    De los Reyes Says:

NEWS: SC UPHOLDS NERI AGAIN ON EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE

Sen. Pimentel describes the SC decision as terrible and unreasonable. Sen. Escudero calls the ruling erroneous. These all-knowing self-righteous oppositionists think they are better than the Supreme Court. Anyone who disagrees with them is wrong. What conceit.

But Sen. Francis Escudero called the ruling “erroneous” as it would embolden corrupt officials.
“This is a dark day for constitutionalists and our legal system,” Escudero said.
    ******************************
Who are you to question the collective wisdom of the Supreme Court?
The problem with our senators is, they don’t accept that Supreme Court is right and the Senate is wrong.
Dark day for legal system; this kind of pronouncement creates a bad image that everything is not right in our system.
Just for the sake of talking, they talk even nonsense.
Be sport, be gentlemen and be honorable. You, senators are called honorable and should act like one.
Our senators occupy public position that requires decency and respect and they should lead the way.
They should not indulge in cheap talk but should be statesmen.
Dark day for our legal system, I don’t think so… Dark night maybe.

    Lil Roble Says:

‘Some make fun of his accent, traces of which can be detected if you listen closely enough.’

The quote above is from Eric Caruncho’s Arnel Pineda: The Journeyman’s Tale. A silly remark that ruins an otherwise intelligent article. My immediate reaction to Arnel having an accent is, ‘well who doesn’t?’

What does Caruncho expect since Arnel is not an American and not born into American English? Why shouldn’t he try singing or just talking in English himself for his own accent to come out(and for us to say, yeah, it’s really there).

English is an international language and everybody will have his/her own accent of it, including varieties of American accents. The accent in Chicago is different from that of New York and definitely different from that of Alabama and Louisiana. The English, the inventors of the language even have varieties of it. The Beatles’ Liverpool accent is very evident for instance and they sound differently from English pop icon Elton John, who’s raised in the London area.

So the issue is not whether Arnel sings with an accent or not. Because everybody has one. The issue becomes racist when people raise it (and many do) in regard to Arnel but not with other Western artists like Pavarotti and ABBA, both of whom also sang in English, the latter mainly so. But they are accented too, and it’s not American. Personally I don’t care because they’re great artists and accent doesn’t bother me.

The implication of the position of some rabid Steve Perry fans on Arnel’s accent is clear. Arnel does not sound American (of whatever variety) enough. His accent is not the acceptable. If he Arnel were Spanish (like Antonio Banderas) it would be ok since he’s white. Of course there are American fans of Journey who are more enlightened, or at least not as narrow-minded who, while acknowledging Arnel’s accent (after someone raised the issue) but are not bothered by it at all and in fact some go on to castigate those who raise the issue for being racist. Most of this type of fans have embraced Arnel, some even prefering him to Steve Perry, while there are also those who prefer Steve Perry for reasons that are not racist.

As a Filipino living in the States I always challenge any remark that smacks of racism. Something most Filipinos, especially the first generation immigrants, simply pass.

For Mr. Caruncho to confirm that Arnel indeed has an accent is downright silly. It’s like saying ’some make an issue of Nora Aunor’s mole on her cheek, which is really visible if you look more closely.’ Mr Caruncho unwittingly endorses what is otherwise a non-issue, considering the realities of English as an international language.

Finally, while Arnel indeed sings not with a American accent, his diction/enunciation of words is excellent, and even clearer than those of some Americans, like Sylvester Stallone.

    jun arago Says:

Arroyo’s ‘militarist solution’ to Mindanao conflict hit.
    **********************************

When peace was at the table, opponents find it distasteful for MILF to have their own place to cook, that’s why MOA was thrown as trash and garbage.
When military is used to stabilize some area in mindanao from random killings of disgruntled muslim brothers who cannot have their own ancestral domain, our distinguished legislators are howling protest of DDR.
It is funny how our congressmen and senators are….
They are like lions waiting in stealth to attack, they are like fishermen trying to size the sea of calm and rough before catching fish.
In short, they are in waiting game. They just wait and wait, pulsing the public opinion before they launch their attack on its prey… of course GMA
Can our lawmakers have their own idea to put into law and not just wait and watch on GMA?
If they think they have solution to mindanao problems, then introduce a bill and put them into effect instead of criticisms and accusations.
Our honorable congressmen and senators are like wind in the storm, pahangin lang ang dating, at pag may hangin, flip flop ang isip.
In short, sala sa laming, sala sa init.

    Tolits Says:

I feel so sad to know that Mang Pandoy died a pauper. His life should have changed in 1992 when he moved closer to the to no less than the President of the Philippines as he was made to represent the face of the country’s poor.

By logic, his particular and personal case should have drawn the attention of those who have more in life to give him some hope of having a good life as others have. But no, all he got are purely “pakitang tao” from those that can offer him good quality of life suitable to an ordinary man like us. A means of livelihood should had been granted to him for charity that may be, he will not die with tuberculosis or he is still happily alive today.

How many more Mang Pandoys’ do we have in our midst today? Are the Filipinos doomed to follow his fate? I shed tears to what happened to him because I saw myself in him.
