THERE was collective outrage among bloggers with the Malu Fernandez controversy. There was collective outrage among Fil-Ams at the racist statement from “Desperate Housewives.” Today, we are confronted by a much, much more despicable incident but where is the outrage?
The opposition is and will bleed the issue for their selfish motives. The commentators and opinion writers are having a heyday making various spins and interpretations with Fr. Panlilio’s expose. But where is the outrage?
Definitely, it is not only the few who have spoken that received a paper bag with bundles of money. An ABS-CBN video footage showed other politicians carrying similar bags. The rest may deny getting any money but it won’t change the fact that public perception is that they indeed got money. Delicadeza is alien to them. Garapalan is the name of the game. But still, where is the outrage?
Why are we not out in the streets demanding explanations and even making calls for resignation? Why do we go on with our lives as if this suhulan is just a normal incident? Why is there no collective outrage? No, I am not calling for people power. I am merely asking why have we become so meek and numb as a people in spite of the endless political scandals that confront us everyday.
The suhulan did not really come as a surprise. The suprise is when somebody, thanks to Fr. Panlilio, finally came out to expose the incident. (I am quite disappointed with Gov. Grace Padaca when she claimed on the news that she got a Christmas card from the GMA with P50, 000 but never came out to expose this gift giving incident at the time.) Corruption has become a way of life in our country. We know it happens. It is the P500, 000 that Fr. Panlilio showed to media that gave corruption a “face.”
In his column, Jose Ma. Montelibano said, “Nation building is character building.” Precisely. And that is my personal advocacy. Call it character building, value formation, good citizenship. If there is no collective change in our attitude and ways as a people, we will remain unaffected by the corrupt practices we see and hear everywhere. It is not really surprising why there is no collective outrage with regards to this blatant suhulan in Malacañang.

Hopefully the U.S. economy will collapse, and America will no longer influence the world the way it does with it’s garbage culture. When the U.S. economic depression takes the rest of the world with it, OFWs will have to come home. Without money and hope of jobs overseas, Filipinos will finally have to put away it’s obsession with materialism, showing off and being imitation Americans. We will have to be introspective and re-evaluate ourselves. I hope we will find ourselves and finally start to solve our problems OURSELVES. Let change come, let us move on into a bright future with our King, Jesus Christ leading the way.

I just read some sad stories on this site. The little girl in Mindanao who committed suicide and the caregiver who was possibly murdered in saudi arabia. Where is the outrage over the terrible things that are happening to our people both within the Philippines and overseas? When Desperate Housewives disrespected our doctors there was outrage from Filipinos from all over the world. When a U.S. Marine raped a Filipina there were mass demonstrations. But when two of our Kababayan nurses get raped in godless saudi arabia, not a peep from anyone. Is it easier to protest against a democratic nation? Stand up Filipinos and fight for your rights. Fight for your honor and dignity. Let’s all pitch in to save our country, the country that God blessed us with. Why are Filipinos seeking work in dangerous, godless countries? Is it that bad in the Philippines? Or are some of us just plain stupid? We can make our country work, but in order to do that, we need to change our values and attitudes. Filipinos can and will achieve success just like our neighbors in Asia. We all just need an attitude change and Biblical values, all of us from the tricycle driver, the OFW in Hong Kong, the successful expatriate in America, all the way up to the Congress and Presidency. Put away tsismis, istambay, foriegner worship, star worship, love of entertainment and taking the easy way out. Let their be a time when all of us can come home to the Philippines, and none of us would ever have to leave. God gave us our country and each other. That’s all we need. Glory to God, and His Son Jesus Christ. May he grant favor upon the Philippines, and may He Himself come down from Heaven and rule our country.

carlos,
i look at the glorietta bombing from a different angle. i don’t see it as an expression of outrage. my suspicion is that it was perpetrated by those who want to deflect attention. with the bombing, the suhulan is no longer news. the bombing will be the center of the news in the coming days. the suhulan will simply become one of those, at thing of the past just like the hello garci scandal, the fertilizer scam, the overpriced diosdado macapagal highway, the jose pidal expose, the nbn deal, etc. there never was any closure for all of these scandals. the reason why GMA is still in malacanang. the senate may conduct its investigation but public interest has waned by that time. i doubt it very much if the investigators can come up with a conclusive closure with this bombing incident. Oh God, i hope my suspicions are wrong.

Actually, I am so outraged.
Nothing can describe the feeling of anger and disgust that I feel right now for the lady in Malacanang. First, because I expect more from her morally, because she is a mother, a lady and head of the country at that.
How do I channel my seething hatred for these hooligans converging at Malacanang? I can only gnash my teeth! Sometimes I wish I had the magical powers to snatch the souls of these hoodlums reigning over our government and put them inside a bottle and bury them underground…but I do not have.
What I fear is, if i march to the street and suceed in ousting these pretenders to the throne, who will take over? I am scared that we will get the same manipulators who will steal it away from us. Remember Gloria? She was a fence sitter playing it safely on the sideline until there was a chance to grab the the seat in Malacanang.

The Malu Fernandez article and the Desperate Housewives slur were very easy targets of our outrage. The two incidents were easy to pick apart, easy to understand, easy to solve.
Deep-rooted corruption is not. Where do we even begin? You know what happens when someone gets pulled over for a traffic violation on the streets of Metro Manila. The difference is in scale and magnitude, but it boils down to the same thing. If we can’t muster the collective outrage—and modify our behavior—for something small, there’s no reason to expect that we can even begin to tackle what’s going on in Malacañang.

Its hard to believe these people got piss off of small thing like desperate housewife statement in television. But they never say anything about the corruption that has been going on under the stolen administration of Gloria Arroyo.
No wonder the Philippines going down the gutter and you’re all going down with it. All they care about is the statement on television which is no big deal. its only a movie! I can careless! But, I do care about the taxespayer’s money that has been plunder by the corrupt goverment of this bugos President of cebu. Mabuhay si Mrs. Pidal’s.

Where is the outrage? Nowhere…..the people knows when to….”vox populi”. It means the people knows WHO to believe (who’s talking?) and WHAT is there to believe (is there evidence?). Sinong lolokohin nyo? Are accusations simple enough to create outrage? PEOPLE KNOWS WHEN TO STAGE A PEOPLE POWER!
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:31 am
I believe the reason why there is no outrage
is because the Filipino people are already accustomed to bribery especially during election time wherein majority received money from politicians. All of us are sinners and guilty of corruption and the only solution to this is we need to truly repent of our sins and humbly ask for Gods forgiveness
and follow the path of righteousness in Christ Jesus.

if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. translation: kung di mo na kaya sa pilipinas, mag migrate ka na lang sa ibang bansa. otherwise, don’t insinuate rebellion. just leave alone the people who just want to live their lives away from your useless politics, selfish motives, paranoia, & messaianic complex.
October 22nd, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Outrage is not always the best action.
I do not approve of bribery as I do not approve of abortion and death penalty. I understand if some people will march on the streets and denounce the government’s long practice of corruption. Nothing is new, but something must change. Yes, even the way we handle problems like this.
I chose to talk about this problem with my friends, with teachers, principals, and parents who participated in my seminars. We tried to look for ways so our future leaders will not be committing the same mistakes of our leaders today.
I salute those who spend their time educating us about the corruption of our government. We need them. And I also salute those who are spending their time in finding ways to give hope to others through education.
There are many ways of protests. Most of them are not done in the streets.

Don’t expect more outrage boiling over. People have been bombarded by inuendos everyday. They are already numb to what is happening because this is everyday fair. You are just one of those boys/girls who cried wolf. Shoot first before you investigate the truth. React already because there is smoke so there is fire. Little did you know that its just carbon ice to cool the ice cream. More so are the clergies who trumpet the “truth” about their lies and immorality. Who would believe them when they themselves can not clean their own backyard. Hipocrites on robes. This should make your blood boil because they pontificate cleanliness when they are as filthy as “ERAP”.
October 20th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
Of course the outrage is defeaning. From whom?
From the oppositionists and leftist politicos who salivate to replace the present palace occupant so that they get their turn to have access to public coffers; from the closet-politician bishops whose ranks include a sexual molester and gambling money beneficiaries; from the hysterical media that presents rumors as facts from unnamed sources kuno; from coup plotters whose messianic complex they couldn’t seem to shake off.
Frankly, there is outrage among the people. But we’d rather keep it to ourselves and go on with our daily lives. We do not trust anyone anymore, neither the accused nor the accusers. Pots and kettles calling each other black. We’d rather watch these endless moro moro from the sidelines.

The feelings of apathy by the filipino people towards the “suhulan” is a concrete example that we have accepted corruption as a part of our way of life. This has been going on for decades but it is only now that it has been exposed so blatantly by a person of the cloth. The Filipino people are an amoral people. The moral ambiguities that we are bombarded have greyed the lines between black and white. It is in fact a dull gray. Morality nowadays depends on whether they could sleep at night soundly without any bother to their conscience is no more. It is whether the sleepless nights brought by their troubled conscience is compensated by the fact that when they awake their bank accounts and their wallets are thicker than the day before.

You sound like your ‘holier than thou” bishops asking the president to step down.I can’t believe the hatred this men in sheep clothes have been spewing into atmosphere.
You believe, hook, line and sinker, all these critical media bring out. When you watch TV,hear radio and read about events, please digest, some stories like food can cause you bum stomach.
Don’t be a fool, pinoy.People do not get outrage from hearsays and self-styled whistleblowers who discovered themselves instant celebrities when media cameras starts rolling.
Tell your priest from Pampanga to return the money to the Bulacan governor giver and let him worry to find the original source.
This is the simplest thing to do except that ,maybe your priest wanted more photo ops!

That greatness and strength of a nation lies in the integrity of its citizens.
Too much corruption in stewarding funds and too much media publicity characterized a typical scenario in this country to an unprecedented degree. So under that, we cannot expect “glory and grandeur” in the Philippines for some considerable generations until such a working formula to root out these carnal sins be discovered.
The filipinos might be the sought after workers in all the world, though individually. But under a nation building collective teamwork, that’s when self-promotion and self-advancement derailed the overall concept.

The public outrage is there. Feel the public pulse in those surveys, the text messages from radio listeners and TV audiences condemning the scandals in the administration. Aren’t all these the reason why the popularity of the president has gone down to its lowest depths? But, why is there no street protest to show public outrage? There won’t be any because the so-called organized NGOs for social and political change that are initiating public demonstrations against the government have opened themselves to dubious and suspicious motives. One such organization is the Black & White Movement. Some of its members are supposed to be people of high integrity who fought the scoundrels Marcos and Erap. Many initially supported the group but were discouraged and later withdrew when the BWM joined forces with the Erap, the communist leftist groups, and military coup plotters in a common cause to bring down GMA. The people have wised up already and know that this kind of conspiracy will only lead to a far worse political problem for the country that may lead to a junta government that’s why there are no takers. People are asking, why can’t the BWM do it alone and stay away from the infuence of the communist left and military adventurists?
The people have learned the lessons of Edsa I and II. If the president has to go, it has to be through the constitutional process. If she cannot be impeached, the people are prepared to wait till the president’s term expires in 2010. These NGOs will then have the opportunity to bring the president to court to answer for the abuses and criminal acts attributed to her.
The pubic outrage is present, but the people are hardly interested in joining those whose motives are highly questionable in bringing down a constitutional government.
October 20th, 2007 at 6:43 am
why asking for the outrage? the people is fed up of the politicians who is only after for their own interests. we ousted the dictator Marcos in edsa 1 but did his successors improved our lives? they claimed that they are clean but are they? then we unseat Erap in edsa 2 hoping for the change the second time around but still here we are. if we oust Gloria, who do you think will replace her? the opposition? are they credible to handle the country? all of them has in anyway have connections in the past? will the people trust these men or women? then you are asking for the outrage? i am telling you that i’ve been in edsa 1 & 2 but now i will not go to edsa 4,5,6 etc. anymore. i wish to God all these politicians who are claiming they are clean to die. i wish to God all corrupt government officials to die. then and only then that the outrage of the people is vindicated.
October 20th, 2007 at 1:04 am
Nobody knows yet what really happened and why. Disgruntled military? Not much to believ because what coldthey get from? MILF or Abu Sayyaf? Would really they just kill innocent people instead of bombing something that hurts the governmentr direct? Government’s hand, for to divert public attention from the bribery issue? Who knows. But there is one problem: It is not the first time that something happened when the administrationhad similartrouble. But could this really help? Always there is the risky matter that it could be found out and then the trouble could be a final one.
Let us hope there is a real, not confidential, investigation and not by a party which is accused. If there have been traces of C4, a military explosive, then there sreason more than enough to look deep into the matter.

Don’t be in a hurry, pinoy, the cauldron is still boiling, keep your patience, let it simmer for a little while more, the cook near the Pasig river is still stoking the fire with some additional firewood to hasten the cooking of more broth to whet the ensatiable appetite. So, be patient but hold your breath. When the heat is sufficient enough that the cauldron explode, that’s it.

OH PLEASE…. FEEL IT… IF YOU OPEN YOUR EARS AND CLOSE YOUR MOUTH FOR A SECOND…. YOU MAY SENSE THE OUTRAGE! FOR ONE, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE CAUSE OF THE BOMBING OF GLORIETTA WHICH AT LAST COUNT HAS EIGHT (8) DEAD AND OVER A HUNDRED (100)HURT. ISN’T IT A MANIFESTATION OF THIS OUTRAGE? THE CURRENT TRIAL OF THE MARINE GENERALS AND OTHER OFFICERS WHICH IS GETTING VERY CONFRONTATIONAL; LET’S PRAY AS WE WATCH OUT. ITS END RESULT MAY BE MORE THAN THE OUTRAGE YOU CAN ASK FOR. THE CALL OF THE CBCP ON THE GOVERNMENT’S MORAL BANKRUPTCY; LET’S PRAY AND WATCH OUT CLOSELY AGAIN…. IT MAY AGAIN END UP WITH MORE THAN THE OUTRAGE YOU CAN BARGAIN FOR. IF GOING TO THE STREETS IS YOUR DEFINITION OF OUTRAGE; IT IS DIME A DOZEN. BUT IF THE MILITARY AND THE LAIETY SPEARHEADED BY THE BISHOPS START TO BE ON THE STREETS… MAY GOD FORBID WHAT END RESULT IT MIGHT BRING. SO…. OH PLEASE START BEING SENSITIVE AND BE MORE PRUDENT IN “BANGING THE GONGS”. YOU MIGHT GET WHAT YOU ASK FOR AND MUCH MORE. AT THIS TIME LET US PRAY THAT THE WISDOM OF MORALITY AND INTELLECT PREVAIL FOR LESS CALAMITOUS RESULTS FOR OUR CITIZENS AND COUNTRY’S SAKE.
