Marquez: De La Hoya-Pacquiao match a ‘great, great fight’

Posted under Boxing, Manny Pacquiao

Yes, Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez wants to be in Oscar De La Hoya’s shoes right now, as he declared that this match is going to be “a great, great fight.”

Excerpt from  Salven Lagumbay’s report:

Although he is salivating to be in Oscar De la Hoya’s shoes, Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez says the Dec. 6 battle between his tormentor Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Oscar De la Hoya is going to be “a great, great fight.”

Marquez was reacting to a question posed by the media as he prepares to challenge Ring Magazine lightweight king Joel Casamayor on Sunday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“Well, I mean that’s (De La Hoya-Pacquiao) a fight that everybody wants to see, everybody is talking about it now,” said Marquez, who still insists that he beat Pacquiao in their two outings in 2004 and 2008.

The Pacman/Golden boy forthcoming 06th December fight is looked at by most sports analysts and yours truly as a ‘weakling’ bout for the following reasons:

1) Manny has more steps up the ladder to be an undisputed boxer-pound for pound or the greatest boxer of all time- you name it, Manny could have gotten hold of it while he’s at his prime;

2) Manny may have his pocketsfull of greenbacks in this fight with Oca; but, Manny may end up like Shane Moseley, whom dela hoya just made a ‘punching bag’ out of him and ‘knocked out’ Shane’s popularity;

3) A bout with Hatton could have established firmly Manny’s stand on that pedestal of ‘pound for pound’ boxer; thereafter, Manny can definitely see the return from ‘retirement’ of Floyd Mayweather Jr, who would just love to join the bandwagon of other boxers who want to be popular and again, for Floyd, should they have a bout with the most popular Filipino boxer of all time, a crowd-drawer and a good business sense for promoters!

4) The short-cut to more greenbacks could only be construed as the easy way out for Manny to declare his own early boxing retirement, which, according to his quarters, may be realized in August 2009 and two more fights after dela hoya.

But, how 100% sure are we, as Filipinos, that our guy in Manny could not be hurt in this upcoming bout? I’m sure Oscar would just train triply hard to hurt Manny, even if Oscar foresees a loss, due to his age dilemma…

Let us just all hope and pray with Manny that he (Manny) can just hit his best hard punches during the first three rounds of the bout and put Oscar on that farewell canvass he’s prepared for himself in Las Vegas on the 06th of December 2008—a yearender, indeed for the Golden Boy!- “Adios, queridos seres morir es descansar”:)

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Boxing Guru

For BigHeartForAll,

FYI, Shane beat Hoya twice and he was the punching bag.

Boxing Guru

Manny’s fight againts Hoya is a win-win situation as long us he can stay away from Hoya’s punches. Even if he lose the fight, he will still be a winner because of his fighting heart.

But then again, for 20 Million… I will fight any boxer.

A response to BigHeart4all..

Yes, Pacquiao does have plenty of steps to take before he can be considered an ALL-TIME pound-for-pound great..and fighting Oscar won’t be a step in that direction..

Dela Hoya didn’t make a “punching bag” out of Shane Mosley. Matter of fact, he couldn’t even beat Sugar Shane. And actually, Mosley became more popular by beating dela Hoya twice over.

Mayweather is already popular. He was even THE STAR of America’s Dancing With the Stars. PBF doesn’t need Pacquiao. And, for the record, Money Mayweather is way better than Pacman.

And yes, this “big fight” with Oscar is Pacquaio’s way of earning enough money to fund his laughable foray into politics.

biguglybrian

mr. bigheart4all, i think you got it all wrong. It was dela hoya who was made a punching bag by sugar shane mosley. In fact 2x did mosley beat dela hoya professionally and 1 time during their amateur days.

fredbuten

marquez wants to fight manny for a third time…
for me yes,
if he beat Nate Campbell and Juan Diaz,
if the price is right ….

Manny has two chances against de la Hoya, slim and none.

“1) Manny has more steps up the ladder to be an undisputed boxer-pound for pound or the greatest boxer of all time- you name it, Manny could have gotten hold of it while he’s at his prime;”

What do you mean. This makes no sense. Are you Filipino? Paki tagalog nalang.

“2) Manny may have his pocketsfull of greenbacks in this fight with Oca; but, Manny may end up like Shane Moseley, whom dela hoya just made a ‘punching bag’ out of him and ‘knocked out’ Shane’s popularity;”

Do you know what you’re talking about? Oscar dela Hoya did NOT beat Shane Mosely. Shane Mosely convincingly beat Oscar dela Hoya via decision TWICE. Next time you post do a bit of research.

“3) A bout with Hatton could have established firmly Manny’s stand on that pedestal of ‘pound for pound’ boxer; thereafter, Manny can definitely see the return from ‘retirement’ of Floyd Mayweather Jr, who would just love to join the bandwagon of other boxers who want to be popular and again, for Floyd, should they have a bout with the most popular Filipino boxer of all time, a crowd-drawer and a good business sense for promoters!”

Are you out of your mind? A win over dela Hoya especially via KO will more likely convince “Money” Mayweather to come out of retirement and fight Pacman. Mayweather KTFO’d Hatton easily while having a competitive match with Dela Hoya. And WTF??? Oscar is boxing’s biggest draw NOT Mayweather! Any fight with Dela Hoya is a good business sense for promoters.

“4) The short-cut to more greenbacks could only be construed as the easy way out for Manny to declare his own early boxing retirement, which, according to his quarters, may be realized in August 2009 and two more fights after dela hoya. ”

Why are you saying that this is a short-cut to more greenbacks?? It may be a short cut for dela Hoya but not for Pacman. Pac will be coming in as the underdog for this bout. He can be seriously hurt. And please understand that boxers fight for money first and foremost. Why the hell would you risk yourself and get hurt (oftentimes with permanent damage)?? Boxing is not a lifelong career. You only have a short window to earn big money so you better make the most of it.

If most sports analysts and yourself think this is a weakling bout… DON’T WATCH IT (but I’m sure you will)

This is a money making match no doubt,no thrill,no suspense because Oca is already an “old model boxer”.But both boxers have the capacilty to win.But if Oca will not be careful,he will have a hard time fixing back his face like what had happened to Barrera.Wish him luck.

malic

Si Marquez lalong kakalbuhin ni Manny if they will face each other again in the ring, mas ok pa fight na yan than with Oca,yun nga lang mas konte kikitain ni Manny.May thrill, may excitement, kakabahan ka talaga.Kay Oca parang manonood ka ng old movies, featuring old model boxer.

De los Reyes

This is a fight that prestige and pride are not on the line. Only a clever way to pull a sting on suckers to pay up 100 million dollars on one good small fighter try to beat another good but bigger fighter. Heck, the two fighters are smart. Why kill each other for the money that is already there ready for pick up?
