What people say about De La Hoya, Pacquiao match

| 60 Comments | 1 TrackBack
With the match between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao nearing (December 6), expect to hear more analysis and word war between the two camps. Will it be Pacquiao or De La Hoya? Is Pacquiao ready to face the bigger De La Hoya? Will the predictions or speculations turn out in favor of one? But what are the people saying about this match. Here are some samples we’ve gathered so far through e-mail. +++ Freddie Roach, who has been a consistent handler of boxing champ Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao surely knows his fighter and the science of boxing. Freddie Roach’s prediction that it will end on the 9th or 10th round is 95 percent sure. Let’s all bet on our national treasure even at 10:7. On the other hand, the camp of De La Hoya is lead by a new handler who has a good track record but his fighter is new to him. Antonio Iturralde, Zamboanga City, via e-mail Even though I'm a naturalized American citizen now for many years, I still have that Filipino roots and upbringing with me so naturally I always root for Pacquiao whenever he has a fight. But I want to tell you that this time I'm not rooting for anyone. Why? It is not because the Golden Boy is a Mexican. From the boxing standpoint, Pacquiao can't win. I'm no boxing genius but I have this feeling that Pacquiao will have his first defeat at the hands of the Golden Boy. And, I think it will be bloody. I have never seen such confidence from the Mexican population here in New York. And their points aside from being practical are mostly based on statistics. One thing they always point out is it should be quick and easy. Golden Boy will finish Pacquiao in the 3rd round or it will be a draw. Mariano Beltran, New York City, via e-mail We also welcome other opinions about this bout through this blog.

...i've been a fan of manny since he started to become famous, i've seen all of his fights and i would say that he fought the best way he could eversince. Though de la hoya seems to be favoured by lots in many aspects, i tend to disagree that manny is really that underdog, if he would fight the way he did with his last 5 fights, there's no way there would be a mismatch! just consider how david defeated goliath......

Antonio stay in your sleep and keep dreaming... i am for Pac but it is a long shot.

If Pacquiao fights de la Hoya like the way he fights David Diaz then I think de la Hoya will be in big trouble.

this fight is the most fooooooooolish, stupid thing that ever happened in the history of boxing.. this only concerns MONEY - pure & simple, forget those analysis & inputs of so called boxing pundits, they too are all stupid! this is all for show & money, boxing is really going to the pits!!!

The fight between Manny Paquiao and De La Hoya is seemingly a kind of "circus for mo money", satisfying an insatiable greed, feeding a larger-than-size ego and tolerating a sort of deep fraud in sports. The present media hype and "tete-a-tete" thrash talks between parties tend to heighten a farce passion designed to fatten the pockets of the clowns and their cohorts who in the end you'll see laughing all their way to the banks. In these times of crises, don't be suaded into forgetting your economic troubles albeit momentarily by betting into such fights for there is a more important fight to win for - a crown of eternal life...and believe in me.... only thru JESUS CHRIST! Manny wake up!

Bing H. Garnace, Iloilo City

we should support money pacquiao because we are filipinos...he's our boxing hero...everytime pacquiao fights..it's zero crime...it's only a sport but it gives all the filipinos the time to think...we can stand against all odds...like pacquiao.

From the start, i think this fight is all about money. I really can't see that pacquiao is fighting for the country. If he wants to uplift the Filipinos in the boxing world, there are a lot of boxers out there he could choose from (e.g. hatton at 140 lbs or marquez at 135 lbs). Come Dec 6, if Pacquiao can escape from a knockout, it can be considered his greatest feat.

yes, pacquiao is on his highest peak. so high that now he fights for money and calls it pride for his nation. what a hero of some sort. proclaiming it glory for others but deep inside its only for his own self. what a politician! all i can say is that if he is that so good, i want to see pacquiao grab 20 olympic medals if he can, but if he could not, he's such a waste. and for this match, arum, roach and de la hoya productions are the only winners. i pity manny for being so stupid and a slave for money, i hope he learns his lesson before his brain gets bogged down due to tremendous beating as all boxers do so (just like roach who seem to swallow his words when speaking his tongue). manny and his team chose number 6 as the date for fight night, i just hope his left tattoo still works for him on this one.

2 things to compare, paquiao's triumphs and graft & corruption in the Phils.,
paquiao: Always a winner against Lebwaba, Barrera, Morales, Diaz, Marquez, etc.(other big time boxers).
Phils.: Always a loser against election cheaters and big time scammers(by choice?).
Now let's hope, even if Paquiao loses, the Phils. finally win's one-Probe Fertilizer Scam & convict DPWH mastermind in Cebu lamp scandal and abolish Dept. of Agriculture and DPWH.

oscar de la hoya has to get manny pacquiao within the first 6 rounds to win the fight, otherwise, he's gonna lose the bout on points. the 6 year age difference will be the deciding factor if the fight goes the distance.

I'll see you the morning after the bout. Here in California the Mexicans are rooting for Manny, cuz Oscar is going to lose big time, probably early retirement.
His gold has lost its luster.

I somewhat disagree with the previous comment by Mr. Beltran.

First of all, if the Pacman losses, this is not his first loss. He already lost to a Filipino years back with a certain Ruben Torrecampo, he also lost to another Thai fighter way back as he was knocked out in that fight as a matter of fact, and he also lost his first fight with Eric Morales.

I think Pacquiao has a good shot in this fight against Dela Hoya simply because he has enough experience to do it against a fighter who is possibly over his prime.

Pacquiao has the stamina to fight relentlessly for twelve rounds. He has speed which Dela hoya no longer has, He has the chin to survive a big punch, and he throws punches in combinations of three and four and most of all, He can hit hard like a middleweight.

The last remaining factor I felt convinced that he could win is Freddie Roach's assesment of the two.

Freddie is familiar with the strength of both fighters having experienced training the two. Freddie knows the hardest punch Dela hoya can deliver and vice versa. According to him, Pacquiao punches harder.

I don't think Freddie would feed Manny to the lions that simple. I don't think so.

However, when it comes to ring smarts, Dela hoya has the edge and he defintely has the bigger chance to win because of this plus his experience but if the Pacman will play it smart, box Dela hoya in the first four rounds, I think Dela hoya will get caught in the late rounds. You cannot cheat body age.

Pacman works like a buzzsaw. He is a Tazmaninan Devil in disguise. If Dela hoya can't control him in the early rounds, he will lose.

I think Dela hoya can be controlled as he has shown in the past.

So the question here is, How can you control Pacquiao? I don't think there is an answer to that.

Let me remind everyone also that as of presstime, Pacquiao is the heavier fighter now.

That will take a toll in Dela hoya.

I do believe that Pacquiao has a shot.

Of course, my sentiments will be for Manny, but my money will be for De la Hoya!

Pacman is already a full blown ring tactician. I reviewed and watched all the fights of De La Hoya to all lefty opponents, they are far far comparably slow to Pacman. The big difference is the lethal and known one punch left hand power of manny. It can even end in first 2 rounds and the biggest upset in boxing history will be written, Golden Boy Tulog Kay Pacquiao.

I hope that Oscar will keep thinking like the rest of the public that he can really beat manny p. on this bout. A lot of people keep saying oscar is very confident about his ability to beat manny, manny knows what he's doing am sure he knows that he is the underdog in this fight which is his advantage. Oscar might be mentally ready for this fight but i dont he will last physically. Manny will win this fight but it wont be an easy one.Go Manny mabuhay ang Pilipino

I somehow agree with some of Mariano's opinion. Aside from the fact Oscar is more veteran and has lots of advantages, he's very smart boxer as well. But I'm not taking away some glimpse of hope that Manny has a chance. Though I should say its like thread through a needle. I'm a Filipino myself that's why I'm one of the many hopefuls.
To make it more clear my summary for Manny to win is: 100% perfect execution on out boxing Oscar.
while Oscar: needs only 60-70% of his plan to work for him to win(meaning Oscar could afford to commit minor mistakes and could still win the fight while Manny couldn't afford such thing)

I hate to say it but based on skills, achievements and physical disparity, our pacman is going to fall on dec. 6. The Golden Boy maybe older and definitely not in the prime of his skills but he still packs a wallop at 147 lbs. that pacman can't bear. Had it been at 140 lbs. at least, our pacman would have a more than even chance to defeat de la Hoya. But he allowed GBP to dictate the terms and conditions of the fight and got blinded by the 10-20 USD that he stands to earn win or lose. Pacquiao has overreached on this one and we will be a lonely nation by Dec. 6, while he crawls with puffed eyes but laughing on his way to the bank (With Ara Mina in tow!) . Tell me I'm wrong after Dec. 6, he can't even win convincingly against Juan Manuel Marquez!!

I beg to disagree with what Mr. Beltran mentioned in his blog. Erroneous!!! Erroneous!!! I've been here in New York for more than 15 years. All throughout those years, especially for the past 7 years, the Mexican population here are weary of the name Pacquiao. They knew that their boxers are no match for our herol. They don't even want to bet with me no more!!!! As for the Mexicans rooting for the Golden Boy, a lot of them don't care!! For them, Dela Hoya is not a true blooded Mexican compared to the likes of Barrera, Morales and Marquez!! They treat Dela Hoya as an outcast!!! Mr. Beltran, are you really from New York? You don't know what you are talking about. There's only one good thing that you mentioned in your blog, and that is you admitting that you are not a genius when it comes to boxing.

Well, this will not going to be easy on both sides. Hoya got his height advantage and experience that makes pacman easy for him to knock out. Pacman punish himself too for this fight for sure, just to knock out Hoya. If pacman maintain his speed he has the key to finish the fight. This will be a great match, and a sure rumble. As days go by no one can tell who will won the fight, one thing is for sure....one will knock down...the winner will be the last man standing....

I think Pacquiao will outlast Oscar in this fight. Had they fought say, 3 years ago I would not think Pac-Man would have a chance. Now, Ithink it is Pac- Man's time to shine. He will win on Dec 6th.

i do remember what happened to gabriel flash elorde when he crushed all his opponents in his division. he went up to meet ortiz and he lost.

This fight to me is between dela Joya and Freddie Roach, I think Oscar is fed up with Freddie, if this is five years ago, it's a done deal with dela Joya, but, once Manny get a chance to get inside, Oscar will wake up to reality that Manny means business.

this fight is a farce!

...nagbigay ako ng comment at opinion ko di naman napa-published, so wala din... hwag na lang kayong umasa pa..

...ayun lumabas din...sorry!

Of course I'd like to believe that Pacquiao can subdue de La Joya but that fight of many years ago between Ortiz and the late Flash Elorde comes to mind where Elorde was out for a long while on the canvas. It was that fight that caused Elorde te be banned to fight in New York. De la Joya is simply too big for Pacquiao although I am hoping Manny did not bite a little too much for him to chew this time. Good luck Manny!

we all see differently. if pacquiao will have his first defeat it will not be in the hands of dela Hoya. We all saw the last fight of dela Hoya that made Roach say he can't pull the trigger anymore. Malambot na ang mga suntok, and it won't or will never hurt Pacman. My hula-hula: Pacquiao in 7th.

My prediction - Pqcquiao will lost. But for Manny win or lost I think he's after the big bucks in this fight. He needs money for the next election... He wants money plus power...

my opinion this fight is not a easy fight for dhl as his draining in weight, 147lb is not the suitable weight for oscar considering his age & his not fighting this lb limit for a long time but still he has the power. if he will use his long reach he will win by points. but as he said if hes not going to ko pacman its a big disaster that's why he going to toe - toe which is of pac advantage. my prediction ud by pacman

I am an avid pacquiao fan and I've seen practically all the fights of manny ever since his amateur days up until his last fight. I've seen how he evolved from a lighter weight fighter until his latest climb in the 135 lb. division where he easily demolished the reigning champ Diaz. His Dec. 6 fight against a bigger and taller Dela Hoya, a media-hyped favorite will again become the second "Upset of the Year", the first of course as we all know is in Marco Barrera.

DLHoya will try to bring in the ring the speed and skill of JMMarquez that's why he chose Beristain as his trainer, and definitely wud be their gameplan.

Things that will favor Pacquiao:

1. I think Pacquiao has already met the best in Marquez, who is a lot faster and more accurate puncher than ODLH.

2. ODLH may have never met a "Southpaw" who is as good as Pacman and who is very agile with a lots of movement variatons.

3. Pacquiao cannot be tired throughout the 12 rounds. As we have seen in his recent bouts, he brings his real power even in the late rounds.

Things taht will favor ODLH;

1. He has a long reach vs Pacquiao and he will definitely make use of it. For sure, this will give Pacman one hell of a problem.

2. He is also very good counterpuncher ( but not as fast and accurate as Marquez)

3. He has more experience and fought many more seasoned fighters in the welterwieght. He could not have called by his monicker " The Golden Boy" if not for his oustanding boxing skills. He do have a heart of a champion.

Truly, it's gonna be Pacman's speed & power vs ODLH's reach and (also) power. My prediction : If it goes beyond 7th, Pacman will have a very good chance of eventually knocking ODLHoya out. In order to do this, Pacman has to be very "Patient" in finding the right target esp. starting 7th rnd. For one thing and always remember, ODLH did not earn the Golden Boy" monicker for nothing. The same pride would be his main weapon against Pacman come Dec7. But as Roach always saying, his prime is over and someone else has to be called the "New Golden Boy", and that's Manny Pacquiao!

I still believe in Pacman's BIG Heart. YES! He can shock them all!

I'm a boxing fan and saw the last fight of
Pacquiao vs Diaz. Remember Boxing is about weight and not much about height
like in Basketball. I think Manny has a fair
chance to beat dela Hoya why, because
Pacquiao has improved tremendously with the guidance of Roach. Fredie knows what he's talking about. In terms of power, speed and stamina Manny has the edge. Forget about the Maxican fans it's
time to put your money on our hero and
you'll get big return.

Pacquiao by knockout over dela Hoya.

I think Manny Pacquiao is in a win-win situation. If he wins, he has everything to gain plus another future mega-buck fight. I he lose, he goes home a billionaire, and may opt to fight smaller fighters. It will not tarnished his reputation since it is accepted that Dela Hoya is a bigger fighter.

I love Manny, i love how he fight, i love the excitement he brings in his every fight. But the fact that Dela Hoya is the bigger fighter, he can have his way of pushing Pacquiao if he wanted to. With Manny's defense, I think there's always a way for Dela Hoya to finish him. The Golden Boy will try his best to finish the fight as early as possible. The only chance for Manny is to improve his defense, use his speed to outbox Dela Hoya, and in the later rounds (when Dela Hoya should be tired, as what happened in his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.), he can use his own attack. If Dela Hoya comes in prepared, I believe he can knock Pacquiao if Manny decide to go toe-to-toe with him.
First few rounds will be decided by strategy, but later rounds will be decided by stamina. Dela hoya can win within 5rounds as he have said, but if Manny survives, our icon have a better chance.

You're no boxing genius alright, cuz Pac has already been defeated before. Get your facts straight.

Have you seen most Mike Tyson's fights? His fights where he knocked out foes 6 inches or more taller and much bigger than him? Yes, the arm reach(es) are much longer too. But with his quickness, power, and smart boxing he got the job done. Now, how come some people conclude right out that Pacman will be knocked out or lose the fight?

Honestly, I don't know what will happen. Both has their own skills and luck. The Golden Boy is not that too big to kill Pacman instantly. He can come in surging like hell but Pacman will defend and counter like anything if there's no way out or if he sees an open opportunity. I can see Pacman being aggressive to let GBoy know that he is in and not scared. But he will be careful and defensive.

But remember, GBoy may not survive once he got the one big hit followed by more punches. Tyson did it - killing guys much bigger than him. So, my point is, do not make the height and reach a big deal. Each has its own style, speed, and power. It will be anyone's fight. Do not praise anyone yet. Just wait and see what their pre-fights' media mouth and thoughts can show. It is going to be a good fight. Good luck to Pacquiao!

i don't care who wins.. anyway this is just another boxing "show" and for sure this will be very entertaining...

IF Pacquiao survived the first six rounds of the fight, it is possible for him to win the game either via tko or a unanimous decision.

its a big challenge to manny to fight with de la hoya, for me manny will win this fight bcoz of his speed and power. he has a winning attitude and strong determination. manny have faith in god and he believes in himself. lets all pray for manny's victory. good luck and god bless. for manny.

The longer the fight goes the better Manny's chances get. A KO against Oscar is highly improbable but he can wear him down for a possible TKO ala Morales. Once he works around closing the gap versus the jab Oscar will be hard pressed to parry the rushing combinations. As for the left hook im certain Roach had Manny practicing a swivel defense against it esp whenever he moves forward. The only way Pac gets hit flush is if he gets careless in between flurries.
I think Manny will fight carefully on the get go sizing up Oscar's reach and power- but expect him to become progressively aggressive once he gets around oscar's best punches.

If manny can survive n the first 6 rounds he has a chance to make it to the latter rounds but the golden boy will still prevail in the fight keeping the filipino boxer at bay with his jabs.Manny,s face could be a blooded mess.Anyway he (manny) has nothing to lose in this fight and hell go home with not less than 20 million dollars added to his account.

Am a true blooded filipino but I am now accepting reality that Manny will not pull this one.The reach and height discrepancy will be the key to this fight and obviously the Golden boy has the edge.If someone ask me to gamble then ill have to chose Oscar. The golden boy will just uses his long arms in jabbing manny to keep him at bay.Just ask any hardcore gambler and they will bet on the golden boy.But my heart still go on manny.Come sunday, manny face could be a bloody mess.

Defense is the key for Manny. Plus speed and he got a big chance.

GOOD LUCK TO MANNY!!!!AND MAY THE GOOD LORD BE AT YOUR SIDE ALWAYS AND PROTECT YOU ON YOUR FIGHT WITH DE LA HOYA. HAVE FAITH IN GOD AND YOU WIN THIS FIGHT WITH YOUR STRONG DETERMINATION AND YOU HAVE A WINNING ATTITUDE. THE FILIPINO PEOPLE IS PRAYING FOR YOUR SUCCESS AND TO WIN THIS FIGHT. IM VERY PROUD OF YOU AND MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS TOO.

Ayaw ni De lahoya na magkapalitan cla ng mukha ni Manny fo obvious reasons. The golden boy will uses his jab to keep manny at bay(Allen is correct).Sa tingin ko bugbug ang mukha ni manny dis sunday but definitely hindi sya ma knock-out.Chavit Singson had a keen to put his bet on the american-mexican warrior.

Just what happened to other mexican boxers who were all defeated by manny, we still believe pacquiao will convincingly win the fight by 12 rds UD. By employing diif offensive techniques with good defense, he can effectively employ his strategy againts Golden boy, we are awaiting and eager to view his fight live inside our camp this weekend.

I am hundred percent our very own Manny will give Oscar a humiliating defeat. His stamina, power, speed and faith to God will be his big weapons to defeat Oscar. My prediction in this fight,Oscar will kiss the canvas in 10th round and Manny will come home with full of jubilation.

Both are great fighters and great boxers. But they belong to a different division (weight class, if you will).

Pacquiao has all the qualities of a great boxer. Speed, power, will and determination to win. But let us be realistic.

Oscar is too much for Manny to handle. Manny's arsenal is not enough to defeat de la Hoya.

I am a Filipino and my heart goes out with Manny.

Let us hope and pray that Pacquiao will not sustain serious injuries for him to think of retiring.

If I have my way, I will stop this fight.

i agree w/ my katukayo boying. the fight should have been stopped. look at manny's face compared to oscar? another thing is, how come oscar gets to hospital compared to manny?! that's just too much! cummon! be fair!
