Why is Pacquiao fighting De La Hoya?

09/01/08

Posted under Boxing, Manny Pacquiao

UPDATE: In this video, Manny Pacquiao announces his plans to retire next year and his intention to run for politics in 2010. Pacquiao says he will be retiring after three more fights, including the one with Oscar De La Hoya.

MANNY “Pacman” Pacquiao that he never imagined the day he would be fighting Oscar “The Golden Boy” De La Hoya in the ring. Admitting his admiration for the Mexican fighter, Pacquiao also believes that he is ready to face a tough opponent.

Marc Anthony Reyes of the Philippine Daily Inquirer writes:

For national boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, fighting Oscar De La Hoya “was never in his wildest dreams.”

Openly declaring his admiration for one of boxing’s biggest stars, Pacquiao wrote in his column in the tabloid Abante that he never thought he would be in the ring soon with De La Hoya, seven years after fighting in his undercard at the same MGM Grand venue.

Fans also see a knockout win for Pacquiao, writes Reyes.

The majority of online boxing fans believe that Manny Pacquiao will pull off a “shock knockout” victory over his boyhood idol Oscar De La Hoya when they clash on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

In a poll conducted by the Pacquiao website Pacland, 46 percent of the respondents said the national boxing hero will beat the taller, bigger and craftier De La Hoya.

Boxing observers also share the same opinion, favoring a win for Pacquiao.

Former boxer Barry McGuigan, in an article on the Internet, wrote that De La Hoya will “have Pacquiao on the end of that long jab and will be looking to drop the right hand on him at every opportunity.”

McGuigan expects Pacquiao’s corner, though, to draft a clever war strategy— “courtesy of the great tactician Freddie Roach”—to “bring De La Hoya down.”

“Pacquiao will want to dictate terms, apply pressure from the center of the ring, keep the tempo high,” said McGuigan. “If De La Hoya is weight-drained, the body will be a big target for Pacquiao to take away his opponent’s strength and resolve.”

Win or loss for Manny, is still a history in the making!

Well… if you still don’t know… with all due respect to the one who said “its the economy… stupid!” the plain straight forward answer to the Blog here is, “It’s the MONEY… stupid!” Personally this author fervently believes that this is gonna be the waterloo that Pacman saw coming 200 years into the future and never believe could happen. Icons believe stuff like this won’t come their way ever!… Like they are vested with superman qualities. Napoleon was like that and Pacman will go that way too, if he bites dog into this money thing with dela Joya! But heyyy, what does he care… he’s going home with 50Mill on this fight. With most Filipinos devastatingly left holding the perennial bag if he looses this fight, we bag holders should care! Pacman should just leave it alone and be an immortal Philippine Icon forever. He’s done one better than Ali by taking 3 Weight Class Champ Belts. He should not get Filipino on this by screwing his immortality by plain old Filipino Foot-in-Mouth-Failure- Trip by getting too focused on the Money…. he should just leave it alone and be at peace and become the most well respected fighter in Asia that he is now… We sooo got “foot in the Filipino ass kicked to hell” during the last 4 Olympiads…. I hope Manny doesn’t do one better on this by falling flat on his Face for 50 to 50 mil.

han

i don’t think so, dela hoya is a very good fighter, paquiao knows. maybe this is a planned fix fight as manny is announcing an early retirement by 2009.

manny

kay pacquiao ang puso ko, pero kay dela hoya ang pera ko. meaning, kung pupusta ako, kay dela hoya ako. tutal matalo’t manalo, milyones ang kay pacman. mahirap namang durog na puso ko, durog pa ang bulsa ko kung matalo si pacman… i don’t think pacman can beat dela hoya. kaya ni oscar ang suntok ni manny. hindi ako sure kung kaya ni manny ang suntok ni oscar. magka-iba ang “tindi” ng lakas ng suntok ng bawat isa. isipin natin na “magagaan” ang mga nakalaban ni manny, kung ikukumpara sa mga nalakalaban ni oscar. imagine na lang kung si mayweather, trinidad, hopkins at iba pa ang kalabanin ni pacquiao baka kung saan siya pulutin. kung ako ang tatanungin, ayaw kong matuloy ang laban. this is “nothing to gain, evrything to lose” for manny. this is all for money. naghahanap lang ng pagkakaperahan si dela hoya, wala na siyang makita kaya si manny ang napagdiskitahan. kasi si pacman ang “the hottest” pero pag natalo siya dito which is very likely, pacman’s image and price will go down.

Manny Pacquiao, do not listen to the prodding of your hangers-on and mirons. You don’t have to do this. You have achieved the greatest honor a Filipino athlete could possibly have, along with Elorde; I think the dizzying earnings from this bout with De La Hoya is the reason you agreed to it; I agree, the money is good, but I find it strange and unethical that you will slug it out with Oscar, international boxing’s fair-haired boy, who openly supported you in your fight against his fellow Mexicans. Haven’t you earned more than enough? My advice: do not ENGAGE in politics (again). Just don’t. You are not made for it. People only want a share of your money. You can either retire (though you are still very young) and be remembered as the Philippines’ greatest boxer of all time, or a failed politician/product endorser/tv host wannabe who also happens to be a great boxer (I think you are not meant to be on TV and you know it–people make fun of your diction, and you look too stiff on tv). I mean you are ABOVE all these. The hell with showbiz, the hell with tv, the hell with corporate advertising. YOU ARE MANNY PACQUIAO. It’s your choice. Look at what happened to Olympian Onyok Velasco. Poor guy, despite his achievement in the 1992 Olympics,he was reduced to being a bit player in stupid Pinoy sitcoms because he joined showbiz. Where is he now? Don’t go that way, Champ. Don’t try to do everything at the same time.

Mightyman

As they say, be careful what you wish for, because you might get it all, and you don’t like it. It’s loaded saying. But for as long as our Pacman is careful, he would get it, gain it, cherish it. Pray that he does not get himself hurt. Otherwise, it’s a win-win for him (even if he loses the fight).

greg

This is nothing but money for Manny. If he lost, he is richer by several million dollars. Take note U.S. Dollar. Multiply this by P50.00 to the dollar, he has so much money to fund his campaign. Will he win in 2010, only God knows.

Like water and wine, boxing and politics wont mix. I hope Pacman will not meet his waterloo, as early as even before he fights De La Hoya.

If he loses, politics for Pacman may go down the drain.

Good luck to Pacman anyway. I want to see him win on both sides.

jleanto

Pacuaio-Dela Hoya fight is too commercialized and this is being set up so that boxing will be one of the much talked about sport other than Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant. It’ll be a good fight and I should say that the money you’ll pay for PPV or ringside will be worth it.

gerald

pacquiao will fight dela hoya for one reason only that is money because whether he losses or not he will take home 100million dollars plus ara mina and kristine hermosa.. i hope he will be beat by dela hoya in a knock out. a KO that will knock him down forever..

Retski

Manny is one of best boxer of all times especially in this era. Fighting de la Hoya just shows that Manny is preparing for his future as well. Yes theres the money involved here and being a prize fighter that manny is, he would like to say “that this fight is for the filipinos” Manny has already proven himself to the many filipino fans. Whether he fights de la Hoya or not.So if he wins or loses the fight he has made a name for himself. Now can he do the same when he runs as a politician? We’ll never know.

Joe D.

I’m afraid for our Manny. He might get hurt in the ring. De la Joya might weigh in at 145, but on fight night he will weigh his middleweight weight of 155 or more. He will be bigger and heavier by at least 10 more lbs. And if Manny gets hurt, he will never be the same again. He should refuse this fight, inspite of all the $$$$.

dollars

why is pacquiao fighting dela hoya? there are 15 million reasons. a 15 million dollar reason, that excludes what he gets from pay per view sales. he is a legend, he is a hero but he is also doing all of this for the money.

James Concepcion

ar

don’t be fooled by all those comments by this newsmakers; it’s just a marketing hype that pacquiao can beat dela hoya… this is all bout “money’, ‘money’ and more ‘money”. so don’t be fooled that pacquiao can beat, can knock out the golden boy… they just want to earn more on ppv… and enough with PARA SA BAYAN line of pacquiao… the news puts more weight on that but check his interviews; always, if the price is right. ha ha ha

ross

just be happy for him, stop trying to tell him what’s best. am sure you dont want anybody telling you how you should run your life or career if you have one.

reydoms

pera-pera na lang ang labanan dyan

Kabayan!

Well guys all we need to do is just keep our Filipino fighter all the support he needs instead of pulling him down right? Thats one trait Filipinos should take away being “negative” and pulling one another down.
We should be proud of the fact that we have one great Filipino athlete who can excel and would go lengths to do a fair fight!
Go Manny we are proud of you—

ben llanes

I say to Manny, Go for it!!! Give it all you got. Should you lose this fight, you’ll still end up being a winner for the simple reason that you did not hang up your gloves just because a formidable opponent was lined against you. Besides, you could ask for a rematch and then make another 50 million! Heck, you’d be setting the standard for every Filipino boxer that will ever want to become one.

Windblown

it’s all about money!!!!
money pacquiao need for his political ambitions……..

and i believe it is not a fixed fight like the other blogger says.

Penn

Having more money without HONOR is dead. But it is good to have much of it with HONOR. Be a true Filipino hero Pacman. I pray for you.

Alawi S. Saeed Abdulla

Pacquiao is my favourite boxer, he has proven that he is the best ever boxer in the world. He destroyed and early retired all the reputable Mexican boxers. Dela Hoya also a Mexican and he plays under the U.S. flag, His wish is to hurt Pacquiao and not fight him, just to revenge to his country men, all of us know that Dela Hoya is the riches ever boxer, I call him (the Billionaire Boxer) he does not care about the Money from this match, he need to revenge despite he is not in Pacquiao weigh class. Dela Hoya the only one maybe can confront Pacquiao for few rounds only (4 – 6 rounds) you will see all the other ex-legend destroyed grounded Mexican boxers such as Barrira, Morales & marquez on the viewers seat and after 6th December 2008 Dela Hoya will join them on the viewer seat. All the best Manny Alawi s. saeed - Bahrain

gael

Pacman should go the farthest he thinks he could go. and in this case, fighting one of his most admired boxing idol. But then again, if the only strong reason why he ’s doing this is about the money, then Manny should be very ready to make that gamble, that is,Honor for the money. And dela Hoya was never an easy opponent to be looked down upon. Im sure, Manny will have the toughest time of his boxing career. Good Luck Manny!

Treb Yu

Manny might win the fight. I agree…But running for COngressman, I dont think so.

Treb Yu

History of losing the fight…

iamjj1

It is a farce everybody wants to believe to be true, the little boy winning over a giant, with Pacquiao they say having nothing to lose but everything to gain. Not everyone is given a shot at $23M for less than an hour’s risk to life and limb. Ask anyone and you may be surprised how many would be willing to face Goliath for that kind of money!

ronald

what lays ahead of manny’s negative career, blame it on the people around him. most specially the politicians who’s taking advantage of his popularity and MONEY! at the end of the day, kawawa ka lang manny. so jinky, step on the limelight. bantayan mo na si manny baka pera na, naging bato pa..

Gary Guarnes

Its a plain and simple boxing profession and personal career of Manny Pacquiao. No need to put colors on his intention and motive. if he beat de la joya great if not fine that’s the boxing career cycle.

manny

Swiss

Well, I think a lot of people want to see two great fighters like Pacman and de la Hoya on the ring. Regardless of whatever motives outside the ring, boxing happens inside the ring. Win or loss.

Marko

I know that pacqiuao could bet Dela Hoya…I think its a fair game because it is not easy to loose weight like Dela HOya and also with Pacman to increase its weight to 140 sometihng…..

Go!Go! manny…….we know taht you can bet him……..

Marko

Ouch!!!!what will happen to Pacman if he lose the game!!!!!

My god!!!

choy

why do pinoys always pretend to be so morally upright when athletes try to take the big cash windfall? hey, they’re pros, this is how they make a living. if you’re a basurero and someone asked you to clean out EDSA for 1 million pesos, wouldn’t you do it? the problem is when athletes are offered big money and they take it we always accuse them of being “mukhang pera”. hey, this is their living. if we’re offered a raise or bonus at work, do we not accept it? or do we just say, “hey, i love my job, i’d do this for free.” lets be real. this is a good opportunity for pacquiao even if he loses. if he fights someone who’s not as famous and ends his career on a high note winning his last number of matches, sure it’ll be better for his record and for history, but will that feed his family? remember, when he retires and if he doesn’t succeed in politics, where will he get his income? most boxers end up broke after a few years. so its better for manny to pad up the bank account and just enjoy the rest of his life.

Esteban JOROLAN

As what is said…it is all about money. This is what professional boxing is….PRIZE FIGHTING. Manny is one of the most crowd drawer boxer to this time, and Mr. Arum will not let this golden opportunity pass.( Strike while the iron is hot.) Arum will make use of this situation and Manny also do so as with de la Hoya. Win or loss they are all winners. But weight classment in boxing is not made for nothing. The reality will take his show afterwards. I have seen de la Hoya fighting Mayweather and I can see him knockingout Manny if Manny can not do this in the early minutes. It is not enough to live with I can knock him down but there is the physical law that we must respect.. Ug makachamba it will be history, but I can see this an another Elorde fighting the Japanese in a higher weight category. KUWARTA NI BAY…I just hope that Manny will pay the just income tax at his poor hometown to help his town as he is planning to be a politician in the future. Kay kanang income tax niya daku na na ka-ayo ug ikatabang sa iyang lungsud kon tino-oray na siya nga moserbisyo sa katawhan afterwards in the name of politics. As what is Roger Federer is paying in our tax chest here in Switzerland. They pay there taxes and we, the poor citizen here in Switzerland, make use of this. I hope he will do the same, or only the small tax payers will pay honestly there taxes and the rich and influencial will just pay at will.( momho lang ba)

marshall

manny pacquaio will now be then an enormous well respected boxer ever if he soon knocking out the golden boy del hoya of the upcoming biggest fights ever…lisod ning bisaya kay mais ang kinao…mosukol jud…abante mga bisaya…

talakitok

talakitok

imakaiw

let’s just wish PacMan goodluck … whatever he does, he carries the country on his back with his BIG fighting heart. if he goes down, he will do it with his head up.

and he cannot be brushed aside as a loser as yet!

besides, $20M+ is a lot of money to pass-up, much much more than the incentive for winning an Olympic Gold medal.

Star

Manny Pacquiao deserves our morale support… and that’s what every Filipino needs. In life there are ups and downs, those who chose not to risk - even losing their lives for a friend like Jesus did, may end up keeping his stack of coins buried till he dies. You have talents and potentials don’t waste it like anybody else, you could learn more from the lion king - Simba. Manny has a fighting chance like that of De La Hoya. Crab…

Louie

I wish we could all be reminded about what happened to Flash Elorde who’s father-in-law (Mr.Sarreal?) became so greedy and didn’t mind the obvious devastation just to get more money by fighting Ortiz! I love Pacquiao but I think his heart is no longer in the ring. Unfortunately, it is already in the field of politics! I wish he would not listen to the Arroyos, Chavit and Lito Atienza. What a waste of talent…..what a waste of energy….what a waste of being a Filipino icon….

Bisaya

It’s simple…MONEY (Manny)!!! He’s planning to enter again into politics and he needs more money to finance his candidacy despite his popularity and i guess some politician allied to his party will be finance by pacquiao. :(

dudde

This will always be about the money!!

Its hyped event and a big pay per view fight! Regardless of the outcome, Manny will be paid bigtime!

He needs money for his political ambition, which sadly is one of his most stupid moves. He allows himself to be used by dirty old politicians of this corrupt Philippine government. Well, I admire him for his intentions to help the poor and the needy. But the way that he thinks that the only way to do it is by being a politician is absurd!

Honestly, I am rooting for him on this fight to lose bigtime! I think he’s already way above his head and that he needs a good smackdown to get him back to his humble roots.

Vic

It’s his political ambitions that is throwing him into a fight that he can hardly win.

Because of his desire to launch his candidacy again….he needs 3 fights to amass a lot of money to finance his campaign sorties and that of his party mates.

Jaspoy

I am always proud of myself to know that some Filipino, coming from a very lowly history, was able to rise to the occassion in the world of sports in such an excellent fashion. My rational thinking mind does not give me any evidence that it will happen. Pero on the other hand the feeling of fighting a legend, with sure money - of course, does no harm. I would look at it as a practice session to prepare me for heavier punchers. My hope is that an upset will occur. It will be a crazy day if a KO will make the Golden Boy drop at the count of 10. I would think it is the greatest moment in Filipino 21st Century. Granted that Oscar is way bigger the weight drop will pave way for Pacman’s victory. If Pacman would lose I will accept it as a fact - no Filipino fought the likes of the Golden Boy; but if Pacman would win I swear, as any Filipino would, I will be a prouder Filipino and I will thank Pacman again for giving me the reason to be so.

makoy
