SENATOR Juan Ponce Enrile called his Sigma Rho brods “trainers of thugs and killers.” Former UP prexy Nemenzo, a Sigma Rhoan, condemned the culture of violence cultivated by fraternities. Former Senate president Jovito Salonga threatened to break his ties with Sigma Rho if the latter is proven to be responsible for the death of Cris Mendez.
Yet [Iloilo] Vice Gov. Rolex Suplico, in deadpan fashion, dismissively opined that “there is no concrete evidence that the death of the UP student (Cris Mendez) was caused by the fraternity’s initiation rites.” Such a cold, cold heart.
The vice governor just put his foot where his mouth is.

What would you expect of people like Suplico. Fraternities doesnt make criminals is the members that makes fraternities looks like gangs. Even in the sense of brotherhood, there is always individuality (barbaric) among the brods that ruins the true essence of brotherhood. And Suplico is one rotten tomatoe.

Until Suplico’s son suffer the same fate in the hands of a “brother”, he will never feel the pain of a grieving mother. Not until he sees his wife grieving for their son, Suplico wont be able to feel how is it to be robbed of a son, precious to all mothers since the moment he was born, cared and nurtured at her utmost, even giving her own life if need be. Let Suplico revel on his intelligent argument. Let him orate and show us all how smart his argument in defense of his revered Sigma Rhoan brothers. Yes, there wasn’t any evidence linking frat bros as the killers of Mendez…
One can only wonder how Suplico’s mother feel when she reads her son’s pronouncements.

Our right to believe is an inherent right, it is protected by our constitution, and we are taught to respect each other’s beliefs no matter how outrageous, no matter how crazy. Some believe in God, some don’t..Some join organizations, fraternities, or sororities which they believe would help them make a difference. The initiation rites in these organizations have always been symbolic and if something unfortunate happens, it could be a combination of factors. Evidence that can be used to convict a person beyond reasonable doubt is what is needed, not speculations. It is not right to assume that all fraternities or sororities espouse a culture of violence. Violent thoughts, reactions, and unfounded accusations, these are what breeds a culture of violence.

Suplico is just laying the groundwork for an alibi and a scenario to extricate his brods from the mess that they are in now.
Sigma Rhoans are known to be or they perceive themselves to be “macho” in UP. Now, if they really have the balls, just come out and face the music and be MEN.
We don’t need Sigma Rhoans like Suplico to mislead the public in what is a very obvious case of HAZING and death. The entire UP Community is again tainted with
with blood and all Suplico can do is turn a blind eye and defend at all cost his brods. This is not brotherhood that he’s espousing. One can only wonder if Sigma Rho has now evolved into a MOB with Suplico acting as the consigliere while the young Corleones are in hiding. Dangerous times for UP if that’s the case.

Pag may namamatay na hazing sa ibang university the case were not publicized by the media, pero pag sa UP it is selling like hotcakes, anong meron dyan sa UP na yan, dahil ba yan ay gina gastusan ng government.
nemenzo is not a member of sigma rho…

mark,
Actually there was … Lenny Villa a neophyte of Aquila Legis, a fraternity in the Ateneo de Manila University Law School was also well publicized.
Check out what happened so far with this frat-hazing death case:
Déjà vu for Lenny Villa’s ma

TIAONG, Quezon — For Gerarda Villa, the mother of another hazing victim who died 16 years ago, the sight of the lifeless and battered body of UP senior student Cris Anthony Mendez was one painful déjà vu.
“They have the same chronology of events. Their badly beaten bodies were both brought to the hospital by three vehicles which then hurriedly left. Based on news accounts, I can say I again experienced the death of Lenny,” Villa, president of the Crusade Against Violence (CAV), told the Inquirer in an interview at the Mendez house in Barangay Talisay on Saturday.
Villa’s son Lenny was a neophyte of Aquila Legis, a fraternity in the Ateneo de Manila University Law School, who died after three days of bloody hazing rites in February 1991.
Lenny, a first year Ateneo student, died of serious physical injuries at the Chinese General Hospital where he was rushed.
Villa said they won the case in the lower court against 26 members of the Aquila Legis but it was overturned by the Court of Appeals. The case is now with the Supreme Court.
“Every time there’s a hazing victim, my heart bleeds in grief. I remember my son. It’s really lonely,” Villa said.
“What else should we do? We’ve already exerted all efforts to stop this hazing practice but it seems our labors are not enough. I’m afraid that I would not be able to see the fruits of our campaign to totally stop hazing,” she added.
But Mendez family members believed that the 21-year-old graduating UP student was not a hazing victim.
“The family could not share the belief that Cris died from hazing. He wouldn’t engage himself in such group. Besides, he did not mention anything about fraternity when he was still alive,” said village chair Pedro Panopio, who spoke in behalf of the family.
Panopio hinted that Cris could have been a victim of a free-for-all mauling because of the presence of fatal injuries in different parts of his body.
During the interview, Cris’ mother, Cristina Garcia Mendez, declined to answer questions and just silently sat beside the casket of her son.

Joining a fraternity during the early days was an honor. Members were selected based on their good character and intellectual capacity. Battles were in the form of debates ,sports and exams. As for today, fraternities are just sugarcoated gang. Members are students who just want to bum around. they do not want to study so they influence other students to share their rotten ideas.

Got this from another discussion thread. For whatever legal purpose it may be serve.

It is awful to think that this is a Law-based fraternity that the government is dealing with & the Sigma Rhoans are doing their best to cover-up this homicide (O is there murder?). We can just imagine what these young thugs are going to be like when they become full-fledged lawyers. Criminals within the legal system.
Is this one of the reasons why our legal system is so corrupt? We have individuals inside the four corners of the courts who are more guilty than the people they are defending or prosecuting? Or judging?
One can just feel nauseaous at Suplico’s statement. This indeed is going to be the battlefront that Sigma Rho is going to fight in. What is the evidence that the fraternity was responsible for Cris’s death? Judging by the amount of legal firepower & luminaries behind the fraternity, any slight misstep by the prosecution could lead into the collapse of a court case.
Hazing should be banned & erring organizations should not only have their members expelled from schools but also prosecuted for a criminal offense. It resulted to a death, afterall. Sadly, hazing is an integral part of these kinds of organizations. Thus, I would stand for the abolition of frats & soros. It is just another elitist way of people grouping together & a very lame way for yourself to get a job in the future. That is why risking death a lot of people still willingly undergo hazing.
Hazing is never truly safe. While some frats would limit this to the thighs & shoulders or chest maybe, some are more daring & would go for the abdomen & the lower back. The abdo & lower back are where some of our vital organs are. Strong as it may look, the lower back is where your kidneys are located. Hit them & you could easily cause internal bleeding.
Too much force can cause ribs to fracture & puncture the lungs. “Too much” is of course subjective to the neophyte’s ability to endure punishment. But how would we know? Repeated paddling of the back of the thighs or the calf areas can cause massive haematomas which could cause a blood clot to travel upstream & fatally lodge in the heart. Ever heard of blood clots from the legs which killed airline passengers in long-haul flights? This is even whithout direct trauma to the legs.
A lot of “accidents” can happen during initiation rites. You may, yourself, not intend to harm neophytes too much but there are loads of you who take turns to beat initiates into fraternal submission. You can’t control how much punishment a neophyte can have. And of course the classic “napag-initan”? If brods don’t have the right vibes on you, chances are they will make sure you get the toughest ordeal of the batch.
There’s simply too much risk doing hazing. You could end a life together with yours. Which is one of the reasons why I decided to do away with frats after I joined one when I was too young to know what I was doing. I joined one to belong. Now I have a successful career & the only person I depended on was God.
An unsolicited advise to Cris’s family, once UP or the QC police or the NBI says that the Sigma Rho frat was responsible for Cris’s death make noise through the media. The strength of the Sigma Rho, being a law-based frat, in our legal system is way too strong. Don’t leave it to the courts to chase after the guilty. Make them look so bad to the public that they will suffer in due course. Especially the politician-brods who speak for the frat.
Needless to say, I am with you in your grief over the departure of a promising, bright young mind.

what can you expect from a hardcore tradpol like sulpico but to grandstand on any issue that will earn him some media mileage. one morning he is on tv lambasting abalos and now here he goes with some comments that only add more pain to the family of cris mendez. pumunta ka na lang sa hong kong at mamili ka ng fake rolex watches para pangregalo sa mga ka frat mo.

I feel sorry for the family of Chris Mendez. With the influence of Sigma Rho, being a law based fraternity they can make the case take a very long road. Probably Chris Mendez parents will no longer be around and yet the case is still not resolved. I wont be surprise if somebody will call for an EYE FOR AN EYE type of justice. Anyway thats what fraternities is all about, SHARING,,, share the fun and share the deaths.

Dennis, your observation that fraternities today are sugarcoated gangs and bums is not entirely right. There are FRATERNITIES especially in UP and there are merely gangs. Most frats in UP adhere strictly to academic and extracurricular exellence. In fact, most student leaders of old and today are members of fraternities. We are highly competitive individuals who happen to share a vision and found the fulfillment of our desires in the fraternity.
Let us not delude ourselves in believing that all fratmen are perfect. There will be some who manage to get in but did not live up to the ideals but they are few and far between. In UP alone, you might want to know that millions of pesos have been donated by the alumni members of different fraternities in projects and improvements.
If you are a student of UP, i suggest that you visit the Palma Hall and see for yourself the room renovations courtesy of the frats that you malign. We are rational people and not the bums that you paint us to be.

Now I will be treading on dangerous ground. To those who may want to ostracize me for this, go on, you are welcome. I can’t understand this phenomenon of fraternity, and all it’s accompanying by-products; hazing, torture, mauling, deaths, complaints and accusations, and clamor, when death occurs, as in this present case, etc., all also a phenomenon by itself. Fraternity, and hazing, and the resulting deaths, are with us for centuries, and yet, everytime some untowards incident happened such as the death of a member due to hazing, we reacted with the same phenomenal manner everytime, as if it’s the first time we’ve heard of such thing happening. Members of fraternities are not the idiot kinds, they are fully aware of the consequencies of joining the organization, they know it could lead to death, and to death, like lemmings, many of them have suffered indeed. And yet, the throng continues it’s beeline, some to their inevitable doom, as always. And then we heard again the same clamor for justice, the same complaint, the same accusations, even the same advocacy to ban fraternity organizations, over and over and over again, as during the first time. Nothing happened, and the same story repeated. Tomorrow is another day, like the sun rising in the morning, I could foresee the headlines bannering the same old, old story again….ho-hum.

Matagal pa sa society natin bago dumating ‘yung time na di na makakalusot ang ganitong incidents. Although may development compared to other hazing cases. Senior members of the fraternity are speaking against the rotten apples. May naidulot din ang infomation age…

Sen. Enrile hit it right on the head when he said that the Sigma Rho has become a trainer of thugs and killers. I was in UP during the 70’s and this fraternity has always been involved in violent rumbles and hazings. The members of this fraternity should be ashamed of what this group has become. They shouldn’t cover up for their brods who were responsible for Cris Mendez’s death…instead be true “Seekers of the Right” and let justice prevail.

Pres Nemenzo is not a SigmaRhoan. Pls get your facts right before posting.

I offer my deepest sympathy to the family of Cris Mendez, may he rest in peace! But I must express my sincerest opinion that an action of one or two members does not make the whole Sigma Rho Fraternity responsible for the death of Cris. Just like a group of Filipino Abu Sayaf beheading a foreign national hostage does not make all filipinos murderer. I appeal for sobriety and wait for the result of thorough investigation. In the end, I believe justice will prevail. Amen!

Unless and until the members of the frat responsible for the death of Cris will start to come out in the open and tell their story and face the accusations against them, the said fraternity has no right to continue to exist nor their leaders continue to remain as leaders and members thereof.
mote
The Grand Archon must declare that the members responsible for the death of Cris must come out in the open, surrender to the proper authoriity and face the charges. “The Word of the Grand Archon is Law.” Those responsible must follow lest they cannot be considered as disciplined members unless the Grand Archon’s WORD is not respected by these members.

the so called “tough fratmen” of this fraternity are not tough after all. snivelling weasels is a more apt name for these cowards. why havent the police the nbi moved to pick up these wastes yet? ni anino wala silang makuha samantalang maliwanag pa sa sikat ng araw kung sino ang mga suspek.
dapat lahat ng current members ng sigma rho na yan i round up at isa isang pakantahin sa karaoke ng mga pulis at nbi. wag sabihin ng mga ito na ang kasalanan ng isa o dalawa ay di kasalanan ng frat. its the other way around, ang kasalanan ng isang fratman ay pananagutan ng buong organisasyon.

Fraternities should reflect the positive side of the brotherhood of mankind. Now they reflect the evil tribalism of man.
If they create pain, suffering and death for the sake of “Loyalty”, fraternities should dissolve themselves and rather be part of the larger positive brotherhood of man. No tribes, no bigotry, no one boasting of ones superiority nor grovel in inferiority.
They should leave their “Big Cojones mentality” and rather create organizations geared to help the less fortunate of mankind or create something that positively adds to this world, that way humanity would applaud them rather than ignominiously hissed down and condemned.
CLEAN UP YOUR ACT … and this message is for ALL FRATERNITIES and SORORITIES out there where a many embrace the thug, decadent and sometimes even rapist, bully and criminal mentality. If you cannot remove this TRIBAL, TORTURE, ABUSIVE AND DOMINANCE TYPE SUBCULTURE better dissolve your fraternity and become a public service oriented organization instead … or none at all!

they say fraternity means brotherhood or the other term for brotherhood, if we say that you are a brother to me, does that mean i have 2 beat you for you to become my brother? isnt it that if we are bothers we should love one another and care for them why do we have to beat them?
danilo macapili
being a fratman myself makes me pissed of these murderers are still on the loose with no suspects captured whatsoever. while i dont deny we had some sort of initiation for neophytes(which i also went through), it was meant for them to take the fraternity seriously, and not to a point of killing them. these sigma rho definitely went over the line, and now are hiding under their parents and probably senior members clouts.
ill be proud if i could bring some justice to cris.
I,myself
This kind of case will really be just like a rug!!!
Non-sense! Non-sense!
No justice! No fairness!
That’s the new rule of our government today…Actually, pity had came into my mind when i accidentally watched the news about cris mendez.
Because I know,it’ll turn into nothing…just nothing…
I hope that our government may do something for it.
Godspeed to the soul and to the family of cris mendez…

Sinabi nila na ang Fraternity ay dapat na i abolish. Actually, di natin makukuha na iabolish ang fraternity simply becoz, yan ay isang tradition ng mga Universities within and outside Metro Manila. Maaari siguro nating sabihin na ‘change’ but not ‘abolish’. And besides, the real essence of Fraternity is brotherhood. Its just ‘hazing’ ung nagdadala ng bad image sa fraternity. So, instead na fraternity ung iabolish, ‘hazing’ rather ung dapat. Becoz there are some frat org na may mabuting nagagawa for the people of their own school.
Well, its just my opinion coz kung ako ang tatanungin, im a ‘pro frat’, ‘anti hazing’ student.

“Kiackazzmomma” was right. Until Suplico’s son, grandson or someone dear to his heart suffers the same fate as Cris Mendez, he will never realize the pain of Cris’ mom. But of course, this will be far from being true. Those evil fratmen will not dare inflict physical pain that may cause death to the son of some rich bitch. Malas ang batang Cris kasi poor siya. Kung nangyari iyan sa kamag-anak ni Suplico, kahit pa Sigma Rhoan sila, magtago na sila sa mga sinapupunan ng nagpanganak sa kanila.

why is it so hard to flush out those responsible for this mess? if the sigma rho fraternity wants to re-establish their integrity, they should help in solving this crime. vice gov. suplico, shut up!! if you don’t have anything useful to share, just shut the f&*# up!!
