BALICASAG Island in Bohol is described as one of the best dive spots in the country with its protected marine sanctuary teeming with healthy corals. For non-divers, it is also a great place for snorkeling.
Last Saturday, I was part of a small group that ventured near Balicasag for dolphin watching. I did read about dolphins in Bohol although around nearby Pamilacan Island.
Anyway, one important lesson is to wake up early – early as in don’t wait for the sun to rise. Or rather, it pays to be at sea on sunrise because that’s mating time for dolphins.
We set out past 6AM and by the time we reached the area where the dolphins are, it was already swarming with many boats with the same idea.
As one colleague puts it, it was more like “dolphin chasing”, rather than watching. Each time dolphins were seen rising out of the water; it was like off to the races. And it just seemed to scare these poor creatures.
Fortunately, before we headed for home we did see dolphins - one more like twirling rather flipping out of the water. And just when we least we expected it, a whale shark passed by in front of our boat rousing our sleepy eyes.

there are protocols to follow in dolphin watching. I hope the Bohol dolphin watching operators will have one. we need to respect the dolphins and their habitat. Thus, chasing them is a big NO NO. there must be silence and the motor of the vessel has to be of a kind which does not disturb them. Dolphins are dependent on sound for food, reproduction, etc. Btw, 2009 is International Dolphin Year. Let us take care of them...
thanks gloria, very good insights. i personally felt a bit uneasy knowing how it must be for those poor creatures when people intrude their natural habitat
Dolphin chasing and over crowding of boats is one of our problems in the dolphin and whale watching industry here in Bohol. Notably, these have been committed by the "habal habal" boats in Alona Beach. Most of these boats are not registered with the MARINA. I noticed that none of the passengers wear life vest during your dolphin tour. Gloria is right, we have the dolphin and whale watching code of conduct and this has been followed in Pamilacan Island by the members of the Pamilacan Island Boat Operators and Spotters Association (PIBOSA).
Dolphins are spotted on the surface of the ocean mainly because of their necessity to breathe fresh air and when it’s playing time for them after their meal. The reason why we do the tour early in the morning because usually the sea is calm and after viewing the dolphins you will be going be either to Pamilacan Island or Balicasag Island for your swimming and snorkeling. On normal condition when the sea is calm we can also provide the dolphin tour in the afternoon.
BTW, the pods of dolphins on your video are the spinner dolphins.

One of the attractions of Bohol is the ability to go dolphin and whale watching on the Bohol Sea. Joselino "Jojo" Baritua runs a project in which former whale-hunters can still use their whale and dolphin spotting skills to earn a living, but now to guide tourists to the best spots for a meeting with those gentle giants and playful jokers of the sea. But remember to take off your Rolex Watches in case it falls into the sea.
