Presidential pardon to Erap a slap to the Filipino people

| 93 Comments | No TrackBacks
THE EXECUTIVE clemency or presidential pardon granted by GMA to former president Estrada is the latest among the litany of blatant abuse of power and disrespect to the Filipino people she and her administration has done to our country. No wonder Filipinos find it hard to get our much deserved respect. If we don't respect our own law, why would others do? Why did the Americans refuse to turn over Subic rape case convict Smith to Philippine authorities? Why can an American TV program and company openly insult Philippine medical school graduates? [Why can authorities in different countries] arrogantly accuse our OFWs of any conceivable crime, etc.? Because our own so-called leaders or vultures in disguise are showing to the world how we are supposed to be treated. It's pathetic how the individual efforts Filipinos are doing to gain respect are shrouded and washed away by the embarrassing and selfish acts of our own leaders. May God show His amazing grace and mercy upon and save the Philippines and give us a true leader. Let's just trust that in the end divine justice will prevail. -- Ramon Macalalad, Harbor City, California, USA (via e-mail)

good move para kay gma.......

the oppposition doesn't seem to take the upper hand despite the blunders of gma.......

kanya kanya kasi opposition, pa pogian.......

nakikiramdam lang ang taong bayan maski na ito ay sinasampal sampal..........

Right now I don't think there's still a true Filipino leader out there that can lead us to the wills of majority of the Filipino people. Maybe in the near future, i hope so.
As an ordinary citizen I am not favor of the very early action that our President has made for Mr. Estrada. How clamsy our President is in handling this kind of sensitive matter. I'm not totally against of the executive clemency but with this kind of decision that has made so early, so fast, with this particular convicted felon who didn't even experience to step in the very gate of Muntinlupa, is not fair to the Filipinos who fought for this battle. I'm sure the Philippines again put its image in the laughingstock of other countries. So don't be surprised or angry again Filipinos if other countries will use us as their subject for laughter.

I beg your pardon Mr. Macalalad. The pardon on Erap is not a slap on the face of the Filipino people. IT IS STAB ON THE HEART AND MIND OF THE ENTIRE NATION! You're right though on most things in your posting. Just like you I live overseas and like you I can't help notice a lot of injustices done on many Filipino nationals in and out of the country. This is mainly due to the treatment of our countrymen by our own countrymen. The Filipino people, I'm afraid have yet a lot to learn in terms of living real life, real relationships, and the very basic of the difference between right and wrong. In a sense it's been hard for me to acknowledge and be proud being a Filipino.

You hit it on the nail bro...I absolutely agree with you..It's really a hard slap on the Filipino people not only on the left but on the right cheek as well that's why it became red not rosy...lol...seriously, how embarassing...so apathetic...it seems like the EDSA DOS has been washed down the drain...This is so ridiculous...Wala...are we hopeless in getting good governance? so WAKE UP KABABAYAN...

The next 100 days.
Based on the decisions made by GMA lately, I believe she's in deep trouble she 's trying to hang in there, survive the attack from different directions and stay in power or shall we say stay as hostage.

Granting pardon to a seventy year old man like Erap is acceptable but giving executive clemency to a person who did not even admitted his mistake, who was proven guiltry of plunder and who's family not even recognized the president who granted him pardon is totally unacceptable .

I'm just an ordinary citizen but I'm still in the state of disbelief, how about those individual involved, like the prosecutors, the aggrieved parties [people of the Philppines and those directly affected]

I consider Erap and GMA a failure they don't desrve to lead the country,
We need a change, a sweeping reform and I hope it would start in the next 100 days.

You people are crazy to pronounce that pardoning Erap was wrong. You are Uncivilized,Ignorant,Animals.A President should be respected. If you do not ,then you are not respecting the Filipinos.GMA did the right decision.I pray that more good plans from today will be done.God bless the Philippines.

I hope that the next Philippine President shall not make this pardon a pattern to do by the time the present controversial President GMA is put into trial and convicted from so many blunders and controversies ## I AM SORRY ##

Forecast: GMA will fall from power in 3 to 6 months

The Pardon did it.

GMA will be booted out of Malacanang within 6 months. The atmosphere today is similar when the exposes' on Belle Shares during Erap's Presidency started. The rottenness of this administration is now exposed. The people know they had been had.

In the coming weeks and months more evidences of corruption, moral bankruptcy, immorality of this administration will be exposed.

I, for one reached my limit with the "pardon". Many reached their limits with the ZTE scandal, many others reached their's with the Malacanang pay-offs, others with the "I am sorry" cheating. This administration is now a goner. I won't place my bets on her anylonger.

I now wish we have another EDSA.

Tanay is now vacant and should be ready by then for a new occupant. Who? You're guess is good as mine. Let us see her there. Nope...let us push her there.

ARROYO PARDONS ERAP: What a joke!
It proves only one thing. This president is a political prostitute.

@ Ramon
Am just curious on your so many why(s) and rosary of unfortunate scenarios surrounding the immediate past (observations) and went on in the end wishing (and as if hoping in resignation) a magical stroke of the God Almighty to solve our problems.
To put it in a palatable manner(less this post be deleted), this is traceable to the chop suey culture of the Pinoy. Bottom-line is we whine a lot but not raising a finger to solve with perseverance our predicaments. If I may be a bit critical, I’ll drive you back to yesteryears of the INDOLENT INDIOS. From there, a century hence, try to fathom the degree of our social evolution (IF EVER) to our present state. Having said this, may you now with clarity understand why we still wallow in the mud we came from. And hopefully, this time offer a fragment of a solution for it and not simply waiting for ALLAH for a heavenly MANNA.

Folks - the more I read about events back home, the more I feel that the Philippines, and Filipinos living there, are living lives of hopeless desperation.

This pardon extended by a shameless "president" is the last straw. If Filipinos haven't got it yet, the one, only and true reason for why they have been left behind is - surprise, surprise - their inability to live in the present. They hanker to an imaginary past and aspire to a better future without any clue as to what they have to do to live today. And that today requires that they impose justice firmly and impartially and obey the law.

The Philippines is backward for one and only one reason - few Filipinos obey and respect the law. Everybody wants to be treated differently and above the rest.
Few pay taxes and almost every one would cut corners if they don't get caught. Corruption is rife because the crooks know they can't be punished even if xaught. Under those circumstances, the objective rules the Weber believes to be a requisite for progress are violated, so few dare to risk and set up ventures that give jobs to the masses. True, there are some businessmen who still manage to do that inspite, but we are talking about ordinary entrepreneurs that create jobs for millions.

The connection is simple but because they do not live in the present, Filipnos commit the most egregious blunders that stop them from moving forward. That this pardon should be done by an "educxated" sitting "president" speaks volumes - that the country will never have any hope of improvement within any realistic future.

I don't care what you people say about Mrs. Pidal's given pardon to Erap, I'm happy that he is free atlast. If Mrs. Pidal, Didnt pardon Erap he well rott in jail. Smart din pala si Erap for accepting it because that is the only way he can be free. I don't blame him at all if I were him I'll do the same thing!

truly, what gma did was abominable! and we expect to be treated with respect by other countries? but why? when our own president shows great disrespect for the philippine justice system and its people by pardoning one of the most corrupt politician ever to be convicted of plunder. never mind that this plunderer amassed billions of people's money to finance his lavish lifetyle along with his relatives and concubines. such a blatant misuse of power this lady president had shown and, no doubt, will continue to do for as long as she's in office. we should all remember the names and faces of all the other politicians who are in full support of this president so we may elect them out of office when the next election comes around.

Arroyo Resign!

Lahat na lang isinisisi si GMA. Wala ng ginawang tama ang pangulo.

That is not an slap in the face of filipino people. Nobody thinks about that.
The filipino people are content with their lives to look for something to eat or a job. To get involved in president's everyday job is not anymore important to filipino people.
Nobody is complaining meaning, the people are content with what are president is doing except of course for people who are the enemy of the president.

The president did the right thing to pardon Erap. If a convicted felon is granted clemency or pardon much more Erap. He as all the qualifications.

Remember this, President Gerald Ford granted pardon to Nixon after the watergate scandal and nobody complained.

It's only in your mind to create an intrigue.

Philippines' Laws are made to protect the rich and the powerful, and to suppress the poor.

Hello, Mr. Macalalad:

Yes, we had (I say Had)...the law that could have impeached a sitting president alleged to have plundered the government's coffer but they (the members of the senate and the congress with the help of Davide and his courts...and as condoned by most members of the elite and civil Filipino society as well as the church)....was not followed. They, who helped this bogus regime to squat in Malacanang, had thrashed and violated this law. So, the country as it is now is not any where near what we are praying for to have as a country with majority of people of impeccable moral integrity. Diplomas from prestigious religious universities and state universities failed to produce these quality citizens in our youths (the hope of the fatherland) who could have fought to prevent the ascension of a bogus leader. Mr. Estrada had been a victim of the most outrageous crime any elected politicians could have committed for he was still an elected official who should have been subjected to the rules set in the Constitution on how to get him out of Malacanang if he was truly guilty beyond doubt. The court that tried and convicted Estrada as guilty is not a legal entity. Gloria Arroyo has never been elected through any election that was free of allegation of cheating and fraud. She is exercising the power of the presidency without the authority from the Filipino people. That’s exactly what’s wrong about this government. It is an illegal government. Sooo…..

Kaya nababoy na lang pamahalaan ng Pilipinas. As of now, these corrupt Filipinos are just looking for ways to prevent the mainstream Filipinos to go after them. Bilad na bilad na silang lahat. Kung sinu-sino sila sa dahilang ang mga pagmumuka nila halus araw-araw nakabandera sa mga pahayagan; kung paano sila mangatwiran at mambaligtad ng mga katotohanan. There is truth in what Lincoln said, “one could fool some of the people some of the time, but he cannot fool all the people all the time.

my god... my god... my god the philippine daily inquirer was having a mucular degeneration at the beginning of the arroyo administration and now it's getting serious. PDI is getting very blind. in the editorial today, PDI thinks the filipino nation was united when ERAP was convicted by the court created for such purpose to protect the cabals of gloria.
in all indications even if the survey
conducted is by the gloria group the popularity rating of gloria is in the negative. where the hell... PDI got their news information. PDI is unbelievable. amazing. awfully amazing.

if the court decided that if ERAP was innocent can we imagine the ginormous effect to our country. with the now retired chief of injustice davide and his supreme court? davide is a big joke! what a shame. and PDI is in the same boat.
no wonder why this country is in shamble. PDI and alikes in the media are fooling the readers and the nation. ohhhh
filipinos!!!! ohhhhhh pppppphhhhhhiiiiiiilllllliiiiippppppppppiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssss.

I am probably one of the "Last of the Mohicans", to borrow that expression, to believe that there is still hope for moral redemption in GMA, but the shameless undue haste with which she gave executive clemency to an unremorseful and unapologetic scoundrel was the last straw. I tried to hold on to the few clutches of straws, but I cannot anymore.

GMA says her political resolve is not to fear making hard unpopular decisions. Will someone please tell her she's got that resolve all messed up no wonder she continues to be mired in endless scandals and controversies one after another and the most recent one is giving clemency to an undeserving felon because she has just made a mockery of justice.

That much ballyhooed reconciliation with Erap is nothing more than a feeble attempt to save GMA's sagging acceptability and to make up for having driven the scoundrel out of Malacanang in 2001. Marcos had done far worse atrocities but the call for reconciliation among Filipinos was unnecessary. It is the Marcoses who never reconciled with the people and ignored the people's demand for retribution. They never apologized for their collective sins in abusing and exploiting the people and wealth of the country. Now comes an unremorseful Erap arrogantly claiming he is innocent and a victim of injustice. How does GMA expect the people to reconcile with Erap when he and his spiteful lawyer Rene Saguisag make a mockery of the law and the justice system by repeatedly claiming there is no hope for justice even from the Supreme Court just because its Chief Justice ruled against Erap's return to Malacanang. This is all a big farce.

I'm just fed up with the hypocrisy of these people.

With all the INSANITY involved in the PARDON in the name of RECONCILIATION!

SISON is a SELFISH, GREEDY, BELLIGERENT SOCIOPATH ELOQUENTLY DUPING HIS MINIONS OF A DIED CAUSE (BERLIN WALL).HE HAS NEVER RESPECTED NOR RECOGNIZED THE MANDATES OF THE CONSTITUTION AND PROFESSES INNOCENCE OF HIS CRIMES BEHIND HIS SINISTER SMILES. FINALLY, NEVER APOLOGETIC!

ESTRADA IS AN ACTOR HIDING HIS DIRTY DESIGNS UNDER THE SCRIPTS OF SHOWBIZ. APOLOGETIC? DID HE?? IF EVER, IT IS ALWAYS CONSTRUED AS A PART OF THE SCRIPT (in Tinsel Town). A CONVICTED PLUNDERER BY A COMPETENT COURT NOT EVEN RECOGNIZED BY MANY OF HIS MINIONS AND ARROYO FEARING OF HER FORESEEN UNMASKING OF HER CULPABILITIES PROSTITUTED HER WISDOM IN A MURKY LOGIC OF COMPASSION FOR A SELECTED(of her own kind) PERSON AGING 70 SUPPOSEDLY HAVE SUFFERED ENOUGH (IN HIS AIR CONDITIONED WELL FURNISHED VILLA and NEVER A NATIONAL PENITENTIARY DUNGEON) IN 6 YEARS (what a publicity) AND IN THE NAME OF (ala Aquino) RECONCILIATION!!

And many want to gamble again the country for another FATE OF HISTORY TO FOLLOW (Estrada’s). Bakit mga Pinoy PAPAANO KA napalambot sa yong principio?HOW CAN YOU HELP HEAL MY BLEEDING SIDE?

HAMUGAN NAMAN NINYO AKO AT AKO’Y TUYONG-TUYO NA SA PANG-ARAW ARAW KO.

I will post the last sentence of an editorial:
”A responsible opposition could help unearth the truth, but in this country, everything is negotiable. Especially in the spirit of national reconciliation”

THIS SPEAKS FOR IT ALL.

Now Partner, I hope don’t take it so hard from me.

i would like to make a comment regarding erap's case, we all have our mistakes in life, why we can't we just leave him alone and start his life anew with the clemency that he got from our president, i'm sure that he will not be a traitor to arroyo after what she has done for him, so leave that man alone, i have in no way connected to that guy but with how the media's sensationalizing everything its annoying to hear and see what's written everywhere

Now, they are even considering an anti poverty post for somebody convicted of depriving the poor of their money..

Plunder: plun·dered , plun·der·ing , plun·ders
VERB:

To seize wrongfully or by force; steal: plundered the supplies.

"Estrada, a convicted plunderer who regained his freedom the other day after Ms Arroyo pardoned him,"

sometimes u win ...somtimes u lose...everything has an end...
blah blah blah blah

In US we view this ERAP pardon a corrrupt...pardoning a corrupt!!
lets pray for God to bless our beloved country!!

Shut Up Fil- Am or whoever you may be. I have no respect in you ! The thing is we... yes we only not you will be moving forward. I pity you Ramon... cause you are there in a society which is bulok in the inside

It's so funny though, that close to half of Filipinos in the Philippines still support that idiot.

The Government is half the problem, the other half are the Filipino people. You think a Presidential pardon would of happened if there was a big majority against it? No. The vast majority of the masses (I hate that reference, because masses are predominately the poor, who have the biggest voter sway and government need, yet give little to contribute to the tax base. Yeah, I will get a a lot of flack for that, but its fucking true.) still support the idiot.

But, hey I still have hope for the masses though, at least in the most recent elections they didn't vote for actors. God forbid the next Presidential elections, I wonder what idiot the masses will support. My bet is probably going to be... an actor.

So don't just blame the government, blame the people as well.

After the Presidential pardon granted to Mr. Estrada let us see how hearty Estrada is to handle these strong temptations houndering him coming from the leftist and other anti-government groups who like to oust Pres. Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo from office. But if he really chooses to become a private citizen and no longer wanted to involve in dirty politics just like what he said after receiving the letter of his freedom, then maybe he should speak up directly and express his clear intentions, if it 's true, to help the government to promote for reconciliation rather than to be quiet in the corner and not telling anything. But to be silent can give a lot of meaning. Let's see what will happen to him if he turns his back against Arroyo.

Hi Ramon, you just said the facts about our country,oh yes, alright,it's a HOPELESS country anyway.I think terri hatcher and company are just laughing at us!!!From worried Pinoys in Europe.

Matagal nang sinsampal ang mga disenteng at ordinaryong Pilipino ng ng nakahelerang katiwalian ng kasulukuyang administrasyon. Antayin natin dahil marami pang sampal ang darating.

Well, all I can say, there is no hope with the political situation in the philippines. Whether a president, a mayor, a senator, a congressman, everybody wants to sit in power and we all know the reason obviously. So that's why, Philippines is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, and as a filipino, I couldn't agree for more because it's happening. Even if one tries to cover, it can't be done, the poor became poorer, but the rich? became richer sitting in power. I just love being filipino but the on the other hand, it's frustrating and so depressing if for so many years and so the coming years, philippine politics is becoming worse as the year ascends. Just sad, really sad.

Does GMA know how many lives paid for Erap's (and his relatives) plunder during his vice presidency and presidency? Or maybe there was a side deal re: "give me half of what you plundered and you will be free?". Commuting his sentence in half would have been the least act and would have given her more "delikadesa". What a joke and an idiot this little president is.

On second thougth, please don't even think of impeaching GMA. I'd rather have a limping Erap scot free then a Noli De Castro as president. God help the Philippines!

kawawa naman si inang bayan !

How to get rich in the Philippines ? Run for office, plunder like hell, take a break when impeached, get pardoned by the new administration. And the whole cycle goes round again !

Mukhang nag sama na ang dalawang kampo ng magnanakaw !

The perya is over.

Former US president Richard Nixon immediately got his pardon and never spent a night in jail in the name of national unity.Erap spent 6 yrs in jail, was tried and convicted.Filipinos all around the world should be proud of our justice system, that we do send congressmen, governor, mayor and president in jail.

Ramon,

I share your view on this.

People here in the Philippines are so used to being treated like crap and refuse to be treated any other way.

The truth is, most Filipinos will take any kind of crap as long as they see some benefit to it. Never minding and never thinking of the degradation it inflicts on their very soul.

This mentality is evident in every aspect of everyday life on city streets and rural roads.

Filipinos will vote for and campaign for people with no sense or even a perverted sense of morality, as long as they can ask for dole outs or have money for their efforts.

Gloria Arroyo rose to power on the shoulders of some who thought that she could really effect the changes needed by our society. Moral Ascendancy, they shouted, only later to be embarrassed by her later corruption.

Filipinos deserve leaders like Gloria Macapagal Aroyo because most Filipinos are corrupt and immoral.

Holier than thou. The problem with our brother and sisters living abroad think they found heaven.Considering now the overheated economy of US due to thier "wise" president-ala Dirty Harry.Everybody has its fair share. But the problem in the Philippine politics is astronomical in degree. You have to have clean bill of health to sustain 1 day in office otherwise you will have a stroke, at the least. What GMA did was to save her heart. She cannot anymore think, having throngs of people around her suggesting ideas to make a decision, she has to immediately release Erap.Poor GMA,history will hound her even to her decendants.Anyway she doesnt care. But im sad for LOLI,i really like her, shes so sensitive-mother material. She is strong.Like most filipinos.Hoping our brothers and sisters abroad will continue to share thier experiences and thier disgust.

You are outrage with the clemency and have a very arrogant opinion; but you are lacking the wisdom but rather just ashames of being a Filipino...dont you recieve respect from others?

Hi Ramon,
first of all, if you love your country so much and you are so blasting its politics, why you live in the US?
About Erap, would it not be a bigger slap on the people if he would imprisoned for plunder, even it cannot be plunder if no public funds have been involved?
Why don't you ask why the self confessed plunderer Singson is not even asked to explain where the tax millions he stole have been gone, after it was proved that it could not even have been delivered to Erap as he claimed?? Is this, aside from his going scotfree for his crime, another thank you for helping to oust Erap? Be fair and look at both sides. In addition, one likes it or not, GMAwas well within laws when pardoning Erap, she has this power by constitution.
Regarding the image of OFW's abroad, most damaging are the so many cases where OFW's are accused of killing. About the US TV program, why bloggers make a big blabla for it, while direct affected people are just ignoring it and understand what really it is. Besides, it has been done after the big cheating at nurse exams and anybody has the right to check if a Filipino medical aide comes from an involved or not involved school. Evenb in RP, it matters very much from which school an applicant graduated.

i think its not a slap in the filipinos face...its more like suhol to the people because of all the controversies happeing.

i think there's nothing wrong setting him free..he's been in jail for many years already and obviously whatever happens it will be a guilty verdict. so why spend a lot of money guarding erap.

besides they are planning this for a long time and just waiting for the verdict. we've seen it in news before that they are talking to erap.

at least not after releasing erap, the corruption haunting the gma regime has calm down..

The reality in philippine politics that Jueteng Money is considered Plunder while Public Funds is not a Plunder reason to be morally question imagine all the Anomalies of President GMA that has been involved in million of dollars and yet no one has ever invoked another edsa revolution and has stayed in power where if you really put it this way. President GMA holds all the power in the philippines, she controlled the Senate, the Judiciary and the Congress. so the only way to resolve this problem is wait until 2010. it will save time and money to boot out a lemon choose president.

I take extreme offense at all those comments asking that Estrada should not have asked for pardon. To be candid, all this put Erap into jail and matyrdize the guy is disgusting and extremely cruel. Erap has become a barbie doll that they want to use to further their agenda against Aroyo at the expense of Estrada. THESE PEOPLE ARE EUNUCHOID COWARDS who choose to use a fledgling old man to step on just to agrandize their agenda. I cordially invite them to have the balls to step in Jail in Erap's sake and put their money where their mouths are.

The ERAP Pardon is really a slap in the face of the Filipino people. It is a slap in the face of those who elected him office for his MACHO Image and not for his delicadeza. It's like saying, you want a non-repentant sinner forgiven? Then that is what you get, you gullible people. Then when the President steps down in 2010, you "good-for-nothing bastards" quarrel against each other up to the point of annihilating each and every one for all I care.
