THAT was the interesting question posed by a caller on Canada’s “In this Corner with Russ Anber” boxing show.
View the YouTube video clip to find out Anber’s answer.
How about you, do you agree?
Pancho Villa’s real name, by the way, was Francisco Guilledo. Here’s a video of his June 18, 1923 fight with Jimmy Wilde for the vacant world championship, courtesy of the same YouTube user who uploaded the previous clip.

Some Filipinos have a penchant for wasting their time putting down their fellowmen.
No matter what your opinion may be, I suggest you just keep it to yourself (especially negative ones) and let`s rally as one nation and one race behind our successful fellowmen like Pacquioa, to serve as our inspiration to rise beyond our own failures to finally achieve the unity that we as a nation has been longing for a long time.
Rightly or wrongly if a Filipino`s pride is at stake we must unite and show all and sundry that the Filipino is not only worth dying for but worth figthing for as well.

Pancho Villa and Elorde. Truly legends and natural and professional. They also boxed when sport really wasn’t touched by big business. Now in today’s era many matches are fixed…the money counts in the end for the boxers in today’s match, then it creates false stars and champions.
Z Gorres and Boom Boom Bautista are also current favorites of mine - very natural, professional and talented but they aren’t tools of the media or politico (Good thing, they’re too good!), which is why they aren’t as exposed. PR can come into play. But that’s not sport. Sport should be on its own, and the term “hero” has to remain pure and away from these things.

pancho or pacman? pareho lang! pareho silang pinakamagaling sa magkaibang panahon.

sa akin c navarete ang d best filipino boxer of all tym.. sunod c onyok..
September 18th, 2007 at 10:21 pm
Popularity wise, Pacman is the winner by a mile.
Still remember thought that without the skills and heart of Pancho Villa, there would never be a Pacman.
September 16th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
I think Pancho Villa is the greatest Filipino boxer. He had a raw talent and a lion’s heart. Pacquiao is a commercial fighter, popularized by media. The administration used him to divert the nation’s attention. If he is really fearless then why he let the rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez slip away. He could have proven that the the draw with the Mexican was a wrong decision. Now he will be fighting Barrera, a Mexican who had beaten 3 years ago, and considered fighting for the money eventually for his impending retirement savings account.

Useless question!!
There is no basis of comparison because nobody in this generation have seen any fight of Pancho Villa. It will be unfair for both fighters. For those who will choose also. They will be misleaded.
September 10th, 2007 at 6:53 am
Pancho Villa. Because we are from the same city (Iloilo City). And he change his name to Villa because he comes from the district of the city called Villa, where my parents chose to build their retirement home. But the Pacman is just too good.
Why do you have to ask this question?
September 10th, 2007 at 3:35 am
Of course Manny “PACMAN” Pacquiao is the best Filipino boxer of all time. Even mass on Sunday has low attendace and crimes almost stops when PACMAN fights. Almost a national holiday everytime PACMAN fights.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
both pancho villa and pacquiao are great fighters that brought pride to the filipinos. there is no point of comparison as both guys exist on different time and technologies..mabuhay ka pancho villa..mabuhay ka manny..! ipanalo mo ang laban kay barrera sa oct.6,2007..!
September 9th, 2007 at 11:22 pm
It’s really hard to compare fighters from two different eras.
100 fights of Pancho Villa is enough for him to be the greatest but the quality of Manny’s opponents cannot be undermined either.
It’s a tie.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:15 pm
sa noon pancho is the best . sa ngayon pacman. but sa kanila dalawa kung sino ang pinaka. pacman para sa akin.
September 9th, 2007 at 11:13 pm

September 9th, 2007 at 4:02 pm
When it comes to popularity, it’s Pcquiao, considering that we now have 85 million filipinos compared to the popularity of Pancho Villa with only 2 million pinoys then.
As to skills and talents, it’s Pancho Villa. He became a very busy boxer with over a hundred fights to his credit. He became a champion with raw skills and pure talents considering that Villa didn’t have the comfort of coaching, the gym and the equipments.
He opened the window for filipino boxers to fight here in the states and make a decent style of living. with all these added together, it’s Pancho Villa by a mile.
September 9th, 2007 at 10:22 am
Gago talaga ang nagsabi luto daw ang away ni Manny against the Mexican. Pinapakita mo lang talaga kong gaano ka bulok ang pag iisip mo. hoy pinoy gising !!

pacman
September 8th, 2007 at 4:18 pm
It seems both fighters are good. I think Pancho Villa don’t have the same publicity that Manny had today. I always saw Manny’s “fight for the nation” on TV thats why i’ll vote for him and majority will. Simple.
September 8th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Pancho Villa created a boxing world for filipinos. Many boxing heroes will come and go…but pancho villa emerges and will always a bases of comparison among boxing greats…
Manny Pacquiao, I considered him the most disciplined, hard working and dedicated sport hero.
September 8th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
For me Pancho Villa is d best. During his time how many people knows about boxing and how many Filipino family can afford to buy TV or radio even in the whole world but still the world knows him and acknowledge his greatness in boxing. Pacquao is only recognise even small children because of WHAT!!! modern communication and beside Pacman live longer than Pancho.
September 8th, 2007 at 9:15 am
100 plus fights at the age of 24??? thats not impossible because there are very few fighters then and getting a fight is not hard unlike today. i dont know much about pancho villa and i know manny very well so i go for the pacman

For me, Pacman is the greatest Filipino fighter as of now. Greatness here does not only take into account the boxer’s skills, but considers as well his impact to Filipino boxing fanatics. He has brought the Filipino boxers into the highest level of recognition in the international boxing community. Go Pacman and kick some ass on your Oct 7 duel!!! Mabuhay Pilipinas!
September 7th, 2007 at 10:20 am
Luto naman ibang laban ni Pacman. Sponsored by the Philipine Goverment for political reason. Tanong niyo nalang sa mexican na kinalaban ni Pacman. When they fight Pacman they always think of the Money (not Manny).
September 6th, 2007 at 11:21 pm
..there is nothing to compare of those two wholesome heroes that has bring pride to our motherland…great figther!! there both champ in the heart of most filipino..
September 6th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
For me , they both great fighters but on different time and style.

pacman is my vote
September 6th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
for me its hard to compare both fighter in a different time frame. Pancho Villa brought first to the world that filipino is a world class fighter. In his generation with the technology is still on the slow pace where news and to view is very remote. But base on thier individual accomplishment they both earned the respect and recognition of the boxing world.Manny on the other hand enjoys the overwhelming exposure that the world has to give, ppv, indosements and media exposure sure manny reach the wider audience globally. Thus making manny has the edge over pancho villa in terms of recognition. But for me both deserve to be named as the greatest filipino boxer ever emerge in the phippine soil.
September 6th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
with over a hundred professional fights under pancho’s belt before he died at the age of 24, I would say pancho’s the greatest filipino boxer ever. hands down… on skills, manny is much better definitely. but that is only because of the better training manny got
September 6th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
For me the greatest Filipino Boxer was Manny Pacquiao. He fought all Top rated boxers in the world, and indeed knock them all out. He even erase the career of of the mexican legends. He also unite Filipinos and as a whole nation by his boxing skills and that boxing sports program in the philippines was so greatly improved.
September 6th, 2007 at 11:04 am
for me both are greatest fighter for filipino
September 6th, 2007 at 10:45 am
pancho villa for me.
for nathaniel rosolada, how can Filipinos at that time watch pancho villa on tv or stay glued to a radio? manny pacquiao is the present idol. can’t compare though for the skills
September 6th, 2007 at 9:51 am
pancho villa is the greatest of all filipino boxers and his the inspiration for the new generation…
September 6th, 2007 at 8:53 am
For me Pacman is the greatest Filipino boxer because every time he has a fight majority of Filipinos watched him and he seems to unite the entire nation. Mabuhay si Manny!
September 6th, 2007 at 4:38 am
i think pacman si much better than pancho villa.
