The irresponsible media

SHAME on you media, especially ABS-CBN!

You think you’re above the law? You are as arrogant as Trillanes & Co. You should show more respect for the authorities who are only there to protect the people (including you) and uphold the law. It is always a lose-lose situation when the police face the egoistic media.

If all hell broke loose during the Manila Pen standoff and some media men lost their lives, the police will be blamed, but then if the police try to [perform] their duties, the media cries harassment.

You think only GMA should reform? Think again; the media should reform too.

No media entities are exempted from grandstanding as grandstanding simply means catching the limelight and this is synonimous to good ratings thus money flows in to these profit focused networks. So MONEY is at the bottomline of all the rhetorics thrown to the people by these networks, “pakitang-tao lang ika nga”. Yet many people are taking it seriously because the rhetorics are well said and with emotions, cinematic to that effect. ABS-CBN is very good in delivering these kind of “effects” to the people, especially the masa people. Magaling sila sa pagproduce ng pelikula/drama series na hanggang sa pagbabalita ay nadadala ng mga reporter nila ang epekto ng pag-aarte ng mahusay nilang artista sa pelikula at drama series! There’s a “hero” or “star” effect ika nga. Kaya nga marami ang kumakanditato at nanalo sa mga reporter ng ABS-CBN, and this is enough reason that they will deliver bias reporting on political issues.

    2 BuCor off’l suspendido

    (Grace Velasco)

Sinuspinde na ng Department of Justice (DOJ) ang dalawang opisyal ng Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) na pinaniniwalaang may kinalaman sa paglabas sa kulungan ni dating Zamboanga del Norte Rep. Romeo Jalosjos.

“They are preventively suspended pending the outcome of the investigation,” ani Exconde.

Kasunod nito ay inatasan na ni Exconde ang dalawa na maghain ng kanilang paliwanag sa insidente.

This is a comment about so-called media irresponsibility where ABS-CBN is called to task over their actuations during the Manila Peninsula snafu.

After popping innumerable Advils to mitigate a migraine caused by trying to decipher what earlier comments meant, I have now realized that the reason there is so much discord in this country is because we chose to use a language we are inefficient in. I appeal to those who persist in using English for their posts to please ensure that you read back what you have written to make sure that you yourselves understand your own words.

When we write about media needing to respect government authority, that smacks of a gross misunderstanding of what media and government authority is.

Media and government authorities are under no obligation to respect each other. Because as well all know, respect is earned and cannot be forced on anyone or any organization.

In fact, we do not even need to respect the law. We simply must follow it.

Our problem is that we think that respect is something that is naturally deserved. This is wrong.

Even the truth is which supposed to warrant the utmost respect from a media practitioner is often the first and most disastrous casualty in the exercise of his profession. I won’t even go into mentioning truth and government in one discussion.

Media is obligated to report the TRUTH, an unadulterated mirror of events expressed in words and pictures to enable people to form their own opinion about an event and conditions that relate to it.

In pursuit of reporting the truth, media is mandated to employ ONLY lawful means. In the same way that government authorities are mandated to the use of lawful means in their efforts to maintain public order and safety and the enforcement of our laws.

We have appropriate anti-defamation laws that would sanction and punish anyone including media who unfairly sullies a reputation.

Media may have a moral and ethical obligation to fostering public order and safety but this must not be at the expense of its paramount responsibility–reporting the truth.

We should be more discerning about lumping everyone in mass communication under the label of ‘media.’

True journalists are reporters, editors, and the few columnists and opinion writers whose works leads us to a greater understanding of current events.

Sadly, our media is replete with hacks who will try to pass off their biased and/or ill-thought comments as news. They seek to misinform rather than inform for their personal gain and that of their sponsors/clients.

By falling for their nefarious work, we allow them to sow, fear, uncertainty, and doubt among our people.

For example, I admire ABS-CBN’s zeal for reporting the news. But I lament Korina Sanchez’ passing off her comments about the news as if those were still part of the news. There should be a distinction made when they shift from reporting to commenting. Because there should also be a distinction made when you shift from zombie-mode when you are ‘reading’ the news on camera to stupid mode when you start commenting on it in front of the same camera.
