SHAME on you media, especially ABS-CBN!

You think you’re above the law? You are as arrogant as Trillanes & Co. You should show more respect for the authorities who are only there to protect the people (including you) and uphold the law. It is always a lose-lose situation when the police face the egoistic media.

If all hell broke loose during the Manila Pen standoff and some media men lost their lives, the police will be blamed, but then if the police try to [perform] their duties, the media cries harassment.

You think only GMA should reform? Think again; the media should reform too.

Pati interfaith naging politika. Iangat niyo naman Pilipinas. Hindi poro kontra. Ganoon ba talaga ugali Filipino. Poro negatibo.

What I don’t like among the big media organizations is they are playing with the lives and emotions of the people.

Just take for instance the game shows. They may have entertained many but they are cooking the fans and audience with their own lard. Prizes don’t come from their own funds but from every 2.50 text messages sent to them by millions of watchers. In addition, we are made to buy ring tones worth 15 pesos. This is a form of stealing. Nobody knows how much they are collecting but the prizes are too small and our chance is too little. Why spend 2.5 plus 15 when I can gamble this money in lotto?

Another example is they conduct charitable works but they make people, especially OFWs spend / contribute the needed funds. While the media takes the credit for charity works, the OFWs unknowingly foot the bill.

Now, who is responsible for the political turmoil we have today? I think the main culprit is the media. It’s the media who is spreading lies fed by politicians and people with vested interest. Politicians create the scenario, while the media gave the poisonous dosages into the minds of the ignorant. Even the big survey outfits have also become tools for poisoning the minds of the public, with the aid by the media.

Now that there is no more senate investigations, the big media outfits are choking each other because somebody is manipulating the ratings.

I can hardly stomach the greediness of these people who want ti keep making money by taking advantage of the weaknesses of people who cannot discern truth from facts, from lies and truths, from good or bad and from stealing or pure entertainment.

No media entities are exempted from grandstanding as grandstanding simply means catching the limelight and this is synonimous to good ratings thus money flows in to these profit focused networks. So MONEY is at the bottomline of all the rhetorics thrown to the people by these networks, “pakitang-tao lang ika nga”. Yet many people are taking it seriously because the rhetorics are well said and with emotions, cinematic to that effect. ABS-CBN is very good in delivering these kind of “effects” to the people, especially the masa people. There’s a “hero” or “star” effect ika nga. Kaya nga marami ang kumakanditato at nanalo sa mga reporter ng ABS-CBN, and this is enough reason that they will deliver bias reporting on political issues.

“They are preventively suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” ani Exconde.

    tiny_defensor Says:

This is a comment about so-called media irresponsibility where ABS-CBN is called to task over their actuations during the Manila Peninsula snafu.

After popping innumerable Advils to mitigate a migraine caused by trying to decipher what earlier comments meant, I have now realized that the reason there is so much discord in this country is because we chose to use a language we are inefficient in. I appeal to those who persist in using English for their posts to please ensure that you read back what you have written to make sure that you yourselves understand your own words.

When we write about media needing to respect government authority, that smacks of a gross misunderstanding of what media and government authority is.

Media and government authorities are under no obligation to respect each other. Because as well all know, respect is earned and cannot be forced on anyone or any organization.

In fact, we do not even need to respect the law. We simply must follow it.

Our problem is that we think that respect is something that is naturally deserved. This is wrong.

Even the truth is which supposed to warrant the utmost respect from a media practitioner is often the first and most disastrous casualty in the exercise of his profession. I won’t even go into mentioning truth and government in one discussion.

Media is obligated to report the TRUTH, an unadulterated mirror of events expressed in words and pictures to enable people to form their own opinion about an event and conditions that relate to it.

In pursuit of reporting the truth, media is mandated to employ ONLY lawful means. In the same way that government authorities are mandated to the use of lawful means in their efforts to maintain public order and safety and the enforcement of our laws.

We have appropriate anti-defamation laws that would sanction and punish anyone including media who unfairly sullies a reputation.

Media may have a moral and ethical obligation to fostering public order and safety but this must not be at the expense of its paramount responsibility–reporting the truth.

We should be more discerning about lumping everyone in mass communication under the label of ‘media.’

True journalists are reporters, editors, and the few columnists and opinion writers whose works leads us to a greater understanding of current events.

Sadly, our media is replete with hacks who will try to pass off their biased and/or ill-thought comments as news. They seek to misinform rather than inform for their personal gain and that of their sponsors/clients.

By falling for their nefarious work, we allow them to sow, fear, uncertainty, and doubt among our people.

For example, I admire ABS-CBN’s zeal for reporting the news. But I lament Korina Sanchez’ passing off her comments about the news as if those were still part of the news. There should be a distinction made when they shift from reporting to commenting. Because there should also be a distinction made when you shift from zombie-mode when you are ‘reading’ the news on camera to stupid mode when you start commenting on it in front of the same camera.

MANILA, Philippines — Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Hermogenes Esperon Jr. lashed out anew at rebel soldiers involved in the failed November 29 uprising, this time in front of the commander-in-chief, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

In a speech during the 72nd anniversary of the AFP in Camp Aguinaldo
on Friday, Esperon labeled the rebels, led by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, as “destabilizers [who are] no different from communist insurgents, ready to sacrifice the common good just to quench their thirst for power.”

Trillanes and a number of his co-accused, all members of the Magdalo group, walked out on a hearing of their coup d’etat case at the Makati City regional trial court on November 29, marched to the central business district, and seized the Manila Peninsula Hotel for over six hours.

They were joined by a witness in their case, Army Brigadier General Danilo Lim in the hotel takeover, which was ended by a military and police assault.

“The swift response of the PNP [Philippine National Police] and the AFP was intended to contain an incident that could go out of hand in the premiere financial district. [These] theatrics could lead to panic and adverse repercussions,” Esperon said.

“We commend the brave police and soldiers who carried out their jobs with professional restraint and decisiveness,” he added.

Esperon also showered thanks on the President for the P150 per day increase in soldiers’ combat pay, the icrease in allowances, and for the release of P1 billion for soldiers’ housing.

In his speech, Esperon reiterated that the military was on track to defeating the communist insurgency and the Islamic extremists and to contain Muslim secessionist groups.

“I now issue to the whole AFP a call to urgency. The communist insurgency problem is the malevolent leech that sucks our national pride and brings the malady of poverty to our midst,” he said.

Esperon said the strength of the New People’s Army, the guerilla arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines, was reduced to 6,000 this year, from 7,200 in 2006, and a high of 12,000 in 2002.

The number of guerilla fronts, on the other hand, was reduced to 87 this year, from 100 in 2006, and 107 in 2005, the military chief said.

On the campaign against the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf, Esperon noted that the group’s second-in-command, Jainal Antel Salialias Abu Solaiman, was killed in an encounter in Sulu in January, at around the same time DNA tests confirmed the death of the bandit group’s chieftain, Khadaffy Janjalani

Official: RP defends rights record over US arms aid

    Agence France-Presse

MANILA - The Philippines said Thursday its human rights record “can stand up” to global scrutiny amid reports the US government may hold back on military assistance.

Ricardo Blancaflor, who was named as head of a recently created task force to solve political killings, said the Philippines only suffered from bad perceptions carried by the media.

“Our human rights record can stand up to the rest of the world,” Blancaflor said on local television.

He said he hoped US legislators would not apply “double standards” in approving military aid for the Philippines, stressing that Manila was closely following cases of human rights abuses and political killings.

Blancaflor noted that Manila did not attach conditions when Washington requested a Philippine contingent to serve in the Iraq war.

“We did not tell the Americans, ‘You know we’re going to join you in Iraq provided you don’t do what you are doing in Guantanamo Bay or in Abu Ghraib prison,” Blancaflor said, referring to US detention centers in Cuba and Iraq where human rights abuses against detainees have been documented.

Blancaflor’s comments came after news reports that US legislators had agreed to slightly increase military funding for Manila from 29.7 million dollars this year to 30 million dollars in 2008. But part of the increase was contingent on the Philippines improving its rights record.

US special envoy Philip Alston earlier this month released a damning report blaming the Philippine military for many unsolved killings.

His report said soldiers were “systematically hunting down” leaders of left-wing groups as part of its anti-insurgency campaign.

Among those killed, he said, were judges, lawyers, anti-government activists, trade union activists and journalists.

Local rights group Kaparatan said the number of extra-judicial killings had dropped to 68 this year from 209 in 2006. It added that since President Gloria Arroyo came to power in January 2001 up to October this year, a total of 887 killings were reported.

Blancaflor defended the military, saying they were the only defense organization in the world where officers can only be promoted if cleared by a human rights office.

“We don’t deserve this kind of reputation. We have to attack this perception that aid is being withheld because we are violating human rights,” he said.

    Walang kwenta!

In Cebuano language, it doesn’t matter if you use the letters “i” or “e”, or letters “o” and “u”. It’s on how you say the word and how you express it. In this case the writer (Belat ni Gloria) is against the president therefore the word he/she used really makes the difference. The words “belat” and “bilat” are synonymous to them. It’s on how the writer spells/writes it.

Just like when I say, “Bilat ni nanay nimo” or ‘belat ni nanay nimo”. To them it’s the same banana.

    _____________________________

Well….its obvious that ABS-CBN is a selfish protector of their own interest. They have businesses that will cross fair & investigative journalism. Lopezes hench men like Korina Sanchez, Ted Failon, Ces Drilon and other ABS reporters are maintaining a level of broadcasting arrogance and protectionism to the businesses related to the Lopezes in exchange for a promise of cinematic effect to the people and hefty amounts. My advice is just to watch their faces, listen to them and just ignore and laugh at what they say!

True, you can say or pronounced Cibu Cety but you can not write Cibu Cety. And what made you think that Belat ni Gloria is Cebuano or Cebuana in the first place?

Do you know that Poke (pronounced po-keh) is a Hawaiian food delicacy and with no offensive meaning for Americans but have different gist for Filipinos. Meaning, words when pronounced may have offensive connotation to other language but can be exactly different to other dialect. But WRITING it is totally different.

You have to do better with your logic and not to assume too much. Better yet ask Belat ni Gloria what was his/her true meaning.

BusinessWorld: Satisfaction with Arroyo falls further - SWS
    12/18/2007 | 12:10 AM
Ok. Heres another survey against the FAKE PRESIDENT OF CEBU. You’ve the judges! Kong ako sa kanya magtago na ako. But of course she has no shame.
    ***********
Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us BY ALEXIS DOUGLAS B. ROMERO, BusinessWorld Reporter

PUBLIC SATISFACTION with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has fallen further in the fourth quarter, with her net rating now at -16 from -11 previously, a new survey from the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.

This was despite another SWS finding that more than half of Filipinos believe Mrs. Arroyo’s grant of a pardon to convicted former President Joseph E. Estrada was “good for the country.”

A Palace spokesman said the survey results could be viewed as a challenge for the administration to do better, but would not distract the President from continuing to implement programs that will ultimately lead to benefits for the public.

A political analyst, however, said positive government programs do not automatically mean positive approval ratings as long as the Arroyo administration remains dogged by issues and controversies.

The results of the November 30 to December 3 nationwide survey, made exclusive to BusinessWorld, had 32% of respondents satisfied and 48% dissatisfied with Mrs. Arroyo’s performance, for the net rating (% satisfied minus % dissatisfied) of -16.

The President’s net ratings were close to neutral in the first and second quarters (-4 and -3, respectively) before plunging to -11 in the third quarter.

The question posed to 1,200 adults nationwide was “Please tell me how satisfied or dissatisfied you are in the performance of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as President of the Philippines. Are you very satisfied, somewhat satisfied, undecided if satisfied ordissatisfied, somewhat dissatisfied, very dissatisfied?”

The independent survey research institution said loss of support in Mindanao and the Visayas, and worsening dissatisfaction in Metro Manila, resulted in the fourth-quarter drop.

In Mindanao, Mrs. Arroyo’s net ratings plunged to -20 (30% satisfied, 49% dissatisfied) from -1 (38% satisfied/dissatisfied, rounded) just a quarter ago. In the Visayas, it turned negative, at -9 (35% satisfied, 44% dissatisfied), from the neutral +1 (40% satisfied, 38% dissatisfied, rounded) in the third quarter.

In Metro Manila, it was -34 (25% satisfied, 59% dissatisfied), down from September’s -24 (28% satisfied, 52% dissatisfied).

She gained somewhat in the Balance of Luzon, where her net rating was -12 (34% satisfied, 45% dissatisfied) from -18 (32% satisfied, 50% dissatisfied) previously.

Rural net satisfaction, however, fell to -8 from -3, while in urban areas it dropped to -23 from -18.

The margin of error, the SWS said, was plus or minus 3% for the national average, and plus or minus 6% for area results.

By classes, net satisfaction with the President turned negative among the ABC sector, at a net -16 (35% satisfied, 51% dissatisfied), from +8 (46% satisfied, 38% dissatisfied) in the previous quarter.

It remained negative among the class D or masa, at -13 (33% satisfied, 46% dissatisfied) from -12 (34% satisfied, 46% dissatisfied) previously.

Satisfaction went down among the class E, to -25 (26% satisfied, 51% dissatisfied), compared to -13 (33% satisfied, 46% dissatisfied) in September.

The SWS also asked the respondents how they agreed with the statement “The grant of pardon by President Arroyo to former President Joseph Estrada in his plunder case was good for the country: strongly agree, somewhat agree, undecided, somewhat disagree, strongly disagree.”

A majority of 54% agreed, compared to the 23% who disagreed for a net agreement of +32. The rest of the respondents (22%) were undecided.

“However, the President did not gain from the pardon because those who agreed with it were even more dissatisfied with her than those who disagreed with it,” the SWS said.

It said the President’s net satisfaction rating was -12 among those opposed to the pardon, but was an even lower -22 among those supportive of it.

In October, Malacañang announced that Mrs. Arroyo was granting Mr. Estrada a full pardon, just weeks after he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sandiganbayan on graft and corruption charges.

Support for the Estrada pardon was prevalent in all areas, with net agreement highest at +45 in Metro Manila, compared to +38 in Mindanao, +32 in the Balance of Luzon, and +15 in the Visayas.

It was much stronger in class E, at +35, and in class D, +33, compared to class ABC’s +15.

    Not a distraction

Asked to comment, deputy Presidential spokesman Lorelei C. Fajardo said the survey would not distract the President from her focus on improving governance and promoting economic development.

“It (the survey) is a challenge for us to do better but we must focus on the programs of the government with or without these surveys. We hope the economic gains will translate to benefits for the public,” she said in a phone interview.

Ms. Fajardo said the perception may have been shaped by the bad news in the media.
“The good things being done by the government are not being communicated properly. Bad news tends to overtake the good news so we must work double time to spread the good news to the people,” she said.

But Amado M. Mendoza, Jr., a political analyst from the University of the Philippines, said that while people may feel the positive effects of government programs, these would not necessarily translate to public approval due to continuing controversies.

“People may recognize [the programs] but these may not win for her approval because of basic issues that do not have closure until now.

“For example, the legitimacy issue is not yet finished. This is further worsened by corruption scandals and other issues like extrajudicial killings,” he said.

Ms. Fajardo, meanwhile, also clarified that the President did not pardon Mr. Estrada to gain the support of his followers.

“No, it (the pardon) was not for popularity but because of a policy and for humanitarian reasons. This will not bother her (Mrs. Arroyo) because she knows she did the right thing,” the Palace spokesman said.

But Mr. Mendoza said it would have been better if the Arroyo administration also prosecuted incumbent officials guilty of corruption and not just Mr. Estrada.

“There would be public satisfaction if the government punishes everybody engaged in corruption. It would be better if administration officials are also punished. The people who approve of the pardon know that there are others who committed corruption aside from Mr. Estrada,” he said.

“There is dissatisfaction because they can see individuals who have been accused of corruption but remain free. People may think that Estrada was convicted because he is no longer the one in power. They see a sense of injustice here.” ArticlesMedia Links

    Rigodon ng mga kapit-tuko

    Ellen Tordesilla

    Hi Yzabelle,

There’s is a simple answer to our country’s poverty problem “Population Control or Family Planning”. It was the time of Cory administration when our population has rapidly gone up and which called the “Post Revolution Babies” because she abolished the Population Control Commission created by Marcos. We don’t have to blame the present administration for the poverty that the Philippines encountered today. We have to blame the Church for this phenomenon because they are against family planning. If you look the index for the most populous country in the world, the Philippines is in the list of top 12 most populous country and most on the top list are poverty stricken countries. Even the Philippines sustain the economic growth of 7-8% per year it won’t sustain our fast population growth of 2.5% per year. Before the EDSA revolution our population is only about 48-50 Million, now we have 85 Million population it was up more than 70% in the span of 21 years!

The root of poverty is the fast population growth. Our present administration should act immediately before it’s too late and not to be influence by the church or the bishops because they only want their followers to grow and they don’t care if our country is in deep shit.

BTW, abused Executive Orders or E.O.s are among the support mechanism which causes corruption and henceforth affects correct financial management and aggravates hunger in the Philippines. E.O. 464 for one is designed to cover-up anomalies in government and protect people involved in corruption.

What is primarily being asked of the government is to stop CORRUPTION, ANOMALIES and COVER-UPs, so far they are expert in skirting the issue and throw the blame to everyone else but themselves.

    Abby Dear,

Again I have to agree with Bert, except that I am not a gentleman, but like you, a lady too. In the spirit of season I want to be apologetic to begin with.

To be perfectly honest, I am sorry Abby, if I have caused you pain because of my irresponsible comments on your opinion.

I am sorry that the only proof I can come up that would say the least that I am against corruptions were my few entries in this blog.

I am sorry that if I were made you to believe that you have to denounce corruption openly in the street. You don’t have to do that, there are people who would do that for us like what they did before, during and after EDSA 1 – 3. (I skip the number 2 instead put dash; you might find number 2 “irresponsible”)

I am very sorry to disagree, that not because you’ve notice the propensity of some people to use different aliases this would qualify that your observation was correct. It’s not a matter of opinion when it comes to this; you need to be an expert on this field to say the least.

I am sorry if I have equated you to some people who can’t discern garci/gma’s voice. And I felt equally sorry that you still find good words for her, you knowing she was the voice behind Hello Garci Tape.

I am sorry if you have not seen the follow up report on TV Patrol (Maybe you were tuned to BBC) a day or two after the girl’s death. They DID run reports that allegedly she was raped by her father. But as to why she committed suicide it has to be resolve by authorities but not bloggers.

We can not forever blame our Government true, but equally or much worst is being ignorant and indifferent to what our Government’s wrong doing.

“mahirap na nga, ang dami pa mga anak. is that the govt.’s fault too?” It was only NOREX’s entry who insinuated that.

I felt sorry for me because I don’t have the access to Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel and BBC that would make me richer with knowledge.

I felt sorry to ABS-CBN, after their programs like Bahay Kalinga Village in Bulacan that shelters less privilege people, Bantay Bata, Save Lamesa Dam, to name a few, still some people (Abby included) believe that they lack social responsibility and comment on their day time programming as pathetic. I was almost made to believe that media’s social responsibility is greater than that of the President of the Republic.

This “irresponsible ABS-CBN” news media team was the same “irresponsible” media who covered EDSA 2 and EDSA 3.

I’m going to miss you Abby Dear, since this would be my last post in this Blog. Not that I have grown tired of you and other people who comment on English writing but not on issues (those who comment on English writing IMO are pathetic as day time programming).

I believe I have read the better answer and gained knowledge (Thanks to this Blog) as clearly explained by LUX’s entry. I need to move to other Blogs “that would make me richer in knowledge” (allow me Abby to use your own words).

An excellent quote “deep caring”, allow me to post it again:

Bro Karl Gaspar reminds us of the popular Martial law quote:

“First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out -
because I was not a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out -
because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me -
and there was no one left
    to speak out for me.”

(The quote was attributed to a German Pastor, Martin Niemoller, who resisted the terror of Hitler’s Fascist regime in Germany in the l940s.– Karl Gaspar)

A hunch, paranoia or a portent?

I have noticed that before the administration slams down on anyone or on any institution, the apologists first issues floods of criticisms in blogs before they proceed with their plan.

Just a hunch. If there would be no massive response against supposed “media irresponsibility”, the next phase would be cracking down on the media using both legal and illegal Executive Orders by you know who.

Perhaps my hunch is wrong and I hope it is; but if is not, the media and civil society should prepare for the administration’s “Operation Media-crackdown” which may possibly come in the near future.

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us An anti-crime group on Sunday criticized the alleged “hush-hush” release of Romeo Jalosjos, former Zamboanga del Norte congressman, from the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City.

Dante Jimenez, chairman of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC), said the release of Jalosjos might embolden high-profile personalities to commit crimes because even if they get imprisoned they could easily be pardoned.

“Yan ang isang tanong na maaring sabihin. Grabe ang rape ngayon (You could say this will embolden high-profile personalities to commit crimes. Rape is especially prevalent these days),” Jimenez said in an interview on dzXL radio.

He also urged authorities to disclose the list of inmates at the NBP who are up for parole or pardon.

The relatives of Jalosjos are allied with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) party, according to Jimenez.

“Dapat ay pantay-pantay, dapat malaman natin in public sino ang nabibigyan ng laya through the pardon and parole (We should be fair. Authorities should make public who had been pardoned and paroled),” he said.

But Persida Acosta, head of the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) head, belied claims that Jalosjos got preferential treatment from Malacañang, which she said had pardoned more than 400 inmates.

Acosta, in a separate interview on dzXL radio, said the release of the other inmates was done without fanfare.

“Dapat kung may di kilala may pina-cover at pina-interview sa inyo. Kami naman pag kliyente namin uuwi na di na request pumunta sa amin (We should have let the media cover the lesser-known inmates released),” she said.

She said the release of the pardoned inmates was kept low-profile because most of them were poor and could not afford to stay longer in Metro Manila.

“Sinasabi ko lang sige uwi na, nagsusulat na lang sila nagpapasalamat sa mahal na Pangulo (I just told them to go home. Some of them had written the President to express their thanks),” she said. - GMANews.TV

If you want to open your own view regarding GMA corruption please create your own topic but be careful not to mislead our people hope what you are about to comment is something TRUE and FACTUAL not HEARSAY or GOSSIP as being delivered by ABS-CBN to the public. We know poverty is currently existing since then but it doesn’t mean it’s the current administrator’s fault. If I ask you whose president wants to jeopardize and degrade the standard of living of their compatriots? none I think, because most of them were looking for solutions to ease the burdens of every family in this country. The only problem is sometimes some people were not satisfied to what the government is doing for their better cause.. and what happened to the previous presidents? if I ask you.. Starting Marcos regime they were all being told to step down.. but from Marcos to Arroyo did our country gained some development?
Please ask yourselves SELINA and BELAT NI GLORIA what is your contribution to our country for the betterment of our compatriots? CRITICIZE OUR LEADERS? Please start looking at yourselves you were being contaminated by the medias’ BAD IMPRESSION to our government.

BTW, OFW’s were planning to create more job for their compatriot here in The Philippines, as they have already invested because of the OFW INVESTMENT program of the current administration.
May this open your mind and be optimistic of our government’s plan for our people, our country.

    Manny Villar

To tell you the truth, I am not a fan of Gloria Arroyo. My question is, “Is there any other person in the opposition right now who can possibly run the country better then her? Look at what happened in the last elections. The opposition should have ruled the Senate but what happened to them? Instead of working together as a group they were divided because of self-interest. If they just worked together then they could be the “check and balance” of this administration.

Another thing is I think we have to educate the voters. Yung pera na natanggap nila during the election ay naubos yon just one day at di nila alam na naghirap sila for the next 6 years. Then that will be the time na pwede siyang i-impeach. After all, politics is very dirty.

    Lux Says:

It could be out of topic. My apologies if I derail the thread. However, this could be fundamental to the topic.

I heard from a media authority way back that Freedom of the Press originally was strictly applied to the Press, meaning newspapers. Broadcasting is not the Press. The Freedom of the Press had also something to do with the fact that everything involving the Press is private property. Broadcasting uses the airwaves and frequencies, which are the State’s.

It is also true that any newspaper is free to print what it likes and to quell any news that its owner does not like printed. It is only answerable to the public, who will then make a decision to patronize it or not, and to the libel, defamation and decency laws. Newspapers are self regulated. They can choose to be totally unethical or to become the mouthpiece of vested interests and the only recourse for the public is not to buy the newspaper or read it, if it would be given away free.

This is not so with broadcast and cable because of the above-mentioned use of State “property”. They are also an oligopoly because, in broadcast particularly, Congress grants only very limited franchises. Therefore, for Broadcast, the State can demand balanced reporting and adherence to standards, not merely the requirement to be within the boundaries of what is legal. Still, it is a good thing that here in the Philippines, the professional standards are mostly self regulated in a private sector rules making and policing body, the KBP.

Some suggests that this is an archaic distinction. However, it could still be very much valid, as witnessed by the fact that there is still no need to ask for any government permit or franchise to publish a newspaper, other that the registration as a business, in case it is.

The press also have their news delivered at a later time and the surrounding events are handled more comprehensively. There is time to proofread and edit. In fact, the code of ethics of the Philippine Press Institute requires that everything about an event must be told in the first telling. This is not always possible during crises reporting on TV. For the Press, that is deemed as a reasonable standard for ethical practice.

Obviously, the time factor is a defining trait.

Broadcast News and Public Affairs could be delivered live/instantly and therefore may not always have the complete perspective available or presented. Even with an extended coverage, the need to have the camera focused on the main subject, to await that “moment” prevents a more in-depth coverage of all sides, until after the crisis is over. Broadcast Control is afraid to switch, lest the critical moment be missed.

The press, on the other hand, normally provides this perspective with side bars.

So given the divergent nature of coverage requirements, it is not surprising that it was the Broadcasters who were the most adamant about staying on. However, could they reliably invoke “Press Freedom” in order to do that?

I agree with Father Bernas that they are free to stay on. But only in the context of his next statement. I seem to recall him saying, facetiously, that they are free to decide if they want to die. So there are consequences, and for the moment until the authorities have a better way, change their mind or Congress passes a law that prevents it, having to go through a Scene of the Crime processing in the aftermath could remain as part of the perils for Broadcasters.

Listening to Maria Ressa in her excellent defense for press freedom, I could not help but look at her as an icon of freedom fighters in the country today. But would she exhibit the same vigor against the blatant injustice to the poor farmers? I cannot imagine her recoiling in silent protest for justice in her diary than voicing out in public as she used to in denouncing injustice. Is she afraid of the unnecessary “chilling effect” of SMC ad ban? Same feeling that crippled many media people tend to be selective in their cry for freedom.

    Manila Times Dan Mariano wrote:

“SMC is one of the country’s biggest advertisers—whose advertising allocations could affect the bottom line of many newspapers and networks. In the Sumilao case, SMC’s ad clout has evidently had a greater “chilling effect” on press freedom guardians than the mass arrest of media workers during the Manila Pen standoff.”

I think there’s something wrong in here. Did you know that the word “Belat” is a Cebuano word? It simply means “vagina”. This is a blog site not a Yahoo Messenger (Room) where everybody may choose unpleasant words. Shame on us all kase doon tayong lahat lumabas eh.

May nanay kaya si “Belat ni Gloria”?!

“Belat” is a Pilipino colloquial word meaning “to heckle or to express disapproval”

“Bilat” is a Cebuano word meaning “Vagina”

    Abby Dear,

This might be OT, but I have to say I appreciate that you have painstakingly read some of my thread, but next time please don’t put different meaning to what I have written. This might mislead others and that is being unfair of you. Above I have copied the same text on my earlier thread. Again, if you would have the time to read it, no where will you find that I have blamed our Government for the suicide, poverty or not, of the poor little girl.

You have a penchant of putting different meaning to others thread; you did that first when you made it appear that others were presenting Labayen, Guingona and Orteza as alternatives. Please be responsible even if it is not about journalism.

Amazing (even than Spiderman), how on earth would one comment on poverty allegedly being blamed to my beloved Republic but fails to see the next sentence that 500,000.00 pesos given as token at Malacañang to those “poor” Governors. Abby I have to agree with you when you wrote “No one in his right mind condones corruption”

Like many of the current Blogs, Filipino differs in opinion but obviously all of us in our own little way are concern for the betterment of our Country. These are more than enough reason for me or should I say us to honestly believe that there still hope for our Country.

    Merry Christmas

    PS,
According to police report too, Glorietta 2 blast was an explosion from G2’s septic tank. Filipinos in Afghanistan now lives in fear as Al Queda operatives were in hot pursuit, obviously to study on how they can make use of Filipino’s shit on some of their future plans (Give it a thought but don’t take this seriously Abby)
