Two well-known TV personalities, Kris Aquino and Chris Tiu, graced separate Inquirer Read-Along sessions inspiring hundreds of children to develop good reading habits.
Known for their impressive spiels while hosting their top-rating television programs, Kris and Chris led the storytelling that provided the kids helpful pointers in life while emphasizing the importance of reading in their young lives.
Kris, who currently hosts the ABS-CBN programs “Boy and Kris,” “The Buzz” and “Kapamilya Deal or No Deal,” owes most of her accomplishments to good reading habits she nurtured since she was a child. Her father, the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr., regularly bought books for her while they lived in exile in Boston, Massachusetts when she was nine years old. Kris continues this habit to this day, with a new book to read each week despite her busy schedule.
During her session with famed storyteller and ex-Batibot regular Bodgie Pascua, Kris called some of the children to read along with her a story about a child ashamed of her mother being a tricycle driver. After the read-along session, she emphasized the important lessons the story wants to convey—love of family and giving value and respect to the means of livelihood each member pursues.
“It is important that you also understand what you read,” Kris says. She also reminded them not to take reading for granted, even if they continue to watch TV.
“Pag kasi sinabi kong magbasa lang kayo, mawawalan naman ako ng trabaho,” Kris says in jest.
Meanwhile, Chris told his young audience in his read-along session the importance of reading for a topnotch athlete like him.
Chris, who is also host of GMA 7’s “Pinoy Records” and “Ripley’s Believe It or Not,” says reading broadens his awareness and keeps him up to date. “Everyday, I read newspapers, sometimes magazines (to keep me informed),” he says. He is also a bookworm not picky on the genre—be it suspense, action, inspirational, or even humor. He reveals reading at least two hours a day despite his lengthy and strenuous TV show tapings and basketball team practices.
This popular Ateneo varsity standout, who led the Blue Eagles to the 2008 UAAP seniors basketball championship, read along with the kids and reminded them: “Start early in making reading as a habit, because it can make you smarter. Don’t be like me, I started late. While you are still young, read more books, newspapers, anything that has the right values.” With Marjorie Gorospe

I admire these people who help our youth to become a book reader. Truly, this is a challenge for all of us to read. Afterall, nobody is old to read.

Everybody should grab a book, newspaper or any reading material to broaden their minds.
After all, reading is an important and vital source of knowledge and learning (apart from experience of course).

Well done Inquirer. You always lead the way among the local dailies.

Kudos to INQUIRER for bringing back the hobby of reading to the youth! Much has eaten up our kids’ time thus they take reading for granted. When I was in elementary I was considered a bookworm because I read everything. Sometimes my parents would scold me because of staying too late in the library. when I was in fourth grade my class ended at 4:00 pm & I would stay in the library until it closes at 8:00 pm. Reading has helped me a lot & it’s wonderful to know that there are people most especially pop icons who inspire people to read. I hope I could be one of the guests for INQUIRER’s Read-Along Sessions soon.

The Government and NGO’s should work together for free comic books containing special value for poor kids because even how you inspire them to read if they do not hqve the money to buy a book if won’t help them and this will be just another publishity stand for those celibrities and networks

“Do as I say, and not as I do”, eh, Kris? It’s too bad you didn’t learn anything from all the alleged reading you did in childhood. You remain to be a selfish, incosiderate, morally bankrupt person. It’s too bad your expensive education didn’t really do anything for you.

It is good to know that even celebrities have time to inspire our youth and future leaders to read books and expand their knowledge. Kids should not just get used to just watching tv or surfing the net as their habits. Books are still and should always be of the essence.

I admire these two celebrities for encouraging the young to read book. May they continue the campaign so that the young would acquire the knowledge that are not found on PSP and other interactive games in the internet.

Finally Kris has found the appropriate event to bring her baby James. Kris tends to overwhelm the audience by bringing her special child and her younger son to shows that does not need them to be there. People want to watch her show and enjoy the way she handles her shows. The audience however should not be subjected to seeing her two children with her. Time to stop being a doting mom and get on with the show. Leave the children where they need to be……and not on the set with mom.
