Arroyo unhappy over Beijing debacle

Yup, like most Filipinos watching the Beijing 2000 Olympics, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is also disappointed. Marc Anthony Reyes of the Philippine Daily Inquirer writes:
MANILA, Philippines—He has not talked to her yet, but Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Butch Ramirez yesterday said that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is “not happy” because of the country’s Olympic medal shutout in Beijing. The PSC head said he heard from very reliable sources of the President’s reaction after the athletes fell, one by one, by the wayside of the road to what was expected to the first ever Olympic gold medal. The President personally rooted from the sidelines for the 15-member Olympic delegation during the opening ceremony.

Yes Everybody was very disappointed of the result in this olympic. We dont have even any single medal. What happen to philippine sports now?We know even the poorest country in the world got gold and why we cant.I think total revamp in philippine sports is needed. We must give first priority to sports which have a big chances, like boxing, taekwondo.Swimming is very least chances.Boxing and Taekwondo must prioritize in our olympic campaign.

Any Filipino will be unhappy for sure about the Philippines' very poor olympics performance. Somehow the issue is not being unhappy and dwelling with unhappiness till the next olympics, but to really do something -- ensuring we won't be unhappy again. Now that entails a lot of things, e.g. reevaluating the country's sports programs, athlete recruitment and training... Why not throw in some sponsorships of deserving athletes, so that they really feel they are being taken care of (financially). That can be a motivating factor.

Sports committees should look at sports heroes like Manny Pacqciao. What make them (him) "tick"? Is it the purse money? Is it self-discipline? Is it physical prowess? Is it love for the sport? Is it love for country? -- These are very basic, actually. If sports committees know what make a champion, then they can make champions, unless of course there is no support from concerned institutions. -- That would be another story.

Comparing the Filipino players with other countries, they are in my opinion like lambs going to the slaugherhouse. Poor training, poor coaching, inferior training facilities, poor nutrition, and unskilled coaches. We can't even beat the poorest country in the Carribean, Jamaica. And the President is expecting the Filipino players to get a medal? Oh my God! I am really sorry for you guys. Even the Blessed Virgin Mary could not help you.

to tell you honestly i was not surprised by our performance in the olympics. actually, it would be a major surprise should we win a single bronze medal, cmon guys lets face it, pang-sea games lang tayo. as if we did not participate in the games. our athletes became spectators instead of competitors, if thats the case they should have just stayed in their homes and watch it on t.v. i wonder how the whole world thinks of us now.

There is a simple explanation for why the Filipinos have not produced enough medals in the Olympics or gold. The mindset of people running the sports programs tend to run them like politicians run the government. They're not professional enough maybe except for a few who have shown their organization and management skills. The sports program has to be run professionally with objectives based on performance, and criteria in comparison to the World, and it has also become scientific and technical.

Some of the things I read in Philippine newspapers are just amazing:
-I saw the diver Fabriga on French CBC and he does look overweight for a diver, the chubbiest in the group. He redeemed himself with his last two dives.
-Two swimmers ripped their swimsuits (freebie courtesy of the BOC). Didn't the swimming federation have their own swimsuits. One of them didn't even bring a spare swimsuit! Going to battle unprepared.
-An official who was dreaming about a swimmer getting into the finals or semi finals, had only, "really?" to say when a reporter told him, the swimmer's best is off by 8 seconds.
-The officials boasting of medals when their wards didn't have much international exposure. The Olympics is about competition nothing else. If one doesn't win, at least they go down fighting.

Sad for the athletes.

The government should fund the training of kid athletes today, the future olympians, rather than dangle money when our undertrained and underfed athletes are already in the Olympics. It takes years to train a real Olympic medallist competitor.

I like the idea of just focusing on sports that Pinoys have a better chance of winning medals in, like boxing or taekwondo.

I am mr ramirez's call for all sports officials who are responsible for the dismal performance of our athletes to resign. If GMA is unhappy, so are we for the dismal performance of our economy, she should also heed the that call.

Dear PSC:

We, the OFWs from Saudi are always watching the Olympics but we are not surprised to the outcome and performances of our athletes. This is reality and expected to our 15 delegates who went there and represent our country by the time olympic is about to begin. The moral here is that they did there best but still not enough. Better to increase the pot money to 30M or even 100M because for sure no one can get that even the next 2 olympics again. PSC must do something to improve this tragic incident so that you don't waste our taxes. That's all.

We dont blame the athletes, nor the officials, but it is clear the Philippine government did not have a concrete plan in sports development. China has a very good program of developing gymnasts, etc...Benchmarking with our national records along with world records of athletes before sending to olympics should have been done. More importantly now- in the age of super athletes.

Nakakalungkot naman na wala tayong ni isang medalya in this years Olympics. Pero I am sure this will serve as a wake up call to do better in the 2012 Olympics where we will finally end our gold medal drought.

Ohhh!!!... Does she (Arroyo) really care huh!!!... And they (PSC and IOC heads) are really cares too???... Hmmm…

Does that matters really brings their attentions???... are they’re really bothered with it???...

Does this write ups/article a story telling a lie or just publicity???... I don’t think these people really bothered and seriously affected by this issue…

These people don’t really care what happened in Beijing… and if they really are!!!... They should do something about it… seriously, sincerely and patriotically…

But imagine this… everybody knows or the world really knows that we are very good in boxing… and why the hell they sent only one boxer???...

And everybody knows that we are no matched to swimming… why not just spend the budget of this swimmer to our boxers either???… So we have a good chance of getting a gold or even silver and bronze….

Let our history repeat itself… by focusing on our own sports which brings us to medal tally list… which most of neighboring country were listed… even Afghanistan are proud to be on the list…

Madame President and sports executive… please, if you really care and really bothered… please do something… and no need for this kind of publicity… just keep it in your room…

no...lets keep on concentrating on basketball...because thats what weve been doing for the past 50 or so years...we dont even compare against the chinese or the koreans and yet sports officilas think that we can compete in the olympics with our own basketball team...we cant even find filipino players in the philippines to play in the pba, we have to get fil-am players...that just shows you how bad the sports commission is in this country...concentrate on boxing....there are good badminton players in the country...and everywhere you go there a re people playing table tennis...but no, we need to concentrate on basketball...sheeshh

Once again, another headline at the end of Olympic. "populous country like the Philippines failed to get a medal". what a shame. Poor preparation of our athletes coupled with lack of budget,(buti pa byahe nila may budget, pati yung "board and lodging nung mga nasa gobyerno na nag aattend ng ".... I hope there would be someone who would lead a cause for a total revamp of sports in our country without any notion of corruption.. MERON BA NUN??? hay. sana naman may maligaw..

Actually it's not that dissappointing. What can you expect in a sports committee without appropriate budget. Athletes are not motivated, there are many kind of motivation that the governmetn can offer to those athletes, that I think is one of the factor why we didn't even reach any finals. Pati kasi sports pulitika parin...ano ba yan??

What the goverment needs to do, is to bring in a couple coaches through out the world. To have any chance to win medals in the Olympics. The past few years, I have watch Little League World Series (softball) girls here in the states. Yes the girls finish second the the USA. But they were 1st place team in Asia, and second place over all. If they can do it, then with great coaching and hard work the Philippines can and would win more the just one medal in eight years...

too much time and money wasted in building a phil basketball team. too much politics also. kinalimutan na ang ibang sport events. let's all admit it. physically we are not capable of defeating any basketball team who competed in the beijing 2008. kailangan pa kumuha tayo ng players na nahaluan ng ibang lahi para makabuo ng isang team. the result? wala rin. the players just got paid millions from taxpayer's money. why not develop players in every sports event/category like swimming, badminton, boxing, track/field, table tennis..etc. etc...where we have a bigger chance of winning? we always have special award from wushu. duh? the olympic committee does not even recognize it as a sport. special event lang. kawawa naman ang pinas. talo pa ng mga ibang bansa (na hindi mo akalain na meron palang bansang ganun). kahit mga athletes sa africa nakakuha kahit isang medal. isipin nyo... eh mas masasarap pa ang kinakain natin... mas maganda pa yung tinitirahahn natin kaysa sa kanila. tsk tsk tsk... talo talaga kapag nahaluan na ng pulitika.

The Philippines was once a powerhouse in sports espeicially in Asia. The socio-economic decline of the country contributes a lot to the same decline of the country in the sports arena. The political situation particularly political patronage contributes to this decline. To recover the past glory, the country must introduce sports-mindedness at the grass-root level by promoting sports fests and clinics starting at elementary schools. And it must be kept constant until there ia a wide base to choose the best and not just a "ningas cogon" situation. But there is one big problem to be solved first and that is proper nutrition. You will not develop a wide base of talents that will excel in any sports if many of the potential athletes are hungry or poorly fed. So the socio-economic situation must be improved first before we can really improve our performance in sports. China is a good lesson to learn.

Our accomplishment in the beijing olympics just shows how poor really our country is.

Our Goverment officials should be taking the blame for this failure because it is their responsiblity!

No surprise, patchwork mentality will never get us anywhere. I'm sure everyone is scrambling to get their "sports reform programs" dusted off but we will, in the timeless tradition of Filipino ningas cogon, fail again in 2012, 2016 and beyond. Unless you kick all the politicians out of the sporting world. But I am not concerned about the medals. The good news is, it's just sports. Worry more about how we fare in economics and corruption indices. Those are the real games we have to win. Right now we are rock bottom. If that doesn't worry us, we're truly beaten.

Arroyo is unhappy about Olympic debacle? That's okay the military is happy for her.

It is indeed a VERY disappointing Olympic for the Philippines. Surprisingly, even the poorest country on earth got a gold medal. It's about time for the government of the Philippines to act and prioritize its GOALS!!! Philippines is so much behind!!!!

Yes, especially when you look at the medal tally that most of our neighboring countries have a medal to show. Almost all of our athletes were eliminated either in the qualifying heats or in the first round of the competition. Sports officials and our athletes should stop bragging that they set a new personal record or SEA Games record. These records they were talking may not even be good to medal in 1960's olympic. It only shows what kind of athletes and sports officials we have. Next time please send athletes that can be at least competitive, stop sending athletes especially swimmers who are using olympic to prepare for the coming SEA games, a shooter who cannot shoot straight and long jumper after finishing last is even requesting his coach to be trained abroad. Please concentrate the taxpayers money to sports we can becompetitive like boxing, taekwondo, weightlifting.

Ano Manila Olympics 2212?
Wah, in my dreams...hahahahaha. Philippines is very behind by the ff;
1. sports
2. socio economics
3. politics
4. economy
5. infrastructure
6. agriculture
7. education
8. health
9. technology
10. etc..ang dami ..cannot count anymore

Pero meron naman tayong mai pagmamalaki... NUMBER 1 IN CORRUPTION..hahahaha.

You know what is the problem? It is not the government but the PEOPLE of the Philippines is the BIG PROBLEM. Since the time of Marcos, DISCIPLINE is and will always be the downfall of our country.
To be an OLYMPIAN requires discipline and not blaiming the government. I do not know why we still send delegates and spend money recklessly including in the exhibition game where medals are not counted. This just shows how backwards our country is. I AM A FILIPINO but I do not think that I will live the day to proclain I am proud to be a Filipino. This is SAD and TRAGIC to say but it is a fact now. Philippines is one of the top 3 most populous countries not able to produce a single medal together with Bangladesh and Pakistan. Even the very small island of Singapore PRODUCED a medal. This is very depressing but not shocking since that is the Filipino way - just ride on the coat tails of somebody else as evidenced by saying " The Philippine Flag was raised for the gold in the Wushu Game ". I am sorry to say this but this is evident too here in America where the Filipino Community are scattered and everybody wants to rule and be the president.
Fellow Filipinos, wake up and see what is going around us. Afganistan won a medal and they are in rubbles now from the war. We are more developed than other poor countries who won medals but this will not be for long if all we do is move backward. China's might and dedication should serve as a wake up call for Filipinos but I doubt that it will. Well, Philippines can always lay the Golden Egg for the next 2012 Olympics - 4th time in a row is fabulous and the 92 million people will be how many ---million ? in 2012. I wish my motherland the best.

As usual, the "turuan" as well as the katakot-takot na investigations will follow but, truth to tell, when the economy is down (inspite of Gloria' protestations that it is up) sports and culture are placed on the back-burner. Papaano naman, our athletes do not get the proper training internationally. There is no support from government.

Arroyo unhappy over Beijing debacle?!? As if she has done anything good for sport in this country! And she must be hallucinating to think that dangling that P15M as a bonus would be enough to get us "what was expected to be the first ever Olympic gold medal". Oh I get it, she's after all, the Queen of her "Enchanted Kingdom".

I salute and honor the athletes. The Filipino athlete in the long jump should have gotten the gold medal if not for the politicians and the President riding his back. Hehehe....

Arroyo shouldnt be disappointed. She should be ashamed. The Beijing olympics showed where is Philippines going--nowhere. If only our leaders, politicians shuts up their mouth and work their brain and as_ _ s out, our athletes woulnt be this poor. You can't blame the athletes. You blame the system of the government, of how it approaches sports, of where it's pouring our taxes. See, while other countries are now thinking of how to improve their sports programme, the Arroyo government is spending billions just to kill the Moros in Mindanao. Once, the Australian government had been embarassed in a Canadian olympics and the government promised not be shamed again. So they built top notch sports facilities with a worldclass training programme. And China, they bought a training programme for swimmers from an Australian coach and they have results. This is really an embarassing olympic result from a country with an embarassing politicians.

Winning a medal in the Olympics should not be the end goal. The goal should be developing world class Filipino athletes. Not winning any medal in an international sports competition is an indication that the current sporting program in the Philippines is not effective in producing competitive athletes. I hope the President stops showing disappointment every time the Philippines doesn't get any medal from any competition. Again, not winning a medal is an indication of a weak program. Show of disappointment from the President may indicate her not having control over the sporting program. It may appear that she is trying to blame other people from this failure. A leader should show responsibility like the US President when he showed responsibility over the 9/11 terrorist attack and did not blame other people in the government about this incident.

Will giving a 15M PHP cash incentive develop a world class athelete? NO. Again, the government motivation here is not to develop world class athletes but to get a medal out of the athletes' desire to earn the money. The government's intention is not to develop athletes but to save the face of the country from not getting anything from the competition. The government should look deeply into their program and establish a long term plan to develop world class athletes. If the government starts now, there may still be time for the 2012 London Olympics.

I have vocally predicted ever since this Beijing Olympics started that no Filipino athlete will ever win a medal. This upon knowing that only one qualified for the boxing event. I have heard last week in a tv interview with one of our olympic athlete that his months of training did not suffice the competition. He really thinks that months of practice would give him any medal. One problem is, some of our athletes think that they are already competitive if they are featured in tv commercials. I really laugh at seeing one athlete swimming with his long hair swaying outside his swimming cap. At least, someone should study physics.

Someone opined that it would take a lot of funding to produce a medalist. And the Philippines lacks that one. I guess the countries like Sudan, Togo, Tunisia, Moldova, Mauritius and Cameroon have bigger funding than us because they won medals.

Gloria should not be disappointed or unhappy of the result of the Philippines in the olympics. She should be in a better position to know her athletes before they went to Beijing. The PSC is under her supervision and control. One should be unhappy if one expects something to be achieved but was not attained. In the case of Gloria, I think she should have known in the first place that medals are not achievable.

Some one also told me that we won gold, silver and bronze in wushu. I checked the official tally and wonder why the Philippines was not there. How dare are we to boast of an achievement that is not cognizable. Filipinos talaga!

Cojuangco and the POC officials should take responsibility as well for the poor showingin Beijing - not just letthe PSC take all the blame.

POC stands for Phil. Olympic Committee - they are in charge -right?

Does GMA reallyhave the political will to do whatis right with Cojuangco and co? Or will she blam it all on Ramirez and the PSC alone?

Unhappy? I don't think they have the right to be unhappy. These athletes aren't well trained for the olympics. Do they still even wonder why athletes form other countries win? They have a lot of practice. I'm sure, right after this olympics, they'll just have a few days or months of rest then they'll go back to work for the next olympics at London. How about us? We practice less than a year before the actual olympics? The government isn't supporting sports that much. Instead they just depend too much on FilAms or other half Filipinos, who can't even speak our language. Why do they do that? Of course, to spend less on the development of athletes and put most of the funds in their pockets.

unhappy is not the word they should be saying to themselves, it shud be "Nagsisisi" for it is their fault that there is no sports "development" happening here, politicians have been using sports as entertainment, like gladiatorial fights, para makalimutan ng tao ang mga kalokohan nila.
gloria offered millions to athletes who would bring home medals, had they spent those millions in training the athletes maybe there will be medals to speak of.
ramirez is a gentleman to take the blame and offered to resign, but it is not all their shortcomings, we should have a wide base of grassroot development, scouting, and recruitment. maybe when we have 1.5 billion population to choose and compete our athletes, then we will top the medal tally, so let's grow the population

Archery, shooting. Yung mga yon. Dapat kasi pinagpaplanuhan ang Olympics, di lang sa preparasyon ng mga atleta, pati na rin sa pag-aaral ng mga events na mataas ang probability to win given the mechanics. Boxing, fine, according to weight classification pero, medyo malabo ang scoring system, what I mean is, let's broaden our views in searching for the gold but in a very rational and wise way. Basketball? Asa pa kayo! Sayang lang ang pera. US nga natatalo na e.

Lets all look forward to the next Olympics in London. The Pinoy is great, the politicians are rotten

mediocore officials equals mediocore coaches and trainers equals mediocore athletes.its whats happening in our sports.

As Usual sisihan na naman nang sisihan.. What's new? Nothing will happen to the Philippines kasi puro kayo kurakot...

Please do not blame the character of the filipino people for its failures in the Olympics, or any other endeavor. The filipino has its strenthgs and weaknesses that makes us unique, as with any other culture. What the nation should focus on is our leadership. Who are we putting in charge of our nation to lead us into the bright future that we deserve? The complete failure in the Olympics is just a symptom of what is wrong with the GOVERNMENT...and the LEADERS (alleged). It cannot or never be the Pinoy, because if you put him or her in any other society that allows them to succeed, they flourish, prosper, obtain happiness...and encourage their friends and relatives to leave the country of their birth.

Long jump Ate Glo...long jump ate glo...
ikaw naman masyado kang nagmamarunong. Isipin mo muna bago ka magsabi ng "I am disappointed for the Pinoy athletes or unhappy of the result".

Who do you think to be blame? The athletes? Wow....I thought you are a bright, intelligent...come on. Ask this question to yourself first..are your POC chiarman is sport minded? Is he or she has vision and a right goal to achieve a world class Pinoy athletes? Then, if Conjuanco and other POC officials are not doing the job well, then what are you waiting for, kick them. Hu...beware do not politicized the appointment...select the the best not the politicians...baka naman pag politician eh...sasakmalin lang ang pundo...warning...warning...ate glo gising.

Sports in the Philippines is for the can afford Pinoys or FIL-AMS only. Officials are not scouting talent in national levels. Hiring Fil-Ams will only degrade local athletes confidence, therefore athletes optimal performance cannot be achieved. Officials does not have faith in local athletes, those athletes who compete because of monetary motivation will only compete for personal glory not for the Glory of our Motherland.
Philippines is not America...True blood pinoy don't distinguished themselves as Fil-Ams (little-brown American)...but Filipino only..there is no other type of Filipino in the world...there is only one filipino and that is the Pinoy in the Philippines.

pilipino ay kurakot ang mga opisyal

There's a corruption Everywhere but I think that's the first priorities of a certain politics was to corrupt if sitted into a position. "Hindi lahat" I dont think there's a problems with our athletes but i believe its something to do with the required and right equipments to do well. See, im half pinoy and i love pinoy athletes because i know we can do better.

In recent Beijing Olympic issue: I have read some article, that our sports officials and their coaches/trainers were proudly and broadcasting publicly, that some of our athletes were broken some of our own Philippines records…

Amazingly or maybe Disgracely!!!…

Lady’s and Gentlemen’s of Sports Organization, Committee, etc… please AIM HIGH!!!… Sports event is about winning and bringing honor to a nation and to its people…

Ang bababaw naman ng kaligayahan nyo… mahiya naman sana kayo kahit konti… at samahan nyo na rin ng konting pagsusumikap… di nyo ba napansin na lahat ng mga kapitbahay natin na bansa nakakuha ng medal and they were all listed in medal tally list…

Please next time… we don’t need an announcement, that you have broken some of our own records which brings nothing but humiliations….
