole cast plus some Juday & Ryan expecting to draw a sellout arena. Alas, even us TV watchers noticed that the cameras did not pan the upper sides of the arena. Too, judging from the energy you guys showcased, it’s apparent you were disappointed of the turnout. Don’t beat yourself hard Joey, you yourself admitted GMA7 is way behind ABS in the global aspect of providing TV fare. Work on that for your beloved network to catch up. You can’t win all the time. weve watched eat bulaga in LA,we travelled far from Boston because we like bossing, jose and wally theyre the only people who carried the show to be lively the rest history.its frustrating for us because when we were in LA sports the show started late and people keep moving aorund dahil naiinip na,no front act either at its a surprised knowing na mas maraming pilipino sa LA pero konti lang ang audience at yung mga tao nakikita sa tv last saturday thats mostly sa front area lang..halos wala kang maintindihan sa nangyayari sa stage dahil its unorganize at super boring pa matutulog ka,yung mga host sa stage parang sila sila lang ang naguusap and you will be guessing what theyre doing…even when they tried to encourage people to participate,audience didnt bother coz u cant understand them…ang inabangan lang yata ng mga tao doon yung guest nila medyo nagkabuhay paglabas nina judy ann at ryan dingdong and marianne, after that people left the arena isa na kami doon even they still have some games….in comparison sa wowowee, we also travel how many hours to NJ because we like POKWAng and kristine…the actual show started late too but not as late sa eat bulaga, but the difference is they have front acts and its fun….sa umpisa palang you can feel that people go crazy and its fun kasi ang haba ng pila at ang daming tao…nakakagulat nga dahil its like a reunion doon sa iba na ilang bus pala sila magkakasama just to watch wowowee…..and people stayed until the very last end of the show…i like eat bulaga lalo na sa part ni vic and jose but nasisira lang ang mood namin when joey talks na you cannot understand kung ano ang pinagsasabi out of nowhere…minsan si willie bastos din pero mas bastos si joey at walang preno sa comments and his jokes are too much….

I never miss wacthing eat bulaga everyday. Here in bahrain, GMA Pinoy tv is showing eat bulaga 3 times a day, morning(live), afternoon and night. I’d seen there US show recently and it was entertaing. Joey has a valid point raising this issue. Reporter needs to verify their news before being published. Long live EB.

What do you mean by people who watched Eat Bulaga has high IQ, eh di mostly low IQ ang people sa Phils. because nationwide ratings panalo ang Wowowee, I think it’s the other way around, ang Eat Bulaga is so boring, unlike Wowowee from start to finish ang saya saya and the fact na lahat ng contestant na sumasali dito kept saying na dream nilang makasali dito, sa hirap ng buhay sa Phils. I can’t blame them if they cry once they become contestant of Wowowee. I really don’t understand why ang taas ng ratings ng Eat Bulaga sa Metro Manila, baka naman totoo na dinadaya or siguro totoo din na biniboycott nila ang channel 2 because ABS owns Meralco. Para sa akin ang Wowowee lang ang show ever na had touches so many lives, kaya nga kaming TFC subscribers always support them because ang dami nilang natutulungang mga kababayan nating sobrang hirap. Eh ang Eat Bulaga sa dami ng host na I believe na they don’t need, because accept it most of the hosts are laos, esp Joey de Leon na sobrang yabang, walang ginawa kundi siraan ang Wowowee, like this controversy na flop ang Eat Bulaga, bakit kailangang isali nya ang Wowowee eh wala namang kinalaman ang Wowowee don. I have a relative from LA who watched the show and she said hindi raw talaga napuno ang venue, actually libre lang yong ticket kasi namigay daw talaga para lang mapuno yung venue, pero sad to say namigay na ng tickets hindi pa rin napuno, she also told me na kaya lang sya nanood because of Judy Ann and I’d like to remind you Joey na si Judy Ann ang nagdala ng show nyo kasi I heard after her number marami ng nagsiuwian. Accept it Mr. Joey De Leon na hindi nyo pa rin kayang pataubin ang Wowowee sa Amerika, also yung sinasabi mung prayer meeting, baka prayer meeting like El Shadia na sobrang dami ng tao. Yung mga kanguso na nagsasabing dapat idinemanda na lang ni Joey yung writer na kasong libel may tanong ako. Bakit nung si Piolo at Sam ang nag demanda ng kaso kay Lolit Solit ng Libel eh kung ano anong pinagsasabi nyo sa dalawa? It’s true na GMA 7 ang number one sa pinas.. that is a fact.. pero it is also a fact na ABS ang number one sa ibang bansa.
Kahit sinong foreigner ang makapanood ng EB at wowowee, they all say that wowowee is more entertaining. Pati yung mga shows ng ABS ay mas entertaining kesa sa GMA. Although maraming magaling na artista sa GMA, yung mga supporting actors nila ay di magagaling umarte at parang generic ang mga shows nila. As for EB naman, I only like Vic Sotto sa mga hosts. Sya lang ang may class and integerity, and he is a decent man. As for Joey, he is just another loudmouth hypocrite

Maganda at napatunayan mo na di tunay na flop ang show nyo sa LA. Yung pagresign mo sa Mla. Bulletin ipinakita mo na may word of honor ka at sana gayahin ka ng mga politicians na nadadawit sa mga alegasyon. Pero bro tigilan mo na pagbabanta mo na magreresign ka sa GMA7 para lang lumalabas na nagiging childish ka o baka naman pinipirata ka na rin ng dos para wala ng manira sa kanila hahaha. Saka instead na bigyan mo ng pabuya si Dindo Balares ibigay mo na lang yung pera sa fans mo na mahihirap mas marami pa ang matutuwa sa iyo. Yun ang dahilan kung bakit maraming masa na dating fans ng Eat Bulaga ang lumipat sa Wowowee.

I also watched it on TV, marami nga nanuod pero I think it has been edited. I’m not saying its a flop either. Its just that pinatulan lang ni Joey De Leon yung issue that made him resign in Bulletin. But sa tagal nya sa showbiz he should have acted manly enough na wag naman gawing miserable ang buhay nung tabloid writer. Sa totoo lang, I admire Mr. Joey de Leon sa katapangan nya..khit sabihn pang idaan sa joke mga ganong bagay. Kung sa pagpapatawa din lang sa Eat Bulaga sulit na. Yon ang importanteng sangkap sa pagkain sa pananghalian na tatawa ka, hahalakhak kahit wlang ulam je je je! Matalino si Mr. Joey kaya nga pinagkakatiwalaan syang humawak ng maraming shows db.
At tama lang naman na ipoint out nila mga writers who really are aftering money para lang makapagsulat. Dapat yong totoo at walang siraan. Napakaliit ng mundo para siraan ang isang show na syang nagbibigay ng saya sa buong Pilipinas at ngayon sa ibang bansa na. Ang GMA7 naguumpisa pa lang sumahimpapawid sa ibang bansa, pero makikita mo na agad response ng mga kababayan nating hanap ay saya at di lang puro pera. Ang hirap kasi sa ating mga pilipino e, kung ano ang narinig dinadagdagan, at kung ano ang hindi nakita e ipinamamalita….tsk tsk tsk…

you cannot put down a program just for a report as like this, people who watch Eat Bulaga, has high IQ that’s why they watch the program.
For sure, people like Joey, an intelligent as very obvious, they want to put him and his program down. Come to think of it, in other programs of Joey de Leon, it runs long in the network. They are just JEALOUS to my idol.

yes kasi may mga tao na very updated sa mga hear-say lang and never confirmed the details,facts or opinion lang ng ibang di naman talga nasa event or scene. kailan ba tayo natutong mag husga without knowing what really happened.
Eat Bulaga is in the world of entertainment giving people a time to laugh, to inform and forgetting alll the problem just for a while di bah!!!
Dapat nga ay maging maplad pa tayo ay mga kababayantayo ng handang maging ng kasiyahan sa malayong lugar na puro trabaho at pera ang iniisip para sa kaginhawahan ng ating mga pamilya, kaibigan at kapuso at kaaakbay.

I warched the Eat Bulaga Grand Fiseta. Everybody wa happy. It was very memorable and we had lots of fun. I can say that it was very successful. Ikaw ba naman pumila nang pagkahaba huh nakakapagod din.
For those who were not able to watch the Eat Bulaga show in L.A. and for those who are not from U.S. and made comments that it was flop, LIAR. i would also like to challenge the tabloid columnist to come out in the open. If Joey offered you fare and accommodation, kami dito sa L.A. mag tour sa yo. Just tell the truth.

Maging lesson sa mga writer yan na kung magsusulat sila ng article dapat with basis and factual talaga at hindi second information. Kung may information sila natanggap dapat klaruhin muna nila.

I watched the show last Saturday. Obviously, the audience shots were noticeably edited. Duon lang sa mataong areas lang nakafocus ang camera.
The show was not a flop, although it was not a “sold out” event either. There have been reports that tickets were being given away for free in order to increase the crowd in the venue.
For a long-running noontime show, Eat Bulaga should have filled up the stadium with more than 6,000 (as reported). I guess that’s where this issue started. Hindi na talaga malakas ang hatak ng show.

Kung sino man yang unknown Dindo na yan, magpahinog na lang sya dahil lalo mo lang pinapababa ang estado ng mga media people. Ikaw at ang mga pares mong bayaran (obviously, ano pa ba motibo mo para manira?) ang nakakadungis at nakakasira sa pilipinas. Kung merong clean, pure entertainment sa noontime show, wala nang iba kundi Eat Bulaga yun noh! Go, Joey and the entire GMA staff… puwede, wag nyo na haluan ng ganyang tao (dindo who?) ang mga presscon nyo?! More power to Eat Bulaga!

integrity, specially for writters is very much needed. Joey’s action may be harsh to some but sometimes, that kind of action is needed to waken up the morals of people. we should be responsible in every thing we do and say. a lie will forever be a lie. every wrong doing has a consequence.

Pinanood namin ng family ko ang eat bulaga concert sa California….It was a big hit!…Galing pa kami ng Washington state… So kung sino man yung “reliable” source ni Dindo, siguro isa siya sa mga umistambay sa labas at di talaga nanood, yung masabi lang na pumunta siya sa venue….LOL…

It was really a flop. I’m sorry to say na nakakasuka na nga ang eat bulaga. Tinigil ko na rin yung subscription sa Orbit, tatlong beses inuulit ang mga palabas, lalo tuloy ako nagsuka. Buti na lang may ibang english channel kundi walang pakinabang.

Nung sabihin ni Joey de Leon na galit siya sa mga sinungaling at mandaraya, di kaya nya naisip na kaharap nya si Lolit Solis, na di pa natatagalan ay walang nagawa kundi iretract yong sinulat nya tungkol kay Sam at Piolo, at syempre pa yong Manila filmfest scandal na si Lolit din ang utak.
Palagay ko mas madami pang mas makabuluhang bagay ang dapt pagtuunan ng mga taong ito. Nagresign na sya sa Manila Bulletin, at nagbanta pa sya na magreresign kapag inimbitahan ng GMA ang nasabing writer sa kanilang presscon. Helloooo, Mr Joey, I think you’re acting as if you are indespensable dyan sa GMA. You must know that GMA will go on even without you kaya wag ka magbanta na magreresign. Act like a matured man bro.

What Dindo wrote is constructive analysis and not at all written to malign the reputation of Eat Bulaga. It is so arrogant of Joey to include Manila Bulletin and GMA with his dislike of what was written about his show. He has his own column in MB and Eat Bulaga to defend himself and yet he is too full of himself and feel that he is powerful enough to dictate GMA 7 what has to be done regarding the issue. If Philstar / PSN will accept him as a writer, then they will lose my support as well as my friends and family.

I watched it on TV, obviously maraming nanood ng Eat Bulaga sa US. As in masayang masaya ung mga tao especially with the presence of Marian and DIngdong. This certain Dindo Balares is not credible, baka gusto sumikat or mapansin or baka naman kaya nabayaran. Eat Bulaga kaya yan, dito nga sa UAE kahit magkasunod lng ung visit nila talagang sold out ung ticket. Orbit subscriber nga kami pero wala na tiket na mabili.Besides, ang mga Pilipino sa ibang bansa sabik sa mga ganitong shows. So I agree with Joey, sinungaling itong writer na ito. Basta we like Eat Bulaga, we like Joey kc sobrang intelligent nya, when u watch “taktak mo or tatakbo” marami kang mapupulot sa kanya, sa kahit na pinkasimpleng tanong, nakaka-amuse tlaga sya. Go Joey, your brilliant man!
