Why is So in Group C? Why not in Groups A or B?
waycool
it’s his first time to be invited in corus…next year he would be in group B because of his good performance..

So was bracketed in group C because when the invitation was extended to him I believe around 6 months or so ago, his ELO rating was below his present 2627. But the way he is playing lately, it is a possibility he may reach the 2700 level by early next year and he may be invited to join the elite group A. It’s also worth noting most of his wins came with the black pieces winning five and drawing two while winning 3 and drawing 2 with the white pieces.

Also Wesley’s final score is 9.5 points as he drew his last round with GM David Howel of England.

he was invited earlier & his elo rating at that time is 2577(8months ago when they sent the invitation to join 2009 corus group c).by the time his elo rating shoots up to 2627,all the invitations are already out.

Wesley So, 2009 corus chess champion with a score of 9.5/13.don’t worry Raul,he will be in group b next year or even group a.it’s up to the corus organizer if they upgrade wesley to group a.by the way wesley was invited to play at the 2009 aeroflot chess tournament in moscow to be held this month.from february 16 to 27.

When the invitation for him to play in the Corus 2009 was extended, his ELO rating was still below where it is now. As it stands now at over 2627, he could have easily played in group A. Nonetheless, his scintillating victory in Group C is no less spectacular. Mabuhay ka Wesley !

Congratulations to GM Wesley So. He is the champion of Group C (Corus Chess) in in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. The Filipino people will surely be proud of him.
He got a score of 9.5. Being the 7th youngest GM in Chess history, he will have a very bright future. May he become the inspiration of the Filipino young chess players.

It is very interesting to note that young Chess Players became Corus 2009 Champions. For Group A: Ukrainian 2706 KARJAKIN Sergey (18 years old); for Group B: Italian 2646 CARUANA Fabiano (16 years old); for Group C: Filipino 2627 SO Wesley (15 years old).
After Corus 2009, Wesley So ELO Rating will probably climb to 2686. That will easily qualify him to Group B next year. If he continues to do well in major tournaments before Corus 2010, he could even qualify for Group A and play against first rate chess players (cream of the crop) like Karjakin (2706 Ukraine) and Carlsen (2776 Norway).
Let us encourage our young Filipinos to play chess. Chess could be offered as one of the subjects in the primary and intermediate years. Filipinos can be great (brain-wise). Wesley has proven that!

Wesley can actually beat the group B Champion, he had beaten carucuana when he was just 11 years old in the world youth championship in Dubai (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=95915) and had drawn with Karjakin (http://karjakin.blogspot.com/2008/12/asian-club-cup-2008-4th-round.html) Champion of Group A, I think given the right support, we will have a world number 1 in Chess!! Mabuhay ang Pinoy,Matatalino at Magaling Manggulpi.:-0

Congratulations to GM Wesley So for the “so”perb performance! Hurray to all the Filipino chess geniuses. It is however unfortunate that not a single TV or radio news agency in the country carried this banner story, it is as if this remarkable performance of a Filipino is not worth a minute of airtime. Kakahiya kayo!!!
Pichay has done a lot to Philippine chess, but I think he should further encourage the support of the country’s big media outlets, because stories like this bring inspirations to a lot of Philippine chess hopefuls…

congratulation, and may you keep up the good work.kid.you are an inspiring model to the youth.

But Wesley needs a trainer(s) to improve his opening knowledge and experience. The present batch of chess prodigies have their own seconds/trainers to guide them as they move up the high levels of competition.
Wesley showed what he can do by himself. Imagine what he can do if his full potential is tapped.

Wesley So should be supported by Government; He is the future of Philippine Chess! He should be granted a foreign trainer preferably from Europe, in preparation for the World Junior Chess Tournament. I have a gut feeling that he will win this year edition of World Jr Chess Championship! God Bless You!

I hate to say this but i think inquirer was late in covering this news. Wesley had been the favorite in corus c since the beginning and his games were covered and commented by the chessdom.com since round 1. You have not shown any report until the final round where he emerged the group c winner.
Corus 2009 is very exciting to note that all groups were won by the young guns.
Karjakin -Caruana and Wesley So who are all in their teens. They defeated the likes of Kamsky and they are so young to be doing so.
