Sharp sees electronics sales growth in RP

MANDALUYONG City, Philippines – Anticipating a return of healthy buying power of Filipinos in 2009, Japanese electronics firm Sharp is setting out to strengthen their appliance sales in the country.

Sharp Philippines President and General Manager Kenjo Okunaka said in a press conference that they will be more aggressive in the coming months to offset much of the decline in consumer electronics purchases in the Philippines.

Okunaka will expand their sales and marketing to all economic segments though it aims to retain a strong market in the “A” to “upper-C” levels.

“We will be introducing different products to satisfy every type of household. We are expecting to remain strong in the coming year as Filipinos regain purchasing power,” Okunaka said.

Accenture: People are the ‘new technology’

MANILA, Philippines — In today’s age of knowledge-based economy, human resources are key to business success.

At the forefront of the dawn of the human resources era, business process outsourcing giant Accenture announced plans to deploy its human resources (HR) Academy program for the company’s analyst and specialist-level HR professionals in the Philippines.

Next to India, the Philippines is the second country where this program is being deployed among all of Accenture’s offices.

“The HR Academy is a critical enabler for the human resources industry,” said Rahul Varma, senior director of Accenture’s Human Resource Strategy unit. “We believe that HR talent is the number one key differentiator organizations must have to become future industry leaders.”

Yahoo! goes ‘open’ for web apps dev’t

MANILA, Philippines – Yahoo! Philippines launched September 30 the Yahoo! Open Strategy to rewire itself and open up its assets to third-party developers and help drive innovation and differentiation in terms of its products and services.

Yahoo! Open Strategy product management Cody Simms on the Yahoo! developer blog that the new initiative is “Yahoo!’s big bet to deliver open, industry-leading platforms that attract the most publishers and developers.”

Sau Sheong Chang, head of engineering of Yahoo! Southeast Asia explained during an interview with INQUIRER.net that the Y! Yahoo! Open Strategy “aims to marry the best of the Web with what Yahoo! has internally. This will provide a holistic and consolidated platform for developers to grow applications in the current Yahoo! backdrop.”

Oracle enters hardware business with HP

SAN Francisco, California — Oracle announced its entry in the storage and database hardware business with Hewlett Packard (HP) as partner, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said here at Oracle Open World.

Oracle will enter the storage server and database server market in hopes of providing a technology solution to the growing and complex database and storage demand from enterprises.

Working with computer company HP, Oracle expects to rival products of existing storage and database server players, Ellison said.

Intel to tech industry: Help reduce carbon footprint

SAN FRANCISCO, California — Talking to attendees of the Oracle Open World here, Intel Corp. President and CEO Paul Ottelini challenged the technology industry to help the energy industry embrace technology that could help reduce the global “carbon footprint.”

The Carbon footprint measures the impact of human activities on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced. It is measured in units of carbon dioxide.

Ottelini said Intel and other industry leaders like Oracle are now driving various initiatives to reduce energy consumption in the manufacture and the development of their products, as well as in the running of their operations.

The Intel chief executive said Intel has recently been able to save $2 billion in electricity as it implemented initiatives to reduce energy consumption.
