I am more fortunate than Delfin and Dino de la Paz–and I pray they get full justice–but I am sure I am one of many Filipinos that had to endure petty, non-physical, but all-too-frequent abuses of privilege. For example, how many of us have let cars with “8″ license plates, plus requisite hagads and escort cars, cut into our lanes? (You learn early on, with Congressmen, you have no right of way.) The list goes on: facilitators to whisk officials through immigration; PAL business seats filled with gov’t officials, ostensibly headed to Pacquiao in Vegas or to Beijing, where our Olympics marchers had more big-bellied “sports officials” than ill-equipped athletes and so on. While I envy our government officials’ ability to go to Beijing or their golf game in style (where, gulp, some beat up 56-year-olds and their teenaged sons), I suddenly remembered: don’t my taxes pay for these escorts and Pajeros? Can’t hagads chase after criminals instead of stoplights? Can’t cabinet ministers and congressmen serve the people? Then I wake up. I am in the Philippines, where government service is an oxymoron.

You ask the right questions Ricardo. Its sad to see how abuse of power is becoming a norm with our government officials. For us ordinary citizens, the best that we can do is keep an eye on and constantly remind them that we hold government leaders up to a higher standard because they are meant to serve the people and not themselves. Of course, also for us we should be careful not to commit the same offense as well. Our influence and affluence is a gift and it should be humbly shared to those who have less of it.

Let’s do our piece echoing our disenchantment and displeasure to government officials’ extravagance. These 8 cyclinder monstrous SUVs that litter the garages of these cabinet sec, senators, congressmen, mayors…and their parade of policemen shoving you off your lanes so their bosses could pass. And their children with fully modified luxury sedans happy to sport the single digit plate numbers. These are all being paid by taxes that you worked your ass off all your life.

It’s obvious. Political power is the most potent narcotic of them all.
Why else would candidates buy votes and use violence during elections?
So that they get to enjoy the perks and immense power that a highly addictive government position brings, that’s why.
And it’s already ingrained in our culture.

Ricardo,
Government service is absolutely an oxymoron. Unfortunately, our Philippine government is littered with “morons” that their disgusting actions become the norm. It’s a disease - and these moronic government officials are the pathogens.

Not all Public Servants did this thing unfortunately counted in fingers or few good men always suffered like HM, King Anthony Santiago Martin although not yet inaugurated and acknowledged as our King and Head of State, he laid himself in service for some of his fellow in Hagonoy, Bulacan what if he showed his service among his fellow throughout the Philippine Archipelago. Keep up your good and common goal for the benefit of the masses.

Even though I’m not comfortable leaving in USA, sometimes when I read this kind of situation I can say I’m glad I migrated in USA. If this happen here you can always say to the public servant that I pay your salary and this Govt. Officials will be in deep shit. But your last statement is right, you’re in the Philippines. I feel sorry for those affected by Govt. Officials fraud, waste and abuse.
+ CORRUPTION.

I feel your pain and I bet millions of Filipinos also have to endure abuses from those in power in one form or another. It sickens me to no end that my taxes are what these arrogant people are using to finance their abuses.

Ngayon lang naman mga ito. The golf course is where we hit our ball and not another’s ball. Honorables, rich and poor play here. Any kind is also dealt here. But its unheard of for such any squabbles to happen here.
In church, dont forget when you give the sign of peace to add, I am sorry for making this country like this.

You got it right, Mr. Lim. In the US or any first world countries, the mayors, congressmen, senators, etc., are not considered as first class or powerful persons in the society. They are ordinary citizens who are put into office to serve the very people who voted them. These idiots think they own the streets, and want to be treated as rock stars. But it is these pea brained lowlife politicians who have brought down the Philippine economy. I can also blame the filipino people for putting these stupid bastards into office, and for treating them like gods. From where I live now, the ministers of parliament are just ordinary people whom you would meet at the local deli, whom you can chat about the weather, etc. They dont have overzealous bodyguards and they have cars which can also be afforded by ordinary people.

magkaisa tayong lahat at magtulungan, kaya naman natin kung talagang magkaka-isa tayo at hindi natin paiiralin ang indifference at “i don’t care/ i’ve given up hope” attitude.

PATAWARIN…

Dear Mr. Lim,
We deserve all this corruption because we allow these abuses to go on. Politicos buy our votes hence, they have this perception that they now own us. We deserve the kind of government we have. Iboto sila muli then we have no more right to complain.
Chipper Santos, Iloilo City
Dear Mr. Lim et al,
We deserve all this corruption because we allow it to happen. The politicos buy our votes hence, they have this notion that they own us. We sell our votes willingly hence, we do not any right to complain anymore.
Ricardo Lim
Chipper,
I’m afraid na tama ka. Politicians reflect our behavior. So we can’t expect them to improve until we change.
Still, you and I and many others obey the law, and try to be fair to our kapwa Pinoy, no matter what class. it is frustrating to see politicans behave this way despite the many good Filipinos.

We shouldn’t let this abuse pass. Di dapat palampasin. To the De la Paz’es: Be strong. A lot of people support you

GMA should ask him to resign, and for his mayor son. 2010 is just around the corner and sana matauhan na ang mga nasasakupan niya na huwag nang botohin and arroganteng warlord na yan!

Chipper,
You should speak for yourself. I do not sell my votes. I do not think Mr. Lim sold his votes. That is the reason why he is complaining. It may be fruitless because majority do sell their votes, but i do not want to be counted as one who is selling o who has sold my votes.

Sir’ it is not definitely our fault if our government officials are behaving that way.
Remember, citizen’s right to air their grivances were curtailed by the “no permit no rally”.
Remember, Bayan Muna Members were subjected to harassment, involuntary disappearance, and murder; for their conviction that our government is corrupt, and needs to be change.
Remember, that four witness (teachers) never made it to the Senate hearing because one of them was shoot dead in Maquindanao, and the other three teachers were kidnap in their sojourn in Cebu and has never been found again.
Remember, the basic tenet of Democracy is “by the people, with the people, and for the people,” does not holds true anymore. Our present politicians are nothing but Oligarch. (Rich and affluent people who does not have to work for a living because they are super-rich.) They are not true representative of the people.
Remember that the likes of Edcel Lagman, who double cross his party-list eventually was kick-out of his party because of his over zealous loyalty to PGMA. He abandoned the very essence of the party-luist doctrine, which is to represent the poor, and to uphold the highest moral value.
Our government is like a horse that has gone wild, IT DOES NOT KNOW THE REASON for ITS EXISTENCE. It metamorphize into a monster that is fond of lying squandering peoples money, compromised our country to China, it cheat, it steal, it kills, and it want perpetual power.

No visible bodyguards… because they are secret service.
First thing first, before Obama buys an ice cream, the place is already secured.
Besides, don’t compare, comparison is no good. One may look good and one may look bad.
politicians have the power to make laws, while we are not.
It is not the politicians. It is us. Masyado tayong palahanga.

The Church people should pay taxes just like everyone else.
2009 is a crucial year wherein our economy, stability, and survival will be tested.
It is this year when 11 million Filipinos was predicted to lose their job.
This is why no one should be exempted in paying taxes.
How can U.S.T., Ateneo, and San Beda justify charging exorbitant tuition fees, yet does not pay taxes.
If they sent their income to the Baticanm then, let us tax the Batican.
God says “Pity the poor.” Then so be it. Let the church organizations pay taxes to help the poor.
We are in the 21st Century and there is no more ‘HOLY COWS’ now-a-days except PGMA.
Pay your tax (church people) just like everyone else.

Religion and Politics works together in the Administration of PGMA.
The religious people take the bribe (donation) in exchange for non-participation on airing protest against government abuses.
Meanwhile our government squanders, misappropriate, and steals the peoples money.
Religious activity has a bloody past. When Christopher Columbus discovered America (South America), at first he refuses to convert the natives into Christians because he intends to enslave them. (It was prohibited to enslave Christians by another Christian.)
As a result, millions and millions of Native Americans died in the hands of their conquestadores. They were enslave they were maim, and many were raped. These natives were used to labor on large plantations, but because they have no natural immunity against the “old world’s disease,” their race was almost annihilated. Afterwards because there were just but few American Indians left, Christoper Columbus decides to import Negros from Africa to work in the fields. This is the reason why many Negros are in South America.
Funny, but we Filipinos really have the penchant of idolizing foreign people. Instead of Idolizing our own Dr. Jose Rizal, a world renowned genius, a multilingual, a multi-professional, a hero who never hesitate to sacrifice his life for his countrymen; instead, some crazy organization prefers to idolize a tyrant and a murderer who committed genocide; their idol by the name of Christoper Columbus.
In addition, those religious monks who accompanied Christoper Columbus are as guilty as the Columbus for the atrocities he committed.
Same with Ferdinant Magellan, we could have been progressive like the Vietnamis if he did not discover us.
Communist Vietnam got 70 billion dollars worth of investment last year without their president travellling abroad advertizing their country; while we got zero investment because we have a corrupt government.
PGMA does not have to travel abroad advertizing her country being a good site for investment because the whole world knows how corrupt her administration is. On top of that, the crime against humanity is so prevalent.
When PGMA grab the AIRPORT TERMINAL 3 from the German and Japanese investors, that alone has done irreperable damage which will take years and years to heal, if at all. “Mga suapang daw ang gobyerno natin, sabi ng foreign investors.”
So, what is the purpose of travelling abroad when we are already branded as most corrupt in Asia, and 2nd corrupt in the world.

a gruesome story and very unfortunate fate for the dela paz clan.
but what i can not understand is the lack of investigative journalism interest-from the pdi et al- on the incident that every pinoy/pinay on the island is huffing about. is there any picture taken by the attending physician or by the next of kin of the de la paz showing the cuts and bruises that can be ferreted out for the cyberspace users to see? there is a saying that a picture means a thousand words. is there any (anonymous maybe)witness out there that can gave more credible and verifiable account of the incident?
the he said this and he said that account from both side of the parties involve will shade no light to the incident for all of us to agree upon. we want proof.
if there is any hard evidence out there that we all can share and scrutinize, then let it be known in the cyberspace. let the whole world sees it.
my point, there is no just justice in our land. justice is not only blind in the phil. but also deaf and mute. an absolute waste and useless branch of phil.govt. juan dela cruz would have a better chance of fair court trial in foreign land than his own.
de lapaz needs the help of the cyberspace to get his day in court. or else, every thing is irrelevant. we knew that. we all knew that..

To think that as secretary and a mayor of a town, they can have all this privilege. No wonder people are branding (not to mention blogging) them as filthy politicos, hypocritos. If it was me, I’d resign right away, di na maghihingi ng paumanhin at i-finger pa sa iba na sila’y may kasalanan. Nakakahiya!
And look who’s talking? They blame on the bloggers the insensitivity of trying to make the issue look bigger. What a shame! Some politicians never get it!
And they think citizens today are still unintelligible as yesterday. tsk tsk.

i am wondering why our government allows incompetent officials to hold key positions in the government…
…yup, we have department secretaries, undersecretaries and etc,but i dont know if all of them truly know the nature of their function,,,or if they are morally fit to hold such delicate positions…nakakasuka….so stupid to think about that,,,,kaya nga lagi na lang palpak…abusado pa,,,kala mo naman cinong matalino,,,hangin pala laman nang ulo!

Our government is a democracy.
