SO BARRERA MAY KNOW PACMAN’S BOX
    “A Modern Version of Pandora’s”
    By Granville Ampong

Emerging from the world of publicly known distractions ranging from film acting bearing an alleged deep-seated love affair with Filipina actress Ara Mina to the realm of other numerous business projects that he ventures into, to the rumor-bound dissatisfaction of much lower financial return than what was estimated of his upcoming fight, Pacman (43-3-1, 35 knockouts) has been so focused as ever and embarks on a self-punishing regimen of training that can be viewed in historical terms as astonishing.

“The Pacman is in great shape, and I say to Barrera: Good Luck!”, says the celebrated trainer Freddie Roach, when asked by this writer for what is his final message to Marco Antonio Barrera (63-5-0, 42 knockouts)who dares to fight the Pacman again come this October 6 at Mandalay Resort and Entertainment in Las Vegas, Nevada.

As of this writing, October 1, 2007, Pacman has just packed for departure with his entourage to Las Vegas, Nevada. He is ready. In fact, he perks up at the thought that he is in for another exciting, entertaining and revealing fight of his life. He picks up pieces of memories from his boxing journey in 2004. But, he appears to be more calculated. His countenance and his eyes, in particular, deliver a cutting message to Barrera, though unspoken, that his revenge borders to impossibility.

Meanwhile, despite his hectic schedule, he graciously takes time out signing autographs for the huge crowd of fans at the Wild Card. Even his supposed to be solitary hours of the day are less certain to be undisturbed. Nevertheless, Pacman sees his fans as his crowning stars. Thus, still he shines.

On the other hand, having tested the Pacman’s fans with the intimidating scenario about Pacman to be knocked out by Barrera within seven rounds and even by my intimation that I have dreamed of such - - -in fact, enough to inspire outrage, this writer must forge an alliance of prophets. That, I vouch for Pacman’s discipline of his training an inclusive factor to win over Barrera. But, such factor is not an exclusive one. It is not even about wisdom. It is not just even about mere hard work. It is all about his unpredictable wit and unbeatable inspiration of his “Pinoy Tayo” brand as a matter of pride, are the distinguishing drives of his impending victory, I suppose.

The issue at hand: What sort of intelligence and boxing skills does Marco Antonio Barrera really have with his arsenal to exact revenge of his humiliating loss to Manny Pacquiao, the “Pacman”, in 2004 considering that the latter has just turned himself into a consummated, better-skilled fighter that what he was in their first encounter?

Yes, Barrera strives to be in the best shape and discipline as ever and invokes a more focused mindset for this upcoming fight. “He may know what to do, but to execute the same in the ring is quite another,” says Ocho-por-Ligo, an avid Pacman’s fan.

Having scrutinized Pacman’s boxing skills and tenacity of his power punches during his last sparring sessions, I vouch that Pacman may only need seven neuro-vascular paralyzing shots to knock out Barrera.

“But, it took more than seven hard shots to take out Barrera in the eleventh round when they first fought. Barrera is a tough ‘hombre’ to crack, but he is still a man.” said one Mexican fan who visited the Wild Card Gym during Pacman‘s mitts session. “ And if he bleeds, Pacman can kill him.”

Asked about his view of the likely outcome of the fight, he added: “Pacman is like the ‘demon’ of the Super Mario game, so to speak. You see, the ‘devil’, in rhetorical terms, does not put one into harms way once. He does it many times over to torment his opponent, to break him, then he owns him.” Therefore, “ it will be a punishing night for the Baby Face Assasin,” he added.

Notwithstanding, “Barrera is very resilient. If his camp of four years ago meant he was not in as good a shape as he is now and withstood a beating from a conditioned Pacman, I think it will take more than seven hard blows to finish him off that he is in the best camp, best shape of his life. Having said that, we will bear witness to a classic match! I cannot wait,” said another fan who hails from Guadalajara, Mexico.

However, Pacman being a fast runner in his young years, more so being considerably agile at playing basketball, even more so being skilled at choosing and distinguishing the best cockfighters that he picks to champion a derby, even at his formidable mindset at playing billiards and much more of his tactical handling in playing poker cards, all these encompass his rare ability, versatility and intensity of focus to come up with effective direct attacks and counter-attacks that will succumb Barrera for a second surrender. Pacman would just be too fast for Barrera, even if the latter were to fight him in his prime years. Better yet, many boxing experts said he cannot beat the superlative blinding speed of Pacman’s shots.

Were it not for his overreaching ambition to annihilate Pacman, Barrera’s contemplation for a better retirement would have remained unperturbed for all time. It must have been better if he opted to relegate his desire for revenge to the back burner. But because of his thirst for revenge, a veritable Pacman’s box, inversely proportional of all forces of distractions that Pacman has, has been opened with such potential devastating consequences on Barrera’s health, which may bear traumatic and lingering pain, that which his much more humiliating loss to Pacman will become his lifetime nightmare.

Barrera says: “I see Pacquiao each night I dream.” This, to me, sounds like his demolition by Pacman in 2004 has sunk in the molecules of his brain, and now, he is in for the most intensely distressing, delibitating and consummating nightmare.

Conversely, no amount of time that may elapse since the time he takes his morbid wish to fight Pacman again will ever cure his problem of pain. His pride being the “Baby Face Assasin” that he is, being the legendary Mexican hero, may, in some way, insidiously decay himself bit by bit like a cancer that has metastasized. And, that, it is the bearer that incriminates his own devastation, which, in this case, a dawn of hope but a moment of frustration envelopes. And, he will find his own excuses to be utterly false.

Pacman by TKO within seven rounds.
