Most baduy songs in your playlist

Posted under Humor

(Disclaimer: This is not for the faint of heart. This is just me during a thunderstorm.)

I COULDN’T stop laughing as I read a playlist posted by my editor in a mailing list. He dubbed it, “Baduy Songs.”

Baduy is a Filipino term that describes something or someone who is out of fashion. It also sometimes means “geeky” or “corny” but that could be debatable. Baduy could also mean jologs or lowbrow. So if you say a certain song is baduy it means “bad” or “nasty” music. But I guess the meaning changes based on context. Anyway, let’s move on to our little story.

My editor Leo Magno urged us to post the most baduy songs we could find in our playlist. Apparently, everybody has a secret playlist tucked in somewhere in their iTunes folder or in their iPod.

He eventually posted at least 40 tunes he considered the worst songs he has collected (He’s willing to share them, if you like). I was floored. He even revealed that he had to do some research to match the songs with the artists.

Okay, I know you’re excited to know what tunes landed in his baduy songs playlist. Here they are in no particular order of baduyness.

  • 20 Minutes Before Takeoff (Dan Henry)
  • 628 (Europe)
  • Achy Breaky Heart (Billy Ray Cyrus)
  • Always (Erasure)
  • Angelina (Lou Bega)
  • Angelina (Psy)
  • Asereje (Las Ketchup)
  • Barbie Girl (Aqua)
  • Body Dancer (Magic Fire) “shake, body-body-dancer… shake…”
  • Boom Boom (Paul Lekakis) “boom, boom, boom, let’s go back to my room, so we could do it all night…”
  • Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom (Vengaboys)
  • Boulevard (Dan Byrd)
  • Brother Louie (Modern Talking)
  • Candyman (Aqua)
  • Da Da Da (Trio)
  • Dayang Dayang (Erika Macho)
  • Designer Music (Lipps Inc)
  • Dr. Jones (Aqua)
  • Electric Youth (Debbie Gibson)
  • The Final Countdown (Europe)
  • Give me Hope (Joanna) — Eddy Grant
  • Gloria (Laura Brannigan)
  • The Great Commandment (Camouflage)
  • Hit that Perfect Beat (Bronski Beat) — “Beat boy, beat boy, hit that perfect beat boy…”
  • If You’re Not Here by My Side (Menudo)
  • Keys Me (Alyssa Alano’s version of Kiss Me)
  • Lambada (Kaoma)
  • Liberte (Gilbert Montagner)
  • Like a Cannonball (Menudo)
  • Macarena (Los del Rio)
  • Magic Carpet Ride (AringKingKingKing) — Mighty Dub Katz
  • One Way Ticket (Boney M)
  • Ride the White Horse (Laid Back)
  • She Bangs (William Hung Version)
  • Square Rooms (Al Corley)
  • Sukuleu (Tantra)
  • Swiss Boy (Lou Sern)
  • Tarzan Boy (Baltimora)
  • Thai Na Na (Kazero)
  • We like to Party (Vengaboys – “The vengaboys are coming…New York to SanFrancisco..”)

Now, it’s your turn to share your baduy playlist.

The collector is old now, I cannot even recognize one song, LOL!

Elmer Perez

Thank God, not a single song on that list is in my playlist… hehehe

larii

Radio Gaga of Queen should be included in the lists. With so much respect to its professional members especially to pareng Freddie Mercury

Pablo Escobar

First and foremost, I do not agree on something as baduy. Being baduy is just a Filipino’s way of showing off his ignorance and having this illusion of being always in the “in-crowd”. Being yourself does not mean you are baduy. It maybe an act of appreciation to something, being individualistic or simply to satisfy one’s wants. I can not find anything with those songs mentioned in the playlist. They are all good songs made by talented people. The song alone recorded by the Filipino duo Dan Henry was by far comparable to the songs recorded by talentless “artists” (as they called themselves) who knows nothing but to borrow tunes from other artists to come with a rap song.

Vince Clark of Erasure is one of the best reknowned artists in the world. He was the original vocalist of the 80’s super-group Depeche Mode before going on his own. His song Always enjoyed a good spot for several weeks in the airwaves around the world. You called this music baduy? You should hear his Live Acoustic album and you will be amazed how he turned this electronic-genre tune into a crisp acoustic track.

I guess there is something wrong with you taste for music dude!

Erwin Oliva

Hi Pablo,

thanks for your comments. First, this is meant to make you laugh. About what makes it to the baduy list and what does not is really a matter of taste. Baduy is a term that could be debated upon, as mentioned in the post. One’s baduy playlist might turn out to be part of another one’s fav list.

Peace dude!

Saddam Hussein

Damn! Baduy pala ako for listening to most of those songs on your playlist! And I thought the 80s and 90s are my generation!

kuya eli t.

Baduy for one may not be baduy for another.

The “80’s” has been dubbed by many as music’s greatest decade. Though it seems that most of your “baduy” songs came from that decade. I guess our age is showing.

No songs from Air Supply! I consider most of their songs “baduy”. What about Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”, the all time videoke favorite? or all the songs (specially the covers) of Celine Dion?

Songs of the late Yoyoy Villame? Priceless!!!!!

bisan unsa

Unsa man mo mga bai, nganong baduy man tanang apel na kanta sa taas –hehehe tanang kanta naa ako oi.

Bruce

Whether we will admit it or not, at one point in our life we were all somewhat baduy..maybe because of the monkey see monkey do..or maybe because we want to fit in..heck I remember those days, at one point we were all part of some trend. In any case, these songs brings back tons of memories of our youth. So please enjoy and let’s laugh at ourselves for we were all baduy at one point.

therese

If only people would realize that every individual is unique, therefore, every individual has unique and different tastes, then people would learn to RESPECT that uniqueness and differences — so you may find all the songs in the playlist as baduy according to your vocabulary - you are respected for that — but not all people will have the same opinion as you do. Others will find one, two, few, some, most or all of them to be good, better or great songs –as I said, it’s because each have unique tastes and we just have to respect them: ergo, it will be better to be careful (or better to just keep them to yourself) making comments that will just offend the uniqueness of others….we all know the golden rule: do unto others what you want others to do unto to you, that is, respect and you will be respected in return….

Well Chap music is like clothes to a man during summer,it is up to one´s individual taste either it´s classical, pop, rock, blues
a serenade or flamenco music. I don´t find it baduy in a sense that, anyone that could compose a song that make it in the airwaves are talented people who live their life to create music for us. Just admire them and if you don´t appreciate it, chuck it away from your collections. And to the listening public they know exactly what they want in their prefered music, it´s a choice.

Jun A.

I just can NOT believe that YOU included in your list of ‘ baduy songs’ :

1) ACHY BREAKY HEART
2) MACARENA

I AM VERY FOND OF ATTENDING DANCES AND I WOULD DEFINETELY SAY THAT THESE TWO SONGS ARE THE LIFE OF THE PARTY !! I wonder–just wonder–how on heart can these two songs be ‘ Baduy ‘ !!! Can I assume that YOU are a conservative guy ?? ( just asking, no offense intended, buddy !! )

Jojo Lopez

to pablo escobar:

come off it, man! that’s why it’s called a playlist, for crying out loud. if you think something is not baduy in the list, then please remember the “theory of relativity.” it’s relative, that’s why he or she makes her own ipod playlist.

if you think there’s something wrong with the baduy songs in that list, then there’s something wrong with YOUR sense of taste for music.

but then again, that statement is also relative

so just sit there contenting yourself with your menudo and april boys songs and and no one would blame you for it, the same way anyone would make his or her own playlist o what is baduy or not, you’re not going to dictate tastes on anyone so chill

jahdelyn

uhmmmm…ademar, u wernt born yet when vengaboys were formed in 1997 or when las ketchup was formed in 2002? that must make you about 5 years old, in which case that makes u less than 5 years old =)

ganja

I guess Mr. Magno’s playlist speaks of the eighties and nineties. No offense but, I swear he can’t be serious that he has all those songs. I can’t believe someone would actually take the time out to download them specifically. Unless they came from a “the best of the 80’s & 90’s” cd collection. To each his own.

nognog

well, some songs by good and “cool” artists can suddenly turn baduy once it’s played over and over again in jeeps and fx taxis every morning!

in fact, i always expect to hear “love of a lifetime” by firehouse and a few barry manilow songs everytime i go to work.

there’s even this medley with a voice of a baby that plays over and over again, what’s this, the theme song of Cubao??

hehe, jologs rule! a-ring-king-king…

karolzki

Yes, baduy is indeed relative and as pointed out, basically cultural. Mahirap ma explain sa hindi pinoy or baka may parehas silang konsepto na kahit papano na a-approximate ang “kabaduyan.”

I didn’t know that Vince Clarke was originally with depeche mode but does it mean na pag otherwise “cool” siya, hindi na capable sa kabaduyan? I like depeche mode too…Subjective nga. I respect that some one here said nababduyan siya sa Radio Gaga ng Queen pero I would disagree as many other na maka Marshall Macluhan siguro…hehehe may sinasabi kasi ang kantang yun.

Pero if you think about it, yung “kabaduyan” may halong nostalgia dito. Baduy probably kasi noong pinakikinggan mo yung menudo, sinusumpa mo man si Ricky Martin at Robbie Rosa, naka short sleeved polo ka pa din ng primary colors na naka fold ang sleeves with your contrasting colored t-shirt!
Yan ang baduy. I think a little baduy (in limited doses hehe) is healthy kasi it is an experience of laughing at ourselves. Its being human.:-)

ems

swiss boy is definitely not baduy.. it’s actually very “cool”…
besides.. what’s more baduy than MYMP and those so-called artists (fartists, i say) who just rip and revive popular songs to earn money… geez… mabuhay ang mga orig composers!

andij

Most of Mr. Magno’s list of songs are truly baduy. But of course, people have their own taste of music, much as we have our own preferences in clothes, food and drink. Tho some of us may find things to be baduy, we cannot escape the fact that people have their own likings. If it makes them happy, productive and doesn’t harm anyone (esp if it makes him a better person and to everyone), then he is to be respected… despite his kabaduyan. In fact, baka yung kabaduyan pa nya ang nagpapasaya pa nga sa atin! In fact, people danced and jived gleefully with this songs. Tho these songs were classified “baduy”, still they became famous for being such. So, baduy songs are a hit… for some… even for Mr. Magno.

Here’s my share of “baduy” song… If All We’re Gonna Do is Dance by Hott City. But, i tell you, I DANCED CRAZY with this song… So, I’m baduy din…

Diva

Body Rock (Maria Vidal)!

Liz

First, Pablo, chill!

Baduy songs are cute in their way. I’ve some in my ipod, I get a kick out of them playing and someone hearing and saying that I’m baduy. I don’t mind, it shows that I have varied tastes and am a complex person (interesting) to know. I credit my dad, the most baduy guy in music, for this open mind in music.

My favorite baduy songs:
“The Last Flight out” (I forgot who sang this but it was a boy band, i totally love this baduy song)
“This time i’ll be sweeter” angela bofill is really great.

But I agree that MYMP should find new songs to sing. As in their own composition.

Go FX drivers! They are the purveyors of the baduy!

Erwin Oliva

Wow! This is overwhelming. ;-) Yes I agree that at some point, we’re baduy! We’ve had our moments when we catch ourselves singing Air Supply or Barry Manilow. Actually, you can’t deny that you don’t know one of their songs. Humahaba pa ang listahan. hehe

As one of my friend would say, these are guilty pleasures.

To those who are curious about Leo’s playlist, well, he has each of the songs I mentioned on his iTunes…and the list is growing.

gb

Any songs by Air Supply, Jose Mari Chan and Martin Niviera are the baduy of baduys. I’d rather listen to an unknown karaoke bar singer than these.

tukkling

its just a matter of acceptance of as to what kind of music do you want…hehehe. kailangan pa bang imemorize yan? grrrrrr..

Bobby

nora aunor songs….include vilma santos songs with edgar mortiz……

pinoyQ

geeezz!!! look at “Bong-Tarat-Tarat” isn’t that baduy too? But then, people are too ecstatic about it. Perhaps a New Baduy-lenium era?

b o k z

Hehehe.. I have most of the songs listed in my collection! I don’t consider them baduy, I just find them nostalgic, but I admit, I had a good laugh when I read the list. Well then, you can call me baduy already because I like listening to them, and I’m in my early 20’s…

Amor

The definition of “baduy” has always perplexed me. IMHO, if you find yourself singing along, tapping your feet, swaying or dancing to it…then it’s good music! And you don’t even have to call it a guilty pleasure, or preface your list of favorites with an apology!

If I were a songwriter, I’d consider myself successful if I made something like Buchikik, which everybody knows, than some high-brow song only the supposedly “tasteful” few can appreciate.

I won’t let snobs be the arbiter of my taste!

Gem

Yoohoo everyone!!! Based on the above list of baduy songs, I would probably be considered the Queen of Baduys! I actually like some of those songs and other songs I myself consider baduy like some of Sharon Cuneta’s Taglish songs (eg High School Life - for the life of me I don’t know why I still sing it).

I also love Yoyoy Villame’s, Air Supply’s, Jose Mari Chan’s, Nora Aunor, Barry Manilow’s songs that other commenters here have suggested as being baduy. Oh well–I can’t be listening all the time to Andre Rieu, Strauss, Mozart
and other classical and highbrow music.

To all the baduys in this world - CHEERS!!! And by the way, I think Vilma Santos’ off-key rendition of “Sweet Sixteen” was delightful ;) Yeah, I can hear a resounding “Yuck” from a lot of you. Take care everyone!

ghary

Manilyn Reynes’ SAYANG NA SAYANG
Smokey Mountain’s KAILAN
Bette Midler’s FROM A DISTANCE

Nell

I have Manny Pacquiao Songs in my iPOD. And some of the songs included in Leo Magno’s list. So am I baduy? Hehehe.

beng

Things become “baduy” when someone with just about the right amount of credibility claims something to be so, and someone who doesn’t have enough conviction happens to hear it, and spreads the thought.

TruBlue

“Thank God I’m A Country Boy” by the late John Denver cannot be beat as the worst! Also in fairness, JD had some good ones. Make sure the “Pony Boys” of Wright Park, Baguio won’t read this, they might start sending “death threats”,haha.

Dennis

Music and Lyrics soundtrack is so baduy! Likewise that song that goes “to the left to the left…” eeew! We Filipinos have a freak and perverted taste of music this is exemplified whenever I see street children or teens imitating a bling-bling style.. Truly we fancy having a colonial mentality and that is truly baduy.

McGyver

I have to agree with the theory of relativity, as has been countlessly mentioned in the posts. But I also have to agree that many of those included in the list, I consider them quite baduy, too. Let me just say that if there’s something I find in those songs that made them baduy to many, is their having been “gasgas” at one time or another.

We hear it, not quite like it, but then we hear it all over–tv, radio, dance clubs–as in all over. Then everybody starts to sing it, people from all walks of life. It’s played in every occasion, like Christmas or Valentine parties in posh neighborhood, at proms, or even binyag, kasal in the remotest villages, you name it. Then we start feeling tired listening to them and we go like, “ano ba yan, yan na naman, di na sila nagsawa!”

So years later, medyo masakit na sa tengang pakinggan. It like bringing back the bad memories again.

Then it’s “baduy”. IMHO..

jonathan

include all the songs of eddie peregrina, april boy regino and his brothers (paano ang puso ko, di ko kayang tanggapin, atbp. ) Songs with name titles like soledad, lorena, tina, etc…. Ten guitars, green2 grass of home and other most-abused karaoke songs. So…. Baduy is FUN and COOOOOOL!!!

nikolai

These songs are not in my playlist but i just have to share it
1.All air supply songs particularly “making love out of nothing at all” - title itself is nonsense, it irritates me hearing it, especially when the high-pitched guy sings his part.
2.Piolo Pascual songs, whatever he covers suck. He is just so trying hard to sing.
3.Rachel Ann Go’s songs (except this one which i forgot the title but has something “here we are” in the lyrics ). She keeps on doing overdramatic melismas and out-ot-pitch whistle register notes that makes her a perfect copycat of legendary singers like mariah, shanice and minnie ripperton.
4.Recently, i find “Way back to love” from music and lyrics baduy. Dont get me wrong it just didnt work for me, though i really love Drew Barrymore.
5.”Somebody” by Depeche Mode, its just too trite.

piggy

barry manilow songs are baduy? wahhhh..then i shouldnt get caught singing “mandy” out loud again. seriously, what’s baduy or not should is subjective or relative as posted above..that is why i totally disagree that yoyoy’s songs are baduy..buchikik

francis

KNIFE should land the top list! kadiri talaga!

barok

music evolves and probably what’s baduy in the 90s are a hit in 80s & 70s. It may depend also in social classes, what’s baduy for A&B are a hit for DEF.

joey

hehehe! i love aegis songs! “akala ko ikaw ay akin…” and ” pagibig kong ito…” they are in my ipod playlist. martin nievera is baduy? i dont think so. hes performing live here in las vegas!!

Peter

Victims of Love by Joe Lamount.. hehehe

Hamdan

There’s nothing like sooo Baduy than to hear sing Willie Revillame.

kuya eli t.

I can’t help but mention this for my final repartee - i truly believe that the “baduyest” songs of all are all the songs (both originals and remakes) of all those sing and dance boy bands such as westlife, boyzone, backstreet boys, N Sync, New Kids on the Block and others!!!!

jerika

how about ricky martin’s “la vida loca”? di ba super baduuuuyy non???

Jess

I rather called baduy those singer/composer who adapts tune or melody from the original composition.
And those artist who revived and recorded Eraser Head’s and Apo Hiking Society original composition.
Twenty minutes Before Take off by Dan Henry is a top rater during late 70’s.I remember it was always been requested in AM Radio station DZBM,DWIZ and DWBL

Sankt

contrary to a lot of people, i don’t think it’s embarassing to have these songs on your ipod. i have them! i listen to them because once upon a time, i was playing tumbang preso while dan byrd was singing on our neighbor’s transistor radio…i quickly finished my dinner so i can join my cousins in the street disco so i hear “shake, body dancer”….or that a moviehouse back in the province kept playing “Swiss Boy” during intermissions. yeah it’s baduy, but i bet you get that feeling in your tummy when you hear some of those songs.

pia

Im trying to to think of “baduy” songs that i’d like to be listed here but strangely nothing pops in my mind. Those are baduy all right but perhaps they wont be as much annoying if only radio stations and karaoke bars would permanently eliminate them from their playlists. and oh.. also.. i wish variety shows should stop doing revival numbers of those songs (read: The Divas and Divettes’ versions of I Will Survive, Aegis songs, etc). The original versions are still way better. Those songs have served us (or our parents) for a good number of years. It is about time they take a bow and usher in fresher sounds. :-)

Caroline

Funny. There’s this one song - dont know the title or singer, but its like, Remember M, Remember E, put them together remember ME. That one never fails to crack me up : )

thord

I love square room and tarsan boy

I considered a song “baduy” if the lyrics na walang “laman”. Jose Marie Chan’s songs are melodically “baduy” but the lyrics are deep.

dinasmoon

filipino pala yong dan henry? wow! thnx for the information.

Pioks

ANG MGA “TANGING INANG” NOVELTY SONGS NI LITO CAMU AT ATBP.

Pioks

Ang mga “Tanging Inang” novelty songs ni Lito Camu atbp.

Joey Alarilla

Hi Caroline, the title of the song is “Remember M Remember E Remember Me” hehe and the singer is George Hamilton IV. Actually I don’t remember how the song goes, just Googled it hehe it’s not my favorite song, I swear :) Defensive — di ako baduy haha. You could see the complete lyrics here if you want http://www.lpdiscography.com/h/Hamilton/hamilton_steelrailblues.htm

And pareng Leo, like I told you the other night, di baduy yung “The Great Commandment” by Camouflage. Magpapakabaduy na lang ako, I like that song haha. Anyway, if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, baduy is in the ear of the listener. OK yung baduy playlist mo, patugtugin natin uli, pati yung mga baduy songs in your regular playlist :)

Cheers!

Jim

meron din yata sina Tito, Vic and Joey na version niyang Remember M, Remember E put… Tanungin nyo yung tatlo :)

Leo Magno

Hello

I must agree with Sankt. The reason we have these “baduy” songs in our playlists is, one way or another, we WANT to listen to these songs. whether we truly like the song and embrace the kabudayan inside us, or simply because it made an impact kase nga we still remember them and even make fun of them.

And by the way, the mere fact that this post has received (so far) 55 responses means it’s worth discusing, baduy man or hindi.

I disclosed my “Baduy Songs” playlist to Erwin Oliva one night out of sheer lightheartedness, and yet some of the responses here have been serious (haha!).

Just the same, am expanding my OWN baduy playlist, and from the original 40 it has grown to 50 so far. That’s the power of peronalization. I get to choose my own songs in my own playlists, others may or may not have that playlist or choose their own songs as part of THEIR OWN playlists.

That is also the power given us by this blog exercise. You may or may not disagree, and to some extent, that disagreement gets heard, no one is right or wrong (of course the songwriters would disagree). =)

By the way, I have received many comments why some Tagalog songs were not in the list, and just to clarify, I included in my Baduy playlist only the foreign baduy songs, thanks to the post that said Dan Henry was a local act (I suspected this already because of the intonation, pronunciation, but could not confirm it). That song has already been removed from the said playlist

Cheers and mabuhay ang mga baduy! =)

Henry

Baduy nga yung iba na nasa list.I love the 80’s is someone know the artist of the song Pancho Villa…disco song

McGyver

Kung kabaduyan din lang, let me share some of those in my playlist (maybe accidental :D)

Spaghetti song (Aww!!) - SexBomb Girls
Otso Otso - Bayani Agbayani
Boom Tarat Tarat - Willie Revillame
Itaktak Mo - Joey De Leon

Fruity

DESIGNER MUZAK? hahaha… truly peak of the peak in kabaduyan. Merun pa, how about yung song that has the line “In the boulevard” ? Can anyone recall that? Montik ko na batuhin ng hollow blocks yung juke box ng neighbor namin because of that. It was almost always played back to back with “Knife cuts like a Knife” My god! Horrors!

Fruity

Ah, and the other one that always cracks me up was that super baduy bit-song played by Joey de Leon in Todas. The ending of his/her Helen Bola radio love-tragedy show was always … “At para sa yoh, ito ang walang kamatayang … “Hands-Up” Bwahahahaha.

Wanda

Kung kabaduyan lang ang pag uusapan may babaduy pa ba sa mga songs ng “April Boys or April Boy Regino” whatever? Maybe because i love rock n roll *winks*

1. Your Eyes by Cook Da Books
2. Reality by Richard Sanderson
3. Can’t Be With You Tonight by Judy Boucher
4. Wake Me Up Before You Go Go by Wham!
5. I Don’t Go To USA by Stephan Remmler

Mabuhay ang mga baduy!!
